The TCM inside the mechatronic unit is locked to the donor vehicle's VIN via Component Protection. This must be resolved either by cloning the original mechatronic's EEPROM/Flash data onto the replacement unit using bench tools (no dealer required), or by having an authorized dealer/specialist remove Component Protection online via ODIS/GEKO. A DSG Basic Settings calibration must also be performed post-install.
Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:
- Fluid Leveling Temperature Window: Fluid level must be set by filling from the bottom and letting excess drain at exactly 35°C to 45°C (95°F to 113°F) monitored via diagnostic software.
- Subframe Alignment: Dropping the front subframe is required. Alignment pins must be used during reinstallation to prevent suspension misalignment.
- Bevel Box (Transfer Case) Alignment: Ensure splines are perfectly aligned and the O-ring is seated correctly to prevent damage or leaks.
- Do Not Run Dry: Never start the engine or put the car in gear before filling the transmission with fluid.
- Component Protection Lockout: The vehicle will not operate correctly or crank if Component Protection is not unlocked.
- DSG Adaptation Drive Cycle: A specific gentle drive cycle is required after basic settings to allow the clutches to adapt fully.
