Know This Transmission Before You Buy

The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this transmission family:

A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right transmission shows up:

  • Confirm the vehicle is Front-Wheel Drive (FWD) and not All-Wheel Drive (AWD).
  • Verify the engine is the 3.6L V6 gasoline engine and not the Hybrid model.
  • Locate the transmission identification tag on the side or top of the case to verify the 10-digit ZF part number (e.g., 1094 010 xxx) or OEM part number (68595373AA).
🔎 Where to look: The transmission identification tag is located on the top of the transmission case, directly under the shifter cable bracket and PCM. You must remove the PCM and shifter cable bracket bolts to view it.

What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:

7.1 to 10.0 hoursshop labor1100 to 1800typical shop bill, on top of the partExpertDIY difficulty

Special tools this job needs:

  • Mopar Transmission Fluid Dipstick Tool P/N 10323A
  • OBD2 Scan Tool with Chrysler bi-directional capabilities (wiTECH or equivalent)
  • Engine support bar/fixture
  • Transmission jack
🔌 Wiring harness: The 948TE valve body is highly sensitive to debris. If the previous unit suffered catastrophic failure, the cooler lines must be thoroughly flushed to prevent contamination of the replacement unit.

Budget for these consumables at install:

  • Mopar ZF 8 & 9 Speed ATF (P/N 68157995AB / 68218925AB or equivalent meeting ZF Lifeguard 9 specifications)
  • Torque-Converter Seal
  • Axle shaft seals
  • Professional-grade cooler-line flush

What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:

What’s involved: TCM Adaptive Relearn (Quick Learn) and PROXI Configuration Alignment

A mandatory TCM adaptive relearn (Quick Learn) must be performed using a dealer-level scan tool (wiTECH) or high-end professional bi-directional aftermarket scan tool. Failure to perform this will result in extremely harsh shifting, slipping, or immediate limp mode. Transferring or programming the TCM to match the vehicle's VIN is required.

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

  • Torque Converter Seating: The torque converter must be fully and correctly seated into the front pump (clicking multiple times). Improper seating will break the front pump upon bolting to the engine, destroying the transmission.
  • Fluid Level Check Procedure: There is no traditional dipstick. Fluid level must be checked via a fill plug on the side of the case while the engine is running and fluid temperature is strictly between 37°C and 45°C (99°F to 113°F).
  • Adaptive Relearn is NOT Optional: Skipping the electronic relearn procedure will lead to very poor performance and potential damage.
  • Subframe Removal: The entire front subframe assembly must be lowered to remove the transmission, requiring engine support from above.
  • Cooler Line Flush: Debris from the old transmission must be professionally flushed out of the cooler lines to prevent immediate failure of the replacement valve body.

Easy to get right once you know them:

  • Ignoring Software Updates: Failing to update the vehicle's TCM to the latest software version before performing the relearn.
  • Using Incorrect Fluid: Using generic multi-vehicle ATF instead of the specified pale green Mopar 8 & 9 Speed ATF / ZF Lifeguard 9.
  • Assuming Plug and Play: Underestimating the necessity of the electronic adaptive relearn procedure and assuming a physical install is sufficient.
  • Incomplete Cooler Flush: Performing a quick, insufficient flush instead of a professional, high-volume flush to clear out metal debris.

Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 400-11663-5229961). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.

Policies, in plain English.

Shipping & Handling

  • Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
  • Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
  • The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
  • Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance

120-Day Warranty

This part includes a 120-day warranty.

  • If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
  • Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
  • Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation

Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.

Returns (30 Days)

We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.

  • Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
  • Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
  • Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
  • Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
  • Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited

Damaged in Shipping?

Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:

  • Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
  • Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
  • Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
  • Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery

We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.

Order Cancellation

Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
