Know This Transmission Before You Buy
The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this transmission family:
A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right transmission shows up:
- Locate driver-side green metal tag/barcode plate on transmission casing to confirm 10-digit ZF piece list number and model designation.
- Verify vehicle is RWD (not AWD).
- Confirm vehicle does NOT have an ECO automatic engine stop/start feature.
- Verify engine application.
What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:
Special tools this job needs:
- OBD2 diagnostic scanner with real-time ATF temperature monitoring (JLR SDD, Pathfinder, Autel, or iCarsoft)
- Fluid transfer hand pump with ZF fill adapter
- E-Torx socket set
- Low-range torque wrench (inch-lbs / Nm)
Budget for these consumables at install:
- ZF LifeguardFluid 8 (or OE spec ATF AW-1 / Shell L12108 / Febi 39070)
- New ZF 8HP oil pan kit with integrated filter, embedded magnets, rubber gasket, fill plug, and new bolts
- Torque converter hub seal, rear output shaft seal, and cooler line O-rings
- Chemical cooler line flush kit
What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:
What’s involved: TCM Adaptive Relearn + EGS Security / VIN Re-Marriage
The Transmission Control Module (TCM) is integrated inside the internal Mechatronic valve body and is VIN-locked. Installing without programming triggers an immobilizer lockout or Limp Mode. You must either clone your original TCM data to the replacement unit, swap your original working Mechatronic valve body into the replacement transmission, or perform a security remarriage using JLR SDD/Pathfinder software, followed by an adaptation reset and relearn.
Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:
- TORQUE CONVERTER SEATING: Ensure the torque converter is fully seated into the internal pump gears (3 distinct stages) before mating to the engine block. Tightening bellhousing bolts on an unseated converter will shatter the internal transmission oil pump.
- FLUID FILL TEMPERATURE PROCEDURE: Strictly follow bottom-fill temperature window with car level on a lift and engine running in Park. Fluid temperature must be monitored via scan tool between 30°C and 50°C (86°F–122°F). Opening fill plug with engine off causes severe fluid loss.
- PLASTIC PAN TORQUE: Torque plastic pan bolts in criss-cross pattern strictly to 10 Nm (88 in-lbs) to avoid cracking bosses or warping seals.
- COOLER LINE FLUSH: Always flush external cooler lines prior to connection to prevent debris from past failure jamming Mechatronic solenoids.
Easy to get right once you know them:
- Ordering for an ECO Stop/Start vehicle (lacks internal hydraulic accumulator needed for stop/start systems).
- Using non-approved multi-vehicle or generic Dexron ATF instead of ZF Lifeguard 8, causing shift shudder and clutch damage.
- Reusing the old plastic pan/filter assembly instead of installing a brand new pan and integrated filter.
- Checking or filling ATF level with the engine turned off.
- Skipping TCM VIN re-marriage / cloning or adaptive reset, leaving vehicle locked in Park or Limp Mode.
- Forcing bellhousing bolts to pull the transmission case against the engine block without verifying torque converter clearance.
Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every transmission of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:
🔎 Recommended at install: Update TCM software via JLR diagnostic equipment.
🔎 Recommended at install: Requires full transmission unit replacement and radiator flush/replacement.
🔎 Recommended at install: Replace with new oil pan kit and gasket; observe precise criss-cross bolt torque specs.
🔎 Recommended at install: Perform fluid/filter service every 50k-60k miles; replace worn solenoids or Mechatronic unit.
🔎 Recommended at install: Inspect battery voltage, CAN bus communication, and engine misfires before replacing hardware.
Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 400-62561-3054147). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.
Policies, in plain English.
Shipping & Handling
- Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
- Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
- The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
- Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance
120-Day Warranty
This part includes a 120-day warranty.
- If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
- Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
- Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation
Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.
Returns (30 Days)
We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.
- Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
- Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
- Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
- Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
- Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited
Damaged in Shipping?
Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:
- Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
- Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
- Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
- Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery
We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.
Order Cancellation
Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
