Know This Transmission Before You Buy

The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this transmission family:

A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right transmission shows up:

  • Confirm vehicle has a 5-speed manual transmission and the 2.0L FB20 engine.
  • Measure tread depth on all four tires to ensure they are within 2/32" of each other.
  • Locate and verify the transmission ID code on the bellhousing sticker.
🔎 Where to look: Look for a white barcode sticker or small metal plate on the top or upper-left side of the bellhousing, near the starter motor mating surface.

What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:

6 to 12 hoursshop labor900 to 2,200typical shop bill, on top of the partAdvancedDIY difficulty

Special tools this job needs:

  • T70 Torx Bit
  • Clutch Alignment Tool
  • Transmission Jack
  • Engine Support Bar / Jack / Hoist
🔌 Wiring harness: Fully mechanical manual transmission with simple electronic sensors for reverse lights and neutral position. No wiring harness compatibility issues.

Budget for these consumables at install:

  • API GL-5 rated 75W-90 gear oil (Subaru Extra MT / Extra-S recommended)
  • New clutch kit (clutch disc, pressure plate, throwout bearing)
  • New pilot bearing
  • New flywheel or professionally resurfaced existing flywheel
  • Left and right front output shaft axle seals
  • Engine rear main seal

What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:

✅ Not requiredprogramming / calibration✅ Nodealer tool needed✅ NoECU/PCM re-marriage

What’s involved: none

This is a traditional, mechanically and hydraulically controlled manual transmission. It does not contain a TCM, electronic solenoids, or computer components, requiring no programming or VIN-matching.

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

  • The T70 Torx Drain Plug: Must use a dedicated T70 Torx socket to avoid instantly stripping the plug.
  • Seized Alignment Dowel Pins: Steel dowels are prone to rusting and seizing to the engine block. Clean and apply anti-seize before mating.
  • Input Shaft Snout Wear: Inspect the aluminum snout for grooves. If worn, a stainless steel repair sleeve (TSK snout kit) must be installed.
  • Axle Roll Pins: Ensure splines are aligned carefully and roll pins are driven completely flush.
  • Clutch Release Fork Pin: May require a specific bolt extractor method to remove the pivot shaft from the outside of the bellhousing.
  • Crankshaft Position Sensor Plate: Do not forget to reinstall this plate with the flywheel, or it will cause a crank-no-start condition.
  • Engine/Transmission Alignment: Ensure smooth alignment to prevent damaging the input shaft, pilot bearing, or clutch.

Easy to get right once you know them:

  • Mismatched Tires: Running mismatched brands, models, sizes, or tread depths (greater than 2/32" difference) will overheat and destroy the viscous center differential.
  • Accidentally Draining Engine Oil: Mistakenly draining engine oil instead of the transmission fluid due to proximity of the pans.
  • Reusing a Bad Throwout Bearing: Reusing old or cheap bearings leads to premature failure and squealing, requiring the transmission to be pulled again.
  • Using Incorrect Gear Oil: Failing to use API GL-5 rated 75W-90 gear oil.
  • Ignoring Worn Axle Seals: Failing to replace old seals leads to immediate gear oil leaks.
  • Forgetting the Rear Main Seal: Missing the opportunity to replace the rear main seal while the transmission is removed.

Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every transmission of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:

severeViscous Coupler Binding2014–2017

🔎 Recommended at install: Replace center differential viscous coupling; ensure all four tires are identical in brand, model, size, and tread depth.

moderateShift Fork Wear / Vibration / Failure2014–2017

🔎 Recommended at install: Replace worn shift forks or shift fork inserts. Refer to TSB 03-83-20R for similar 2018+ issues.

moderateThrowout Bearing Squeal2014–2017

🔎 Recommended at install: Install a brand-new high-quality throwout bearing; if aluminum snout is worn, install a stainless steel input shaft repair sleeve (PDM/TSK snout kit).

minorBrake Light Switch Recall2013-2017

🔎 Recommended at install: Replace brake light switch under recall (primarily affects CVT park lock, but is a vehicle-level recall).

Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 400-62653-5351982). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.

Policies, in plain English.

Shipping & Handling

  • Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
  • Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
  • The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
  • Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance

120-Day Warranty

This part includes a 120-day warranty.

  • If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
  • Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
  • Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation

Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.

Returns (30 Days)

We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.

  • Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
  • Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
  • Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
  • Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
  • Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited

Damaged in Shipping?

Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:

  • Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
  • Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
  • Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
  • Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery

We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.

Order Cancellation

Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
