Know This Engine Before You Buy

The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this engine family:

A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right engine shows up:

  • Check your VIN's 8th digit to confirm it is Y.
  • Confirm your drivetrain (AWD vs. FWD) to plan bracket transfers.
  • Inspect your existing turbocharger and exhaust manifold to ensure they are reusable.
🔎 Where to look: The engine code 'PY' is stamped on the engine block flange where it mates to the transmission. The VIN plate is located on the dashboard or driver's door jamb.

What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:

10 to 15 hoursshop labor$1,500 to $2,500typical shop bill, on top of the partAdvanced / ExpertDIY difficulty

Special tools this job needs:

  • Engine hoist and load leveler
  • Mazda-specific fuel line disconnect tools
  • 67.5 mm fluted oil filter wrench
  • High-quality torque wrench
  • Professional-grade scan tool (Mazda IDS or equivalent)
🔌 Wiring harness: The engine wiring harness must match the vehicle's model year. Since this is a 2016 donor engine going into a 2016–2017 CX-9, the harness is a direct plug-and-play, but you should always inspect and reuse your original vehicle's engine harness if the donor harness has any cut or damaged connectors.

Budget for these consumables at install:

  • SAE 5W-30 Full Synthetic oil (approx. 5.07 US quarts)
  • OEM Mazda oil filter (Part # PY8W-14-302)
  • Mazda FL-22 pre-mixed green coolant
  • NGK Laser Iridium Spark Plugs (Part # PY8V-18-110 / NGK 90288)
  • New exhaust manifold gasket (revised, thicker design)
  • New intake manifold gasket
  • New turbocharger oil/coolant feed line gaskets and O-rings
  • New OEM thermostat
  • Torque-to-yield (TTY) bolts (as specified by service manual)

What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:

⚠️ Requiredprogramming / calibration⚠️ Yesdealer tool needed⚠️ YesECU/PCM re-marriage

What’s involved: Parameter Reset and key reprogramming (PATS)

Sources differ: Arm 1 states no security/immobilizer re-marriage is required for the engine itself, while Arm 2 states a Parameter Reset and key reprogramming are required under PATS for the vehicle to start. Choosing the more cautious value (yes) and requiring a dealer-level scan tool.

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

  • Exhaust Manifold Gasket Revision: You must use the updated Mazda exhaust manifold gasket to prevent physical stress on the cylinder head.
  • AWD vs. FWD Bracket Transfer: Transfer the mounting brackets on the back of the engine block depending on your drivetrain configuration.
  • Vacuum and Solenoid Routing: Take detailed photos of the complex vacuum-controlled Dynamic Pressure Turbo valve system before disconnecting.
  • High-Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP) Caution: Safely depressurize the fuel system and replace the one-time-use high-pressure fuel pipe.
  • Parameter Reset is Not Optional: The engine will not start until the PATS parameter reset is performed with a compatible scan tool.
  • Transfer Case Handling (AWD): Inspect transfer case seals for leaks while it is removed.

Easy to get right once you know them:

  • Ordering for the Wrong Year (2018+): Mazda updated electrical connectors, vacuum solenoids, and cooling line routings starting in 2018.
  • Using the Wrong Oil Weight: Running 0W-20 instead of the required 5W-30 will cause rapid oil thinning and premature turbocharger bearing failure.
  • Reusing the Old Exhaust Manifold Gasket: Reusing the old gasket or using a cheap aftermarket non-revised gasket will almost guarantee a future cracked cylinder head.
  • Failing to Flush the Intercooler: Metal debris and oil may be trapped inside the intercooler from a previous engine failure, which can destroy the new engine.
  • Ignoring the 'LESS TURBO' Note: Failing to prepare to reuse your existing turbocharger or purchase a new/rebuilt one.
  • Not Budgeting for Programming: Assuming this is a simple plug-and-play swap without needing a high-end scan tool or mobile technician for PATS reset.
  • Assuming Other Mazda 2.5T Engines Fit: Buying a 2.5T engine from a Mazda6 or CX-5 assuming it is identical.

Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every engine of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:

severeCylinder Head Cracking & Coolant Leak2016–2020

🔎 Recommended at install: Inspect the cylinder head area behind the exhaust manifold for green/blue coolant residue before installing. Fix involves replacing the cylinder head with a redesigned part and a new exhaust manifold gasket.

moderateExcessive Oil Consumption / Valve Stem Seal Wear2016-2020

🔎 Recommended at install: Replace exhaust valve stem seals.

minorTiming Cover Oil LeakAll SkyActiv engines

🔎 Recommended at install: Address RTV sealant on the front timing chain cover while the engine is out of the vehicle.

moderateTransfer Case Fluid Leak (AWD Models)AWD models

🔎 Recommended at install: Disconnect and inspect transfer case seals during the engine swap.

minorGrowling/Whine Noise from Drivetrain2016 Mazda CX-9

🔎 Recommended at install: Often misdiagnosed as transmission/transfer case; check for a faulty wheel bearing.

Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 300-10636-5454440). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.

Policies, in plain English.

Shipping & Handling

  • Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
  • Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
  • The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
  • Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance

120-Day Warranty

This part includes a 120-day warranty.

  • If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
  • Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
  • Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation

Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.

Returns (30 Days)

We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.

  • Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
  • Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
  • Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
  • Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
  • Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited

Damaged in Shipping?

Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:

  • Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
  • Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
  • Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
  • Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery

We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.

Order Cancellation

Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
