Know This Transmission Before You Buy

The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this transmission family:

A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right transmission shows up:

  • Check your VIN's 5th and 6th digits: TC2 indicates AWD, TC1 indicates FWD.
  • Verify the Transmission Code on your original unit: Confirm that your original transmission code is PYKA (for AWD) or PYLA (for FWD) on the white barcode sticker.
  • Confirm your Model Year: Look at the safety certification label on your driver's doorjamb to confirm your vehicle's model year is 2022, 2023, or 2024.
🔎 Where to look: Locate the white barcode sticker on the top or side of your transmission case to find the PYKA or PYLA code.

What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:

8 to 12 hoursshop labor$1,000 to $2,200 USDtypical shop bill, on top of the partExpertDIY difficulty

Special tools this job needs:

  • Engine support bridge/bar
  • Subframe jack or adapter
  • Professional, bidirectional scan tool (Honda iHDS or equivalent) capable of performing TCM adaptive resets and solenoid threshold writes
🔌 Wiring harness: The electronics and wiring harnesses were updated for the 2022–2024 model years. Installing an older 2019–2021 unit will result in electrical connector mismatches and communication codes.

Budget for these consumables at install:

  • Acura ATF Type 2.0 (Acura Part Number: 08200-9015A or Honda Part Number: 08200-9015)
  • External cartridge filter (Part Number: 25450-P4V-013) and O-ring (Part Number: 91305-PN4-003)
  • Torque converter input shaft seal
  • Both axle shaft seals
  • High-pressure transmission cooler line flush

What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:

⚠️ Model-dependentprogramming / calibration⚠️ Yesdealer tool needed⚠️ YesECU/PCM re-marriage

What’s involved: TCM Adaptive Relearn / Solenoid Threshold Reset (if reusing original TCM); Keyless Access System Registration and Immobilizer Re-marriage (if replacing TCM)

If reusing your original TCM, you must perform a TCM Adaptive Relearn / Solenoid Threshold Reset using a professional scan tool. If replacing the TCM, the vehicle will not start until you perform a Keyless Access System Registration and Immobilizer Re-marriage using a dealer-level Honda/Acura HDS scan tool.

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

  • Torque Converter Seating: Ensure the torque converter is fully seated onto the transmission input shaft and front fluid pump before bolting the transmission to the engine block. It must drop back into the case through three distinct clicks. If not fully seated, bolting the transmission to the engine will instantly crush and crack the internal oil pump gear.
  • Sealed Level-Check Procedure: This transmission does not have a dipstick. Follow the strict check-bolt procedure at operating temperature with the vehicle perfectly level.
  • AWD Transfer Case Alignment: When reinstalling the SH-AWD transfer case (PTU) to the transmission, ensure the splines are perfectly aligned and clean. Never force the transfer case onto the transmission case using the mounting bolts.
  • Cooler Line Flush: You must perform a professional high-pressure flush of the transmission cooler lines and the fluid warmer/cooler heat exchanger to clear out any metal shavings or debris from the failed unit.

Easy to get right once you know them:

  • Ordering the Wrong Drivetrain Version: Failing to check whether their RDX is FWD or AWD. Because the AWD version (PYKA) has a completely different case casting to accommodate the transfer unit, a FWD transmission cannot be installed in an AWD vehicle.
  • Using the Wrong Fluid: Filling the 10-speed transmission with standard Honda ATF DW-1, ATF Type 3.1, or universal multi-vehicle ATF. This transmission requires ATF Type 2.0 exclusively.
  • Failing to Perform the TCM Adaptive Relearn: Swapping the transmission and driving the vehicle immediately without resetting the TCM's learned adaptive values, resulting in extremely harsh shifting, gear-slippage, and potential clutch damage.
  • Assuming 2019–2021 Transmissions Fit: Assuming any 3rd-generation RDX 10-speed transmission is compatible. The electronics and wiring harnesses were updated for the 2022–2024 model years.

Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every transmission of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:

minorTSB B23-010 (Software Update)2022-2024

🔎 Recommended at install: PCM software update to address engine cold-start misfire codes (P0300–P0304). No transmission mechanical impact.

moderateTSB 20-053 (Community 'Limp Mode' Note)2022-2024

🔎 Recommended at install: Condensation pooling in the engine's front-mount intercooler causes a severe misfire under hard acceleration. The fix is an updated intercooler assembly, not a transmission replacement.

minorHarsh 2nd-to-3rd Gear Shifts2022-2024

🔎 Recommended at install: Typically a software calibration or adaptive learning issue rather than a mechanical failure.

moderateNHTSA Recall 21V932000 (Improperly heat-treated front driveshafts)2021-2022

🔎 Recommended at install: Driveshaft replacement. Affects a very small number of vehicles; driveline component handled during a transmission swap.

Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 400-11447-5233737). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.

Policies, in plain English.

Shipping & Handling

  • Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
  • Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
  • The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
  • Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance

120-Day Warranty

This part includes a 120-day warranty.

  • If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
  • Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
  • Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation

Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.

Returns (30 Days)

We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.

  • Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
  • Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
  • Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
  • Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
  • Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited

Damaged in Shipping?

Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:

  • Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
  • Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
  • Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
  • Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery

We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.

Order Cancellation

Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
