Know This Transmission Before You Buy

The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this transmission family:

A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right transmission shows up:

  • Confirm the 3-letter transmission code is either NEU or NXT on the build identification sticker.
  • Confirm the vehicle is equipped with Quattro All-Wheel Drive (AWD).
  • Confirm the vehicle has the 3.0L Supercharged V6 gasoline engine.
🔎 Where to look: Locate the build identification sticker in the spare tire well under the trunk floor carpet or on the inside cover of the service booklet to find the 3-letter transmission code.

What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:

8-12shop labor1200-2000typical shop bill, on top of the partExpertDIY difficulty

Special tools this job needs:

  • Triple Square (XZN) socket set
  • Torx bit set
  • Transmission jack
  • Fluid transfer pump
  • Advanced diagnostic scan tool (Audi ODIS, VCDS, or OBDeleven)
  • Engine support brace
  • Specialty tool T50069 (or equivalent) for torque converter bolts
🔌 Wiring harness: External wiring harnesses are not included. Swapping the original mechatronics/TCM unit into the replacement transmission is an alternative option to avoid Component Protection programming, but requires dropping the pan and replacing the gasket and fluid.

Budget for these consumables at install:

  • Transmission Fluid (ATF): ZF Lifeguard Fluid 8 or Audi factory spec G 060 162 A2 (approx. 7 to 10 Liters/Quarts for full fill)
  • Filter & Pan Gasket Kit (Audi OEM part number 0BK398009A, includes new single-use aluminum pan bolts)
  • Torque Converter Seal (OEM part number 0BK-498-111-B or equivalent)
  • Axle output shaft seals
  • Dedicated aerosol transmission cooler-line flush
  • Quattro Differential Fluids (SAE 75W-90 synthetic, Audi spec G 055 145 A2) for front and center differentials

What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:

⚠️ Requiredprogramming / calibration⚠️ Yesdealer tool needed⚠️ YesECU/PCM re-marriage

What’s involved: Security/Immobilizer Re-marriage (Audi Component Protection) and TCM Adaptive Relearn

The transmission features an internal mechatronics unit containing the TCM. Audi's Component Protection system will detect a VIN mismatch and lock the transmission (fault code P1701). Removal of Component Protection must be performed online by an authorized Audi dealer or independent specialist with an active Audi ODIS GeKo account.

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

  • Torque Converter Seating: Ensure the torque converter is fully seated (feeling three distinct clunks) before bolting to the engine to avoid crushing the internal oil pump.
  • Temperature-Dependent Fluid Leveling: Fluid level must be checked with the vehicle perfectly level, engine running, and fluid temperature strictly between 35°C and 45°C (or 30°C and 40°C depending on spec) using a diagnostic tool.
  • Quattro Differential Fluids: The unit contains three separate fluid chambers (ATF, front differential, and center differential) which must be checked and filled separately.
  • Accessing Torque Converter Bolts: May require removing the starter motor to access bolts through the bellhousing. Use a high-quality six-point socket and break loose by hand.
  • Subframe and Mounts: Requires removing the entire subframe and transmission mount crossmember. Pay attention to alignment marks and use new stretch bolts where specified.

Easy to get right once you know them:

  • Assuming 'Plug-and-Play' Swap: Expecting the car to drive immediately without removing the Component Protection lock via ODIS.
  • Reusing Aluminum Pan Bolts: Reusing the old stretch-to-yield bolts can cause them to snap or back out, leading to catastrophic fluid leaks.
  • Using Generic ATF: Using cheap, generic multi-vehicle ATF causes immediate transmission shuddering, harsh shifting, and clutch slippage.
  • Skipping the Cooler Flush: Debris from the previous failed transmission will circulate into the replacement unit and cause immediate damage.
  • Misdiagnosing the Original Problem: Replacing the entire transmission when the issue is actually a faulty sensor, software problem, or solenoid.

Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 400-51821-4421534). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.

Policies, in plain English.

Shipping & Handling

  • Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
  • Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
  • The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
  • Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance

120-Day Warranty

This part includes a 120-day warranty.

  • If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
  • Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
  • Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation

Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.

Returns (30 Days)

We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.

  • Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
  • Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
  • Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
  • Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
  • Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited

Damaged in Shipping?

Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:

  • Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
  • Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
  • Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
  • Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery

We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.

Order Cancellation

Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
