Know This Transmission Before You Buy

The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this transmission family:

A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right transmission shows up:

  • Verify the 5th digit of the VIN is W or Y and the engine is a 5.3L V8.
  • Check the Service Parts Identification label in the glovebox or door jamb for RPO code MYC.
  • Confirm the vehicle is a 4x4 model with a front driveshaft and transfer case.
🔎 Where to look: Look for the barcode sticker on the passenger side of the main case for a 4-character code (e.g., 9CKA) and the laser-etched partial VIN on the top-driver's side of the bellhousing flange.

What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:

5 to 10 hoursshop labor750 to 1,800typical shop bill, on top of the partAdvanced / ExpertDIY difficulty

Special tools this job needs:

  • Heavy-duty transmission jack
  • Torque converter holding/alignment tool
  • J2534 pass-thru programming device (GM MDI2 or equivalent)
  • Professional scan tool capable of performing a Transmission Fast Learn
  • Fluid pump for refilling
🔌 Wiring harness: Internal TEHCM is VIN-locked and must be reprogrammed to match the vehicle's VIN. External wiring harness pig-tails and brackets are not included.

Budget for these consumables at install:

  • GM-approved Dexron VI automatic transmission fluid (or Mobil 1 Synthetic LV ATF HP per TSB 18-NA-355)
  • Transmission filter and pan gasket
  • Torque converter input seal (front pump seal)
  • Updated GM low-temperature thermal bypass valve (Part #85585333)
  • Professional transmission cooler line flush solvent / hot flush
  • Transfer case input and output seals

What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:

⚠️ Requiredprogramming / calibration⚠️ Yesdealer tool needed⚠️ YesECU/PCM re-marriage

What’s involved: VIN-Specific Programming & TCM Adaptive Relearn (Fast Learn)

The internal TEHCM is VIN-locked. A technician must use a J2534 pass-thru device with GM's SPS2 / Techline Connect software to overwrite the donor VIN with the target vehicle's VIN. A Transmission Fast Learn adaptive reset must then be performed to calibrate the solenoids.

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

  • Torque Converter Seating: Must click and drop down three distinct times to fully engage the pump gears. Failure to seat fully will crack the front pump gear upon bolting to the engine.
  • Bypassing the Thermostat for Flushing: The thermal bypass valve blocks fluid flow to the cooler when cold. You must temporarily remove or bypass the thermostat during flushing to clear out debris.
  • Fluid Level Check Procedure: No dipstick is present. Fluid level must be checked via the bottom pan plug with the engine running and fluid temperature strictly between 86°F and 122°F (30°C to 50°C).

Easy to get right once you know them:

  • Skipping the VIN Programming: Assuming the unit is plug-and-play, resulting in a no-start security condition or single-gear limp mode.
  • Reusing the Old Torque Converter: Reintroducing trapped metal debris from the failed transmission into the replacement unit.
  • Failing to Flush the Cooler Lines: Allowing old debris to contaminate the replacement unit's sensitive solenoids and pressure switches.
  • Forcing the Bellhousing Bolts: Using bolts to pull the transmission flush to the engine when the torque converter is not fully seated, cracking the pump.
  • Ignoring the Thermal Bypass Valve Upgrade: Reusing the original 194°F thermostat, leading to fluid degradation and premature failure.
  • Buying the Wrong Drivetrain Version: Ordering a 4WD transmission for a 2WD truck or vice-versa.

Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every transmission of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:

severeTorque Converter Clutch (TCC) Shudder & Failure2019-2022

🔎 Recommended at install: Flush transmission with specific fluid exchange machine and refill with Mobil 1 Synthetic LV ATF HP fluid (TSB 18-NA-355). If severe, replace the torque converter and flush the entire cooling system.

severeTransmission Overheating / Thermal Bypass Valve Failure2019-2022

🔎 Recommended at install: Install updated GM low-temperature thermal bypass valve (Part #85585333) which opens at 158°F (70°C) instead of the original 194°F.

moderateTEHCM Pressure Switch Failures / Harsh Shifting2019-2022

🔎 Recommended at install: Replace internal pressure switch membranes or complete TEHCM assembly. Diagnosed via DTCs P0877, P2715, P0796, or P0777.

Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 400-10697-5581317). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.

Policies, in plain English.

Shipping & Handling

  • Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
  • Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
  • The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
  • Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance

120-Day Warranty

This part includes a 120-day warranty.

  • If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
  • Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
  • Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation

Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.

Returns (30 Days)

We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.

  • Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
  • Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
  • Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
  • Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
  • Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited

Damaged in Shipping?

Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:

  • Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
  • Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
  • Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
  • Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery

We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.

Order Cancellation

Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
