Know This Transmission Before You Buy
The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this transmission family:
A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right transmission shows up:
- Verify the 8th digit of the VIN is 'C' or 'E' (Supercharged V8). If it is 'B' (naturally aspirated), this unit will not fit.
- Verify the vehicle is Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD).
- Locate and photograph the green or black metal ID plate on the driver's side of the transmission case to verify the 10-digit ZF part number starts with 1068 040 or 1068 042.
What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:
Special tools this job needs:
- OBD2 diagnostic scanner capable of reading transmission fluid temperature and performing TCM adaptation reset (e.g., JLR SDD)
- Fluid pump to fill transmission from the side fill plug
- Torx bits (T27/T40)
- Infrared thermometer (if scanner is unavailable)
Budget for these consumables at install:
- ZF Lifeguard 6 fluid (or Shell M1375.4 / Mercon SP equivalent)
- Plastic oil pan with integrated filter, gasket, and bolts
- Mechatronic connector sleeve (bulkhead sleeve)
- Rubber bridge adapter seal (double-D seal)
- Four rubber sealing sleeves (tubes)
- Torque converter front pump seal
- Transmission cooler line flush
What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:
What’s involved: VIN-specific programming, immobilizer/security re-marriage, and TCM adaptive relearn.
The TCM is integrated into the Mechatronic unit inside the transmission and is electronically married to the vehicle's security system. Installing a used unit requires either swapping your original working Mechatronic unit or using JLR SDD software to program your VIN and re-marry the TCM. A full transmission adaptation reset is mandatory. Sources differ on whether programming is strictly required if you swap the original Mechatronic, but agree that adaptation reset is always required.
Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:
- Torque converter must be fully seated into the front pump before bolting the transmission to the engine to avoid cracking the pump gear.
- The transmission has no dipstick; final fluid level check must be done with the engine running, transmission in Park, and fluid temperature strictly between 30°C and 50°C (86°F to 122°F).
- Ensure alignment dowel pins are in place on the engine block to prevent misalignment and rapid pump failure.
- The electrical connector sleeve must be replaced and fully locked to prevent CAN-bus communication errors and fluid leaks.
Easy to get right once you know them:
- Using generic multi-vehicle ATF or ZF Lifeguard 8 instead of the specified ZF Lifeguard 6.
- Plugging in a used transmission without swapping or programming the TCM, causing the vehicle to refuse to crank or lock in Park.
- Skipping the transmission cooler flush, which recontaminates the replacement unit with debris from the failed unit.
- Improper fluid level check (checking with engine off or at the wrong temperature).
- Misdiagnosing a 'Gearbox Fault' light that is actually caused by a weak battery, faulty wheel speed sensors, or engine misfires.
Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every transmission of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:
🔎 Recommended at install: TCM software update and resetting transmission adaptations.
🔎 Recommended at install: Replace the rubber bridge adapter seal and the round bulkhead sleeve connector.
🔎 Recommended at install: Replace torque converter; flush system to clear metallic debris.
🔎 Recommended at install: Replace solenoids inside the Mechatronic unit.
🔎 Recommended at install: Diagnostic verification to prevent misdiagnosis as transmission issue.
Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 400-51391B-2521752). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.
Policies, in plain English.
Shipping & Handling
- Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
- Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
- The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
- Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance
120-Day Warranty
This part includes a 120-day warranty.
- If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
- Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
- Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation
Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.
Returns (30 Days)
We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.
- Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
- Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
- Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
- Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
- Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited
Damaged in Shipping?
Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:
- Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
- Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
- Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
- Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery
We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.
Order Cancellation
Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
