Know This Transmission Before You Buy

The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this transmission family:

A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right transmission shows up:

  • Locate the QR code certification label on the driver's door B-pillar or glovebox RPO sticker to confirm RPO code MQB.
  • Confirm the truck is equipped with either the 5.3L V8 (L84) or 6.2L V8 (L87) gas engine.
  • Ensure the truck is a 4x4 (Four-Wheel Drive) model.
🔎 Where to look: Look at the right side of your current transmission case for a barcode sticker/metal tag. Note down the part number and the 4-digit alpha code (such as 9BJJ, 0BKJ, or 9BHJ) to cross-reference.

What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:

6.0 - 10.0shop labor900 - 1800typical shop bill, on top of the partAdvanced / ExpertDIY difficulty

Special tools this job needs:

  • Transmission jack
  • Heavy-duty jack stands
  • Engine support fixture
  • GM-compatible scan tool / J2534 pass-through device
  • Digital torque wrench
  • Fluid transfer pump
🔌 Wiring harness: The T93 TCM is located externally in the driver's side front wheel well/fender cavity. Inspect the connector pins carefully for road salt, water, and corrosion, and apply dielectric grease during reassembly.

Budget for these consumables at install:

  • Dexron ULV (Ultra Low Viscosity) Automatic Transmission Fluid ONLY
  • New transmission filter (ACDelco TF937 or equivalent)
  • New pan gasket
  • New front pump/torque converter input shaft seal
  • One-time-use transmission filter stretch bolts
  • Cooler line flush solvent/machine

What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:

⚠️ Requiredprogramming / calibration⚠️ Yesdealer tool needed⚠️ YesECU/PCM re-marriage

What’s involved: TUN/PUN Calibration & Service Fast Learn

The 10L80 requires the TCM to be programmed with the specific valve body characterization data (TUN/PUN) of the replacement unit using a GM dealer-level scan tool (such as GM SPS2 / Techline Connect with a J2534 pass-through device). After programming, a Fast Service Relearn (adaptive relearn) must be executed to teach the TCM clutch apply volumes.

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

  • Torque Converter Seating: Ensure the torque converter is fully seated onto the input shaft and pump gears (three distinct clicks/clunks). If not fully seated, tightening the bellhousing bolts will shatter the transmission pump gear.
  • Exhaust Pipe Clearance: The exhaust crossover pipe runs directly under the transmission pan. Loosen the exhaust flange or use a ratchet strap to pull the exhaust pipe down slightly to gain clearance and avoid damaging the valve body.
  • No Dipstick / Bottom Fill: Fluid must be pumped in from underneath, and the level must be checked via the side check-plug while the transmission is running at the exact GM-specified temperature (167°F - 176°F).
  • Thermal Bypass Valve (TBV): The TBV is located inside the valve body on gas-powered trucks. If the old transmission overheated or failed, the cooler and bypass valve must be thoroughly hot-flushed or replaced to prevent debris from contaminating the new unit.

Easy to get right once you know them:

  • Using the Wrong Fluid: Filling the transmission with Dexron VI or standard synthetic ATF instead of Dexron ULV, which causes immediate clutch chatter, slipping, and complete failure.
  • Skipping the TUN/PUN Programming and Relearn: Driving the vehicle immediately without programming the new TUN code and performing the Service Fast Learn, resulting in immediate harsh shifting and clutch damage.
  • Failing to Flush the Cooler Lines: Reusing a contaminated cooler and lines, which washes metal debris from the previous failure directly into the new valve body.
  • Improper Fluid Level: Underfilling or overfilling due to checking the fluid level without following the exact temperature-based side check-plug procedure.
  • Forcing the Bellhousing Bolts: Using the bolts to pull the transmission and engine together when the torque converter is not fully seated, breaking the pump.

Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every transmission of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:

severeTransmission control valve (Feed Limit Low Valve) premature wear causing loss of hydraulic pressure, harsh shifting, and potential rear-wheel lock-up.2019-2020

🔎 Recommended at install: TCM software update to monitor valve wear and limit transmission to 5th gear if failure is detected, plus physical valve body repair/replacement.

severeTorque converter clutch (TCC) degradation causing a shuddering sensation ('driving over rumble strips') and shedding metal shavings.2019-2020

🔎 Recommended at install: Replace torque converter and flush system to prevent pump and valve body damage.

moderateAccumulator / Dampener Wear leading to harsh shifting, delayed engagement, and slipping.2019-2020

🔎 Recommended at install: Replace worn accumulators in the valve body.

moderateTransition to Gen-3 service valve body to address robustness and debris tolerance issues.2019-2020

🔎 Recommended at install: Eliminate auxiliary valve body and consolidate into main assembly.

moderateHarsh or jerky engagement when engine restarts after Auto Stop/Start event.2019-2020

🔎 Recommended at install: Update TCM calibration.

moderateTransmission whine, growl, or grind noise at idle increasing with engine RPM.2019-2020

🔎 Recommended at install: Update drive and idler gears to corrected 2022 design.

moderateTransmission overheating / DTC P27EC.2019-2020

🔎 Recommended at install: Correct twisted cooler line or replace failing internal Thermal Bypass Valve (TBV).

Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 400-10699-5594326). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.

Policies, in plain English.

Shipping & Handling

  • Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
  • Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
  • The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
  • Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance

120-Day Warranty

This part includes a 120-day warranty.

  • If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
  • Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
  • Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation

Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.

Returns (30 Days)

We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.

  • Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
  • Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
  • Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
  • Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
  • Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited

Damaged in Shipping?

Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:

  • Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
  • Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
  • Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
  • Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery

We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.

Order Cancellation

Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
