Know This Transmission Before You Buy

The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this transmission family:

A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right transmission shows up:

  • Confirm the 8th digit of your VIN is 9 (verifying the 2.0L EcoBoost engine).
  • Confirm your vehicle is an AWD (4x4) model with a rear driveshaft and a Power Transfer Unit (PTU) bolted to the passenger side of the transmission.
  • Locate the transmission identification tag on the top of your current transmission case and confirm it matches the interchange numbers.
🔎 Where to look: Look for the transmission part number tag (such as GV6P-EA or GV6Z-D) on the top of the transmission case.

What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:

Special tools this job needs:

  • Transverse engine support bar
  • Transmission jack
  • Torque wrench
  • Subframe alignment pins
  • Fluid transfer pump/funnel for side-fill port
  • OBD2 scan tool compatible with FORScan or dealer-level software (J2534 pass-through or OBDLink EX adapter)
🔌 Wiring harness: The 6F35 does not have an internal TCM that requires VIN-flashing, but the external wiring harness and internal lead frame must match. Solenoid strategy programming is required.

Budget for these consumables at install:

  • Motorcraft MERCON LV ATF (approx. 9.0 quarts total dry capacity, buy 10 quarts for temperature-based leveling procedure)
  • Torque converter seal (front pump seal)
  • Left and right axle shaft seals
  • PTU compression seal (Ford part # CV6Z-7086-B)
  • PTU fluid (approx. 12 fl oz of SAE 75W-140 synthetic gear lubricant)
  • Transmission cooler line flush aerosol can or machine

What’s involved: Solenoid Body Strategy Programming and Transmission Adaptive Relearn

You must program the unique 13-digit Solenoid Body Strategy and 7-digit Solenoid Body ID stamped on the transmission case tag into your vehicle's PCM/TCM using FORScan or a dealer-level scan tool. Additionally, you must clear the transmission adaptive tables and perform an adaptive relearn drive cycle.

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

  • Torque Converter Seating: Ensure the torque converter is fully seated onto the input shaft and pump gears before bolting to the engine. If not fully seated, tightening the bellhousing bolts will crack the transmission fluid pump.
  • Engine Alignment Dowels: Check that both engine-to-transmission alignment dowels are present on the engine block to prevent rapid flexplate failure and crankshaft pilot wear.
  • Solenoid Strategy Sticker: Take a clear photo of the 13-digit Solenoid Strategy sticker on the top of the bellhousing before installation, as it is extremely difficult to see once installed.
  • Fluid Level Check Procedure: The 6F35 does not have a dipstick. You must check the fluid level via the side leveling plug only when the transmission fluid temperature is between 185°F and 200°F (85°C to 93°C) with the engine running and vehicle level.
  • PTU Transfer & Sealing: Inspect the PTU splines for wear, grease them appropriately, and replace the compression seal between the transmission and the PTU to prevent fluid leaks.

Easy to get right once you know them:

  • Skipping the Solenoid Strategy Programming: Driving the vehicle without programming the 13-digit strategy code results in immediate shift flares, harsh slamming, and rapid clutch wear.
  • Trying to Change the Filter: The 6F35 filter is internal and requires splitting the case halves to replace. Do not attempt to drop a pan or pry off the side valve-body cover to change it.
  • Failing to Flush the Cooler Lines: Debris and metal shavings from the failed transmission trapped in the cooler lines will wash into the replacement unit and destroy the valve body.
  • Incorrect Fluid Level Check: Checking the fluid level cold or at the wrong temperature leads to severe under- or over-filling, causing foaming, slipping, and eventual failure.

Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every transmission of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:

severeNHTSA Recall 22V413000 (Ford Recall 22S43) — Shifter Cable Bushing2013–2019

🔎 Recommended at install: Inspect shift cable bushing and replace with the updated Ford part and protective cap while accessible.

severeCustomer Satisfaction Program 22N12 — Flexplate Cracks2017-2019 (2.0L EcoBoost with 6F35)

🔎 Recommended at install: Always inspect your flexplate for cracks before bolting up the replacement transmission to prevent damage to the fluid pump and torque converter.

moderateTSB 16-0043 — Left-Hand Halfshaft Seal Fluid Leak2017-2019

🔎 Recommended at install: Replace the left-hand transmission halfshaft seal and inspect the transmission case bushing for premature wear.

moderateShift Flares and Harsh Shifts (1-2 or 2-3 shift flare)2017-2019

🔎 Recommended at install: Typically caused by sticking valves, worn solenoid dampers, or failure to reset TCM adaptive learning tables. Ensure proper fluid maintenance and perform TCM adaptive relearn.

severeTorque Converter Shudder & Metal Contamination2017-2019

🔎 Recommended at install: The torque converter clutch degrades over time, sending metal debris through the unit. A mandatory flush of the transmission cooler lines is required.

Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 400-10077-5596231). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.

Policies, in plain English.

Shipping & Handling

  • Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
  • Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
  • The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
  • Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance

120-Day Warranty

This part includes a 120-day warranty.

  • If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
  • Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
  • Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation

Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.

Returns (30 Days)

We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.

  • Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
  • Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
  • Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
  • Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
  • Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited

Damaged in Shipping?

Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:

  • Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
  • Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
  • Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
  • Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery

We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.

Order Cancellation

Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
