Know This Transmission Before You Buy

The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this transmission family:

A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right transmission shows up:

  • Verify the transmission identification tag on top of the current case matches DA5P-7000-EB.
  • Confirm the vehicle is All-Wheel Drive (AWD) by checking for a rear driveshaft and PTU.
  • Confirm the engine is a 3.5L naturally aspirated or 3.7L V6 (not a 3.5L EcoBoost twin-turbo or 4-cylinder).
  • Verify the axle ratio is 3.65 (check the Axle code on the driver's door jamb sticker).
  • Check the driver's door jamb sticker under 'TR' to confirm the code is 'C' (designating the 6F55).
🔎 Where to look: The primary metal identification tag is located on top of the main transmission case, typically near the shift linkage and bellhousing area.

What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:

7.0 - 13.0shop labor1050 - 2200typical shop bill, on top of the partAdvanced / ExpertDIY difficulty

Special tools this job needs:

  • Engine support bar
  • Transmission jack
  • Subframe alignment pins
  • Professional diagnostic scan tool (Ford IDS or FORScan with OBDLink EX cable)
🔌 Wiring harness: The 6F55 does not use a standalone TCM; electronic functions are controlled directly by the engine's PCM. Wiring harness must match the AWD configuration.

Budget for these consumables at install:

  • Motorcraft MERCON LV ATF (approx. 11.6 quarts for dry fill)
  • PTU Fluid: 75W-140 Gear Oil
  • Torque converter input seal
  • CV axle seals
  • PTU input/output seals
  • Solenoid filter plate (Part # 25016A) and side cover gasket (Part # 7T4Z-7F396-A) if opening side cover
  • Transmission cooler line flush (heated flush or replacement of cooler if previous unit had internal metal debris)

What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:

⚠️ Requiredprogramming / calibration✅ Nodealer tool needed⚠️ YesECU/PCM re-marriage

What’s involved: Solenoid Strategy Programming and TCM Adaptive Relearn

You must record the 13-digit Solenoid Body Strategy code and 7-digit Solenoid Body ID code from the tag on top of the transmission case before installation. These codes must be programmed into the vehicle's PCM using a compatible scan tool (such as Ford IDS or FORScan). Skipping this step will cause immediate harsh shifting, slipping, and permanent clutch damage.

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

  • Torque Converter Seating: Ensure the torque converter is fully seated onto the input shaft and front pump gears (must feel 3 distinct drops/clicks). Tightening bellhousing bolts with an unseated converter will shatter the transmission pump.
  • PTU Spline Alignment & Lubrication: Clean and apply high-temperature, water-resistant grease to the splines connecting the transmission to the PTU to prevent rust-welding.
  • Subframe Alignment: Use alignment pins when reinstalling the lowered front subframe to prevent throwing off steering geometry and wheel alignment.
  • Fluid Level Checking Procedure: There is no traditional under-hood dipstick. Check fluid level via the short dipstick/leveling plug on the side of the transmission case while the engine is running, the vehicle is level, and the fluid is at operating temperature (180°F - 200°F).

Easy to get right once you know them:

  • Skipping the Solenoid Strategy Update: Driving the vehicle without programming the 13-digit strategy code into the PCM, leading to immediate harsh shifting and clutch failure.
  • Reusing the Old Torque Converter: Reusing a contaminated converter which flushes metal shavings and debris into the replacement transmission.
  • Mixing up the 6F50 and 6F55: Accidentally ordering a lighter-duty 6F50 from a naturally aspirated 3.5L Explorer instead of the heavier-duty 6F55.
  • Using Bellhousing Bolts to Pull the Transmission In: Forcing the transmission and engine block together with bolts when the torque converter is not fully seated.
  • Reusing a Contaminated Cooler: Failing to properly flush or replace the transmission cooler after an internal mechanical failure.
  • Ignoring the PTU: Forgetting to replace PTU seals and fluid while the unit is out of the vehicle.

Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every transmission of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:

severeDirect Clutch Cylinder Snap Ring Failure (TSB SSM 50861)2015-2016 (built between November 2, 2015, and February 1, 2016)

🔎 Recommended at install: Requires internal mechanical repair of the direct clutch cylinder/tone wheel retaining snap ring. Often presents with DTCs P0715, P0717, P0756, and/or P2701.

severeShifter Cable Bushing Degradation (NHTSA Recall 22V-413 / Ford Recall 22S43)2015-2018

🔎 Recommended at install: Installation of an upgraded bushing and a protective cap to prevent rollaway hazard.

moderateSluggish Acceleration & Harsh Shift Bump (TSB 13-3-18)2011-2013

🔎 Recommended at install: Reprogram the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) to the latest calibration and reset the transmission's adaptive shift strategy.

moderateValve Body Wear & Solenoid Shift FlaresAll

🔎 Recommended at install: Replace or rebuild worn valve body components and solenoids.

severeTorque Converter Shudder / FailureAll

🔎 Recommended at install: Replace torque converter and perform a thorough system flush to clear metal debris from the internal filter and pump.

Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 400-05000-3363151). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.

Policies, in plain English.

Shipping & Handling

  • Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
  • Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
  • The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
  • Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance

120-Day Warranty

This part includes a 120-day warranty.

  • If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
  • Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
  • Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation

Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.

Returns (30 Days)

We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.

  • Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
  • Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
  • Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
  • Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
  • Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited

Damaged in Shipping?

Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:

  • Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
  • Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
  • Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
  • Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery

We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.

Order Cancellation

Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
