Know This Transmission Before You Buy

The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this transmission family:

A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right transmission shows up:

  • Verify the 8th digit of the VIN is 'C' (confirming the 3.5L V6 engine).
  • Verify the drivetrain is AWD (All-Wheel Drive).
  • Verify the transmission tag ID on top of the case matches BA8P-7000-GA, GB, GC, DA8P-7000-GA, or DA8P-7000-RA.
  • Verify the door sticker transmission code under 'TR' is 'J'.
🔎 Where to look: The primary identification tag is a sticker located on the top of the transaxle case.

What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:

8.0 to 11.0 hoursshop labor$1,000 to $1,800typical shop bill, on top of the partAdvanced / ExpertDIY difficulty

Special tools this job needs:

  • Engine support bar
  • Transmission jack
  • Subframe alignment pins
  • Torque wrench
  • Bi-directional scan tool (Ford IDS or FORScan with OBDLink adapter)
🔌 Wiring harness: The main 20-pin electrical connector plug on the transmission case is chipped. You may need to secure your vehicle's wiring harness plug with a heavy-duty zip tie, or swap your original solenoid body/lead frame assembly (which contains this connector) from your old transmission.

Budget for these consumables at install:

  • Motorcraft MERCON LV Automatic Transmission Fluid
  • Front pump/torque converter seal (Ford Part # 7T4Z-7A248-A or equivalent)
  • Left-hand and right-hand axle shaft seals
  • Transmission cooler-line hot flush fluid
  • Solenoid filter plate / main control cover gasket (if side pan is removed)

What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:

⚠️ Requiredprogramming / calibration⚠️ Yesdealer tool needed✅ NoECU/PCM re-marriage

What’s involved: Solenoid Body Strategy Programming and TCM Adaptive Relearn

If using the replacement solenoid body, you must program its 13-digit Solenoid Strategy and 7-digit Solenoid Body ID into the PCM. Alternatively, you can swap your original solenoid body/lead frame assembly into this unit to avoid reprogramming. Regardless of the option chosen, you must clear the transmission adaptive tables and perform an adaptive relearn drive cycle.

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

  • Torque Converter Seating: Ensure the torque converter is fully seated (typically three distinct clicks/drops) before bolting to the engine to avoid cracking the front pump.
  • TSS/OSS Sensors: Highly recommended to replace both sensors with brand-new OEM Ford parts while the transmission is on the bench.
  • PTU (Power Transfer Unit) Alignment: Inspect PTU splines, replace the PTU input shaft seal, and replace the PTU fluid (75W-140 synthetic gear oil).
  • Subframe Alignment: Mark the subframe alignment or use alignment pins during removal, and perform a 4-wheel alignment after installation is complete.
  • Cooler Flush: Must perform a heated, pressurized flush of the transmission cooler and lines to remove metal debris from the failed unit.

Easy to get right once you know them:

  • Mismatched Solenoid Strategy: Driving the vehicle without programming the new 13-digit solenoid strategy into the PCM.
  • Using the Wrong Fluid: Filling the transmission with Mercon V or generic multi-vehicle ATF instead of the required Mercon LV.
  • Not Replacing PTU Fluid / Damaging PTU Seals: Reinstalling the PTU without changing its fluid or damaging the PTU-to-transmission seal.
  • Forcing the Torque Converter: Forcing the transmission onto the engine when the torque converter is not fully seated, cracking the pump.
  • Ignoring the Chipped Plug: Failing to inspect or swap the chipped electrical connector/harness from the original transmission.
  • Ordering for a FWD Model: Ordering an AWD transmission for a Front-Wheel Drive (FWD) vehicle.

Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 400-01396-1902020). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.

Policies, in plain English.

Shipping & Handling

  • Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
  • Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
  • The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
  • Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance

120-Day Warranty

This part includes a 120-day warranty.

  • If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
  • Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
  • Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation

Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.

Returns (30 Days)

We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.

  • Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
  • Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
  • Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
  • Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
  • Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited

Damaged in Shipping?

Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:

  • Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
  • Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
  • Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
  • Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery

We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.

Order Cancellation

Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
