Know This Transmission Before You Buy

The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this transmission family:

A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right transmission shows up:

  • Verify VIN to confirm vehicle is a 2016 or 2017 Ford Transit 150, 250, or 350.
  • Confirm engine is the 3.5L Twin-Turbo EcoBoost V6 (not the 3.7L NA V6 or 3.2L Diesel).
  • Check the Safety Compliance Certification Label on the driver's door jamb to confirm the production date is on or before June 14, 2017.
  • Locate the transmission tag on the driver's side of the case to verify it is a 6R80 unit.
🔎 Where to look: Look for the metal identification tag affixed to the driver's (left) side of the transmission case, just behind the bellhousing, containing the 13-digit Solenoid Body Strategy and 12-digit Solenoid Body ID.

What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:

5.0 to 8.0shop labor750 to 1500typical shop bill, on top of the partExpertDIY difficulty

Special tools this job needs:

  • heavy-duty transmission jack
  • under-car fluid transfer pump
  • professional-grade diagnostic scan tool (Ford IDS, FDRS, or FORScan with approved OBD-II adapter)
  • torque wrench
  • socket and wrench sets
🔌 Wiring harness: Wiring harness connections and internal calibrations vary significantly by model and year range. Ensure the donor vehicle matches the target vehicle's build specifications.

Budget for these consumables at install:

  • Motorcraft MERCON LV (Low Viscosity) ATF (Part # XT-10-QLVC)
  • Motorcraft transmission filter (Part # BL3Z-7A098-A / FT188) and pan gasket
  • Torque converter seal (front pump/input shaft seal)
  • Driveshaft seals
  • Transmission cooler line flush solvent

What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:

What’s involved: Solenoid Strategy Programming & Adaptive Relearn

The 13-digit Solenoid Body Strategy code and 12-digit Solenoid Body ID from the replacement transmission's tag must be programmed into the vehicle's PCM using a compatible scan tool (Ford IDS, FDRS, or FORScan). Do not drive the vehicle with the old strategy programmed. After programming, clear the Keep-Alive Memory (KAM) / adaptive tables and perform the standard Ford adaptive drive cycle.

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

  • Torque Converter Seating: Ensure the torque converter is fully seated onto the input shaft and front pump gears (three distinct clicks/drops) before bolting to the engine to avoid cracking the internal pump gears.
  • No-Underhood-Dipstick Fill: The Transit has no dipstick under the hood. Fluid must be pumped from underneath into a 19mm fill plug on the passenger side of the case.
  • Fluid Level Check Temperature: Fluid level must be checked with the engine idling in Park, vehicle level, and fluid temperature between 175°F and 185°F (80°C to 85°C). Wear heat-resistant gloves to avoid burns from the adjacent catalytic converter.
  • Alignment Dowel Pins: Ensure both alignment dowel pins are present in the engine block to prevent rapid wear on the torque converter pilot hub, front pump seal, and flexplate.
  • Cooler Line Flush: Thoroughly flush the transmission cooler lines and auxiliary cooler to prevent trapped debris from contaminating the new transmission.

Easy to get right once you know them:

  • Skipping the Solenoid Strategy Flash: Attempting to run the transmission without programming the new 13-digit strategy code into the PCM, leading to harsh shifting and immediate clutch damage.
  • Checking Fluid with the Engine Off: Checking the dipstick with the engine off, which results in a reading that is 3 to 4 quarts low.
  • Using the Wrong Fluid: Using older Mercon V, newer Mercon ULV, or generic multi-vehicle fluids instead of the strictly required Motorcraft MERCON LV.
  • Reusing a Contaminated Cooler: Failing to flush the cooler lines after a mechanical failure, washing old debris directly into the replacement unit.

Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every transmission of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:

severeMolded Leadframe / Speed Sensor Failure (TSB 16-0008 / TSB 24-2046)6R80 family

🔎 Recommended at install: Inspect leadframe connector pins for cleanliness. Ensure vehicle's PCM is updated with the latest Ford software calibration to prevent sudden downshifts.

severeDriveshaft Flexible Coupling 'Flex Disc' Failure (NHTSA Recall 17S15 / Campaign 17V414000 / Superseded by 19V767000)2015-2017 Ford Transit

🔎 Recommended at install: Inspect rubber coupling during swap. Replace with redesigned Ford service part or a driveshaft section equipped with a mechanical universal joint (U-joint).

moderateIntermittent Loss of Reverse Engagement (TSB 20-2060)2015-2017 Ford Transit

🔎 Recommended at install: Reprogram the PCM to the latest calibration level.

🔎 Recommended at install: Update powertrain control software.

Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 400-05269-5569717). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.

Policies, in plain English.

Shipping & Handling

  • Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
  • Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
  • The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
  • Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance

120-Day Warranty

This part includes a 120-day warranty.

  • If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
  • Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
  • Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation

Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.

Returns (30 Days)

We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.

  • Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
  • Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
  • Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
  • Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
  • Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited

Damaged in Shipping?

Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:

  • Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
  • Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
  • Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
  • Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery

We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.

Order Cancellation

Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
