Know This Transmission Before You Buy

The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this transmission family:

A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right transmission shows up:

  • Check the 8th digit of the VIN to confirm the truck has the 5.7L Hemi V8 with the eTorque mild-hybrid system (replaces standard alternator with a motor-generator unit).
  • Confirm the truck is a 4x4 model with a transfer case.
  • Confirm the truck has 6-lug wheels (new style DT body, not 5-lug Classic DS body).
  • Locate the white barcode sticker on the driver's side of the transmission case and verify the original part number matches Mopar P/N 68550344AA.
🔎 Where to look: Look at the driver's side of the transmission case, near the rear bottom just above the oil pan, for a metal plate with a 10-digit ZF parts list number (typically starting with 1102 010) and a unique serial number, or a white Mopar barcode label on the side of the case.

What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:

5-9shop labor750-1500typical shop bill, on top of the partAdvanced / ExpertDIY difficulty

Special tools this job needs:

  • Heavy-duty transmission jack
  • OBD2 scan tool with programming capabilities (e.g., AlfaOBD, WiTECH 2.0, or high-end Autel)
  • Secure Gateway Module (SGW) bypass cable
  • Fluid transfer pump
  • Infrared thermometer or scan tool to monitor transmission fluid temperature
  • Extensive socket set with various extensions and swivels
  • Torque wrench
🔌 Wiring harness: Requires Secure Gateway Module (SGW) bypass cable on 2018+ Ram trucks to allow aftermarket scan tools to write data for VIN programming and adaptive relearn.

Budget for these consumables at install:

  • ZF Lifeguard 8 or Mopar 8&9 Speed ATF (Part# 68218925AB) - purchase 10 quarts
  • New transmission pan assembly with integrated filter (Mopar P/N 68225344AA, Dorman 265-850F, or equivalent) and gasket
  • Front torque converter seal (pump input shaft seal)
  • Rear transfer case adapter seal
  • Professional aerosol transmission cooler flush (e.g., Lubegard Kooler Kleen)

What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:

What’s involved: VIN-specific programming and TCM adaptive relearn (Quick Learn / Static Adaptation)

The TCM is integrated into the internal valve body and is VIN-locked to the donor vehicle. If installed without programming, the vehicle will not start or will enter limp-in mode. A dealer-level tool (wiTECH 2.0) or capable aftermarket tool (like AlfaOBD) paired with an SGW bypass cable is required to write the VIN and perform the clutch adaptive relearn.

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

  • Torque Converter Seating: Must drop/click into place three distinct times. If not fully seated, tightening the bellhousing bolts will crack the internal oil pump, destroying the transmission instantly.
  • Thermal Bypass Valve (TBV) Inspection: Inspect or replace the TBV assembly on the side of the case, or install an aftermarket thermal bypass delete kit to prevent overheating.
  • Fluid Fill Temperature Window: No dipstick. Must fill through the side plug while the engine is running, the truck is level, and fluid temperature is strictly between 30°C and 50°C (86°F to 122°F).
  • SGW Bypass Cable: Must plug an SGW bypass cable into the harness under the dashboard on 2018+ models to allow programming.
  • Dowel Pins: Ensure alignment dowel pins are present on the engine block before mating the transmission to prevent vibration and damage.

Easy to get right once you know them:

  • Ordering for a Non-eTorque Truck: Buying an eTorque transmission (DFR) for a non-eTorque truck (DFV) or vice versa. They use different torque converters and TCM software calibrations.
  • Using Cheap Aftermarket Oil Pans: Cheap aftermarket aluminum pans can be too shallow internally, putting physical pressure on the internal parking pawl mechanism and preventing the truck from shifting into Park.
  • Skipping the Cooler Flush: Failing to flush the cooler lines will wash metallic debris from the previous failure into the new valve body, ruining the solenoids.
  • Failing to Program the VIN: Assuming the truck can be driven to a shop for programming. The security system will prevent starting or lock the transmission in Park until programmed.
  • Using the Wrong Fluid: Using generic multi-vehicle ATF instead of Mopar 8&9 Speed ATF or certified ZF Lifeguard 8 equivalent.

Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every transmission of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:

severeRecall 24V-413 (Stellantis Recall ID 56B) - Insufficient weld between TCM cover and baseplate can allow fluid to leak onto electrical components, causing sudden loss of transmission control, motive power, or park function.2023-2024 Ram 1500

🔎 Recommended at install: Check VIN with dealer to see if replacement valve body/TCM is covered under safety recall.

moderateTSB 21-001-23 (supersedes 21-034-22) - Rough shifting, gear hunting, check engine light for incorrect gear ratio code (P0735), bumps/hesitation at low speeds, or coast-down bump in tow/haul mode.2022 Ram 1500 built on or before September 28, 2022, with 5.7L eTorque engine

🔎 Recommended at install: Reprogram the TCM with the latest software calibration.

moderateThermal Bypass Valve (TBV) Failure - Internal thermostat frequently sticks closed, preventing fluid from reaching the cooler and causing transmission temperatures to exceed 200°F-210°F+.All years

🔎 Recommended at install: Inspect/replace the TBV assembly or install an aftermarket thermal bypass delete kit.

minorRough Shifting (3-2 and 2-1 downshifts, lag, or hesitation). All years

🔎 Recommended at install: Perform a 'quick learn' or 'TCM adaptation' procedure to reset adaptive learning software.

minoreTorque Stalling/Hesitation - Engine stalling when coming to a stop or laggy acceleration due to complex interaction between engine, 48V hybrid system, and transmission. All eTorque models

🔎 Recommended at install: Software updates for the engine, hybrid system, and transmission.

Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 400-11129-5335549). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.

Policies, in plain English.

Shipping & Handling

  • Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
  • Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
  • The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
  • Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance

120-Day Warranty

This part includes a 120-day warranty.

  • If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
  • Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
  • Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation

Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.

Returns (30 Days)

We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.

  • Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
  • Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
  • Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
  • Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
  • Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited

Damaged in Shipping?

Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:

  • Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
  • Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
  • Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
  • Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery

We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.

Order Cancellation

Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
