Know This Transmission Before You Buy

The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this transmission family:

A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right transmission shows up:

  • Verify the 8th digit of your VIN is D (indicates 3.6L V6 engine).
  • Verify your Service Parts Identification sticker has RPO code M7V or MY9 (FWD 6T75). If you see M7X, your vehicle is AWD.
  • Look under the vehicle to confirm it is Front-Wheel Drive (no transfer case or rear driveshaft).
🔎 Where to look: Locate the barcode tag on the side pan rail of the transmission case and verify the 4-digit alphanumeric code.

What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:

8.0 to 12.0 hoursshop labor$1,000 to $2,000+typical shop bill, on top of the partAdvanced / ExpertDIY difficulty

Special tools this job needs:

  • Engine support fixture
  • Subframe/transmission jack
  • J2534 pass-thru programming device or GM-specific scan tool (GM MDI/MDI2)
  • GM special tool DT-45096 for flushing cooler lines
🔌 Wiring harness: The electrical connector on the front cover is fragile. Keep the protective shipping cover on the connector until the transmission is fully bolted in place.

Budget for these consumables at install:

  • DEXRON-VI synthetic automatic transmission fluid
  • Control Valve Body Cover Gasket and connector seal (if swapping TEHCM)
  • Front pump/torque converter seal
  • Axle seals
  • Professional-grade transmission cooler line flush or replacement plate-style cooler

What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:

⚠️ Requiredprogramming / calibration⚠️ Yesdealer tool needed⚠️ YesECU/PCM re-marriage

What’s involved: VIN-specific dealer programming (using GM SPS2 software) AND a TCM Adaptive Relearn ('Fast Learn')

The internal TEHCM is locked to the donor vehicle's VIN. It must be reprogrammed using GM SPS2, or your original functioning TEHCM/valve body assembly must be swapped into the replacement unit. A TCM Adaptive Relearn ('Fast Learn') is mandatory in either case to calibrate the solenoids.

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

  • Torque Converter Seating: The torque converter must be fully seated onto the input shaft and front pump (rotating and pushing until it drops/clicks three distinct times) before bolting to the engine. Forcing the bellhousing bolts will crack the pump rotor and destroy the transmission.
  • Do Not Drop the Pan for the Filter: The main transmission fluid filter is internal and non-serviceable without completely splitting the transmission case.
  • Fluid Level Checking Temperature: Fluid level must be checked with the engine idling, vehicle on level ground, and transmission fluid temperature strictly between 180°F and 200°F (82°C and 93°C).
  • Cooler Line Contamination: You must flush the cooler lines or replace the plate-style cooler entirely to prevent debris from the failed transmission from destroying the replacement unit.

Easy to get right once you know them:

  • Ordering the Wrong Drivetrain (AWD vs. FWD): Buying a FWD transmission for an AWD vehicle. The AWD version has a completely different case casting to accommodate the transfer case.
  • Expecting Plug-and-Play Operation: Assuming the transmission will work without reprogramming the internal TEHCM or swapping the original TEHCM.
  • Skipping the Cooler Line Flush: Failing to flush or replace the cooler, which leads to immediate failure from trapped metal debris.
  • Forcing the Bellhousing Bolts: Using bolts to pull the engine and transmission together when the torque converter is not fully seated.

Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every transmission of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:

moderateTransmission shudder, harsh 2-3 upshift, or harsh 3-2 downshift concern2014-2017

🔎 Recommended at install: Reprogramming the TCM with updated software or replacing the torque converter if physical damage has occurred

minorHarsh 1-2 shift under light throttle with no DTCs stored2015-2017

🔎 Recommended at install: Reprogramming the TCM with the latest software calibrations

moderateTorque converter clutch solenoid sticking due to debris, causing engine stall when coming to a stop2014-2017

🔎 Recommended at install: Replace the control solenoid valve assembly and reprogram the TCM

severeFractured 3-5-Reverse clutch wave plate causing catastrophic internal damage and loss of 3rd, 5th, and Reverse gearsPrimarily 2007-2009 (Gen 1)

🔎 Recommended at install: This 2017 Gen 2 unit features a redesigned, thicker, and stress-relieved wave plate from the factory, making failure highly unlikely.

moderateFaulty internal TCM pressure switches leading to diagnostic trouble codes and erratic shifting2014-2017

🔎 Recommended at install: Replace or service the internal TEHCM/pressure switches

Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 400-05074-5585417). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.

Policies, in plain English.

Shipping & Handling

  • Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
  • Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
  • The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
  • Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance

120-Day Warranty

This part includes a 120-day warranty.

  • If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
  • Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
  • Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation

Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.

Returns (30 Days)

We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.

  • Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
  • Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
  • Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
  • Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
  • Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited

Damaged in Shipping?

Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:

  • Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
  • Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
  • Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
  • Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery

We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.

Order Cancellation

Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
