Know This Transmission Before You Buy

The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this transmission family:

A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right transmission shows up:

  • Check VIN 8th digit: Must be 'G' to confirm 3.5L EcoBoost V6 engine.
  • Check driver's door pillar sticker: Under 'TR' column, verify the transmission code matches the expected unit.
  • Verify transmission tag: Locate the white sticker on the left side of the transmission case to check the part number and strategy codes.
  • Drivetrain Confirmation: Ensure the vehicle is Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD).
🔎 Where to look: Look for the white identification tag on the left (driver) side of the transmission case containing the part number, Solenoid Body ID, and Solenoid Body Strategy.

What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:

8 to 12 hoursshop labor1000 to 2200typical shop bill, on top of the partAdvanced to ExpertDIY difficulty

Special tools this job needs:

  • Heavy-duty transmission jack
  • Engine support bar or screw jack
  • Fluid transfer pump
  • Professional scan tool (Ford IDS / FDRS or FORScan with OBDII adapter)
  • Transmission line disconnect tool (Ford 307-569)
🔌 Wiring harness: External sensors and wiring harness beyond the integrated lead frame are not included and must be transferred from the old unit.

Budget for these consumables at install:

  • Transmission Fluid (sources differ: Motorcraft Mercon LV vs Mercon ULV — confirm with us before install)
  • Transmission Filter (Motorcraft FT-188 or equivalent)
  • Transmission Pan Gasket
  • Front Torque Converter Seal (Part # 6L2Z-7052-CA or equivalent)
  • Rear Extension Housing Seal
  • Transmission Cooler Flush Solvent

What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:

⚠️ Requiredprogramming / calibration⚠️ Yesdealer tool needed⚠️ YesECU/PCM re-marriage

What’s involved: Solenoid Body Strategy & ID Programming and Adaptive Relearn

You must use a dealer-level scan tool (Ford IDS/FDRS) or FORScan to write the new 13-digit Solenoid Body Strategy and 12-digit Solenoid ID from the replacement transmission case tag into the vehicle's PCM/TCM. After programming, clear Keep Alive Memory (KAM) and perform the Transmission Adaptive Learning Drive Cycle.

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

  • Torque Converter Seating: Must click/drop three distinct times. Forcing the transmission flush against the engine block with bolts if not seated will crack the front pump gear.
  • Torque Converter Nuts: Hand-snug first, then torque to spec in a star pattern. Do not use an impact gun one by one.
  • Engine Slumping: Place a support stand under the front of the engine to keep it level when the transmission is removed.
  • Subframe Realignment: Mark alignment marks before dropping the front subframe to avoid needing a professional front-end alignment.
  • Fluid Level Check Procedure: No engine bay dipstick. Must check using the short dipstick on the side of the case while the engine is running and fluid is hot (190°F-215°F depending on model).
  • Bellhousing Dowel Pins: Ensure alignment dowels are present and clean to prevent pump or converter damage.

Easy to get right once you know them:

  • Skipping Solenoid Strategy Programming: Driving without programming the new strategy causes harsh shifting, flares, and rapid clutch destruction.
  • Using the Wrong Fluid: Mixing up Mercon LV and Mercon ULV. The transmission is highly sensitive to the exact fluid specification.
  • Forcing the Bellhousing Bolts: Using bolts to draw the engine and transmission together when the torque converter is not fully seated.
  • Failing to Flush the Cooler: Reusing the old cooler without a hot flush, which washes debris from the failed unit into the new transmission.

Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every transmission of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:

Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 400-10504-4956344). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.

Policies, in plain English.

Shipping & Handling

  • Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
  • Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
  • The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
  • Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance

120-Day Warranty

This part includes a 120-day warranty.

  • If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
  • Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
  • Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation

Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.

Returns (30 Days)

We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.

  • Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
  • Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
  • Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
  • Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
  • Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited

Damaged in Shipping?

Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:

  • Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
  • Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
  • Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
  • Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery

We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.

Order Cancellation

Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
