Know This Engine Before You Buy

The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this engine family:

A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right engine shows up:

  • Verify the 5th digit of your VIN is '1' on the dashboard or door jamb sticker.
  • Locate the engine code 'CYFB' on the white paper barcode label on the plastic timing chain cover or stamped on the flat machined pad on the left side of the engine block.
🔎 Where to look: Look for the engine code 'CYFB' on the timing cover sticker or stamped on the engine block mating surface.

What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:

12 to 20 hoursshop labor1800 to 4000typical shop bill, on top of the partExpertDIY difficulty

Special tools this job needs:

  • Triple Square (XZN) socket set
  • Torx socket set (T20 to T50)
  • Engine hoist and load leveler
  • VAG-specific coolant vacuum purge tool
  • VCDS (VAG-COM) or ODIS diagnostic scan tool
  • Teflon injector seal installer/compressor tool (T10133)
  • Camshaft locking tools
  • Crankshaft pulley removal/installation tools
🔌 Wiring harness: The engine harness should be transferred from the original engine to ensure full compatibility with the vehicle's electronics, unless the replacement harness is in verifiably better condition and an exact match.

Budget for these consumables at install:

  • Engine Oil (5.7 quarts of synthetic oil meeting VW 502 00 or VW 504 00 specs, e.g., 5W-40, 5W-30, or 0W-30)
  • Oil Filter (New OEM-spec cartridge)
  • Coolant (G13 or G12evo spec mixed 50/50 with distilled water)
  • Spark Plugs (New OE-spec gapped to 0.024" - 0.028")
  • Turbocharger installation kit (exhaust manifold gasket, turbo-to-downpipe gasket, oil/coolant line O-rings, and one-time-use copper nuts)
  • Intake manifold gasket
  • High-pressure fuel pump O-ring
  • Vacuum pump gasket
  • Water pump/thermostat assembly (updated metal housing recommended)
  • Rear main seal
  • Torque-to-Yield (TTY) stretch bolts (engine mounts, subframe, crankshaft pulley, flywheel/flexplate)
  • Haldex fluid and front differential/bevel box gear oil

What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:

⚠️ Requiredprogramming / calibration⚠️ Yesdealer tool needed⚠️ YesECU/PCM re-marriage

What’s involved: Immobilizer & Component Protection Re-marriage, Throttle Body Alignment, Cam/Crankshaft Position Sensor Adaptation, Fuel Injector Coding (IMA)

Sources differ on ECU remarriage requirements. To ensure a successful installation, plan for a professional online adaptation procedure using ODIS or equivalent dealer-level tools to re-marry the engine components to your car's security system, alongside standard sensor and throttle adaptations.

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

  • Transferring the Turbocharger: Must use a complete new turbo install kit. Reusing old gaskets or copper locknuts will guarantee exhaust, oil, or coolant leaks.
  • Fragile Plastic Oil Pan: Do NOT rest the weight of the engine on the plastic oil pan during transport or installation. Always use a new plastic drain plug and torque strictly to spec, or upgrade to a steel/aluminum pan.
  • Cooling System Bleeding: Highly complex system with an electronic rotary thermostat. You MUST use a vacuum cooling system filler to prevent air pockets and localized overheating.
  • Torque-to-Yield (TTY) Bolts: Many fasteners are one-time-use stretch bolts. They must be replaced and torqued to the manufacturer's torque-plus-angle specifications.
  • Ground Straps: A small ground strap on the cylinder head must be connected securely to prevent frying the ECU or causing sensor communication codes.
  • Turbocharger Priming: It is absolutely critical to prime the new or reused turbocharger with fresh engine oil before starting the engine for the first time to prevent immediate bearing damage.

Easy to get right once you know them:

  • Reusing Turbo Gaskets and Hardware: Trying to save money by reusing metal exhaust gaskets and copper nuts, resulting in severe exhaust leaks.
  • Failing to Prime the Oil System: Starting a dry engine immediately. You must disable the fuel/ignition system and crank the engine in 10-second intervals until the oil pressure light goes out.
  • Cracking the Oil Pan: Resting the engine on a wooden block under the plastic oil pan while aligning engine mounts.
  • Ordering for the Wrong Vehicle: Assuming any 2.0T EA888 engine from an Audi A3 or VW GTI will fit an S3. The S3's CYFB engine has a lower compression ratio, upgraded cylinder head alloy, larger exhaust valves, and different camshafts.
  • Incorrect ECU/Immobilizer Handling: Assuming the engine is plug-and-play and being surprised when the car will not start due to missing immobilizer adaptation.

Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every engine of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:

Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 300-76055A-5304422). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.

Policies, in plain English.

Shipping & Handling

  • Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
  • Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
  • The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
  • Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance

120-Day Warranty

This part includes a 120-day warranty.

  • If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
  • Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
  • Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation

Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.

Returns (30 Days)

We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.

  • Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
  • Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
  • Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
  • Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
  • Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited

Damaged in Shipping?

Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:

  • Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
  • Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
  • Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
  • Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery

We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.

Order Cancellation

Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
