Know This Transmission Before You Buy
The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this transmission family:
A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right transmission shows up:
- Verify engine type is 3.0L V6 TDI Diesel (Engine code CPNB or CGQB).
- Confirm transmission code is NVF on the build sticker (located in the spare tire well in the trunk or inside the front cover of the service book).
- Confirm vehicle is equipped with Quattro All-Wheel Drive (AWD).
What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:
Special tools this job needs:
- Vehicle lift and professional-grade transmission jack
- Triple square (XZN) socket set (specifically M10, M12, and M14)
- Torx bit set (T27, T30, T40)
- Fluid transfer pump with hook-style filler adapter (VAS 6262A or equivalent)
- Diagnostic scan tool (VCDS, ODIS, or equivalent bidirectional scanner)
- Engine support bar
Budget for these consumables at install:
- ZF Lifeguard 8 ATF (Audi spec G 060 162 A2) - 9 liters for complete swap
- Audi 0BK Transmission Service Kit (Part number 0BK 398 009 or 0BK 398 009 A) including filter, pan gasket, and 12 single-use aluminum pan bolts
- Torque Converter Seal (input shaft/pump seal)
- Professional aerosol transmission cooler line flush
- Front Differential Fluid: 1.0 liter of synthetic gear oil (Audi spec G 052 145 S2 or SAE 75W-90)
- Axle seals and driveshaft bolts
What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:
What’s involved: Component Protection removal and TCM adaptive relearn
The TCM is subject to Audi's Component Protection anti-theft system. Installing the donor TCM will lock the transmission (DTC P1701). You must either have an Audi dealer/specialist unlock it online via ODIS (GeKo), or swap your original functional mechatronics unit into the replacement transmission. A clutch adaptation reset and standstill adaptation drive cycle are required regardless of the method used.
Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:
- Torque Converter Seating: Ensure the torque converter is fully seated (three distinct clicks/drops) before bolting to the engine to avoid cracking the internal oil pump.
- Cooler Line Alignment & O-Rings: Replace O-rings and ensure perfect alignment to prevent fluid starvation.
- Fluid Fill Temperature: Fluid level must be checked strictly between 30°C and 40°C (max 50°C) with the engine running and cycling through gears.
- Standstill Adaptation Prerequisites: Vehicle must be level, engine idling, fluid at 40°C, doors/hood/trunk closed, foot firmly on brake, and parking brake set.
- Mechatronic/TCM Swap: Swapping the original mechatronics unit to bypass Component Protection must be done in a surgically clean environment.
Easy to get right once you know them:
- Ordering for a Gas Engine: Buying this transmission for a 3.0T supercharged gasoline engine. The bellhousing bolt pattern and gear ratios are completely different.
- Reusing Aluminum Pan Bolts: Reusing the single-use stretch bolts leads to them snapping or backing out, causing catastrophic fluid leaks.
- Using the Wrong ATF: Using generic multi-vehicle ATF instead of genuine ZF Lifeguard 8 causes immediate clutch chatter and failure.
- Skipping the Component Protection Unlock: Assuming the unit is plug-and-play and misdiagnosing the resulting anti-theft lock/limp mode as a defective transmission.
- Failing to Flush the Cooler: Skipping the cooler flush allows debris from the previous failed transmission to contaminate and destroy the replacement unit.
Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every transmission of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:
🔎 Recommended at install: Update TCM software using Software Version Management (SVM) code 02A072.
🔎 Recommended at install: Ensure correct fluid level. Update TCM software using SVM code 02A048 or 02A072, clear adaptation values, and perform standstill adaptation.
🔎 Recommended at install: Inspect transmission oil cooler and flush lines before installing replacement. Replace cooler if coolant contamination is found.
🔎 Recommended at install: Replace or swap the mechatronic unit, or address Component Protection at a dealer.
Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 400-62535-2186398). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.
Policies, in plain English.
Shipping & Handling
- Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
- Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
- The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
- Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance
120-Day Warranty
This part includes a 120-day warranty.
- If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
- Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
- Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation
Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.
Returns (30 Days)
We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.
- Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
- Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
- Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
- Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
- Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited
Damaged in Shipping?
Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:
- Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
- Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
- Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
- Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery
We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.
Order Cancellation
Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
