Know This Engine Before You Buy
The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this engine family:
A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right engine shows up:
- Verify the 8th digit of your VIN is 'V'.
- Confirm your Engine RPO Code is LYX.
- Check your drivetrain configuration (FWD vs. AWD) to determine if you need to swap the oil pan.
- Inspect your original turbocharger to ensure it is in good, working condition and free of debris before transferring.
What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:
Special tools this job needs:
- Engine hoist and load leveler
- Torx and E-Torx socket sets (T-20, T-27, and E-Torx)
- Fuel line disconnect tools
- Bidirectional scan tool supporting GM Global B architecture / GDS 2
- GM-specific engine support fixture
- Torque-angle meter
Budget for these consumables at install:
- Engine Oil (SAE 0W-20 meeting GM dexos1 Gen 3 specification)
- Oil Filter
- Engine Coolant (GM-approved Dex-Cool 50/50 mix)
- Spark Plugs (ACDelco iridium, pre-gapped to 0.051 inches)
- Intake manifold gaskets
- Throttle body gasket
- Exhaust manifold gasket
- High-pressure fuel pump O-ring and fuel feed pipe
- Front and rear crankshaft seals
- Engine air filter
- Thermostat and Water Pump (preventative)
- Turbocharger mounting gaskets and oil line seals
What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:
What’s involved: Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor Relearn, Throttle Body Idle Air Volume Relearn, and Immobilizer/Security Relearn
A high-end, bidirectional scan tool with GM software (like GDS 2) is necessary. CKP relearn is mandatory to prevent misfire detection errors (P0300) and ensure proper engine operation. Immobilizer/Security Relearn is required to sync the ECM with the vehicle's security system.
Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:
- FWD vs. AWD Oil Pan Swap: If your vehicle is AWD and this engine is FWD (or vice versa), you must swap the upper and lower oil pans, the oil pickup tube, and the accessory brackets from your original engine. The AWD pan holds 5.3 quarts and clears the PTU, while the FWD pan holds 4.2 quarts.
- High-Pressure Fuel Pipe Replacement: The high-pressure fuel line running from the high-pressure pump to the fuel rail is a single-use, crush-to-seal component. Reusing it will cause a high-pressure fuel leak.
- Exhaust Cam-Driven Vacuum Pump: Ensure the drive coupling is perfectly aligned with the camshaft slot when transferring the vacuum pump. Forcing it on misaligned will shatter the pump coupling and send metal debris into the timing system.
- Fragile Camshaft Reluctor Wheels: The camshaft reluctor wheels are pressed onto the camshafts and can slip or get damaged easily if bumped during handling.
- Torque-to-Yield (TTY) Bolts: Critical components like cylinder heads and main bearing caps use TTY bolts which are single-use and must be replaced if loosened.
- Turbocharger Lines: When reinstalling your turbo, ensure oil and coolant lines are not kinked, are properly sealed, and that the oil feed line is primed before starting.
Easy to get right once you know them:
- Reusing the High-Pressure Fuel Pipe: Reusing this crush-fit line leads to dangerous fuel leaks over the hot engine block.
- Using the Wrong Oil Weight or Spec: Using standard 5W-30 or non-dexos certified oil triggers Low-Speed Pre-Ignition (LSPI), which shatters piston ring lands.
- Neglecting the PCV System Inspection: Transferring a clogged intake manifold PCV orifice to the new engine will quickly blow out the new engine's main seals.
- Ignoring the FWD/AWD Oil Pan Difference: Installing a FWD engine into an AWD vehicle without swapping the pan will cause the PTU to collide with the pan.
- Not Verifying the VIN Code: Ordering this engine for a vehicle with an 8th VIN digit other than 'V' leads to compatibility issues.
- Ignoring the Turbo: Failing to inspect the original turbo for debris contamination before transferring it to the new engine can cause immediate repeat failure.
Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every engine of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:
🔎 Recommended at install: GM Recall N182199610 / NHTSA Recall ID: 18V864000. Replace high-pressure fuel pump.
🔎 Recommended at install: GM TSB 18-NA-020. Moisture accumulates and freezes inside the intercooler, blocking airflow.
🔎 Recommended at install: GM TSB 20-NA-047 (replacing PIP5417C). Clean or replace the PCV orifice in the intake manifold to prevent high crankcase pressure from blowing out crankshaft oil seals.
🔎 Recommended at install: GM Service Update N192266090 / Emissions Recall N192271200. Install improved retainer clip.
🔎 Recommended at install: Use only dexos1 Gen 3 approved 0W-20 oil and high-quality fuel to prevent LSPI and cracked piston ring lands.
🔎 Recommended at install: TSB PIP5599F. Address hydraulic lash adjusters.
🔎 Recommended at install: Inspect and replace failing vacuum pump to prevent seizure and hard brake pedal.
Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 300-10219-5355548). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.
Policies, in plain English.
Shipping & Handling
- Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
- Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
- The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
- Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance
120-Day Warranty
This part includes a 120-day warranty.
- If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
- Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
- Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation
Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.
Returns (30 Days)
We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.
- Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
- Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
- Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
- Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
- Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited
Damaged in Shipping?
Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:
- Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
- Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
- Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
- Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery
We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.
Order Cancellation
Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
