Know This Transmission Before You Buy

The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this transmission family:

A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right transmission shows up:

  • Verify electrical system: Look for a traditional alternator (12V non-eTorque) vs. a large belt-driven motor-generator unit and 48V battery (eTorque).
  • Verify drivetrain: Confirm the vehicle is a 4x4 with a front driveshaft and transfer case.
  • Verify engine size: Confirm the vehicle has the 5.7L Hemi V8 engine.
  • Check the transmission tag on the driver's side rear bottom of the transmission case to verify model 8HP75 and part number 68269509AA.
🔎 Where to look: Locate the barcode sticker or stamped metal plate on the left-hand (driver's) side rear bottom of the transmission case, just above the oil pan rail.

What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:

5.5-12shop labor825-1800typical shop bill, on top of the partExpertDIY difficulty

Special tools this job needs:

  • Transmission jack
  • Heavy-duty jack stands
  • Torque converter holding bracket
  • Bi-directional scan tool (wiTECH, AlfaOBD, or Autel)
  • Torque wrench
  • Fluid pump for refilling
  • 10mm hex bit
  • T40 Torx sockets
🔌 Wiring harness: Wiring harnesses differ significantly between eTorque, 2WD, V6, and heavy-duty truck variants. This unit is strictly for the 12V non-eTorque 4x4 V8 configuration.

Budget for these consumables at install:

  • ZF Lifeguard Fluid 8 (or Mopar 8 & 9 Speed ATF)
  • Replacement plastic transmission oil pan with integrated filter, gasket, and single-use pan bolts
  • Front torque converter seal (front pump input shaft seal)
  • Rear output shaft seal
  • High-pressure transmission cooler-line flush solvent

What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:

⚠️ Requiredprogramming / calibration⚠️ Yesdealer tool needed⚠️ YesECU/PCM re-marriage

What’s involved: VIN-specific programming, immobilizer re-marriage, and TCM adaptive relearn (Proxi Alignment and Quick Learn)

The TCM is integrated inside the mechatronic valve body and is electronically locked to the donor vehicle's VIN. It must be programmed using a dealer-level scan tool (wiTECH) or specialized aftermarket tool (AlfaOBD). Alternatively, the original mechatronic valve body assembly can be swapped into the replacement transmission to make it plug-and-play.

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

  • Torque Converter Seating: Ensure the torque converter is fully seated (three distinct drops/clicks) before bolting to the engine. Forcing it will crack the internal oil pump gear, destroying the transmission.
  • Strict Fluid-Fill Procedure: No dipstick. Must check level via fill plug with vehicle level, engine running, and fluid temperature strictly between 86°F and 122°F (30°C to 50°C).
  • Thermal Bypass Valve (TBV) Contamination: Debris from a previous failure traps inside the TBV. You must replace the thermal bypass valve or install an aftermarket bypass block to prevent debris back-wash.
  • Single-Use Pan Bolts: Aluminum threads strip easily. Use new bolts, apply medium thread locker, and torque in a criss-cross pattern to exactly 10 N·m (89 in-lbs).
  • Torque Converter Bolt Access: On many Ram/Dodge applications, torque converter bolts are only accessible after removing the starter motor.

Easy to get right once you know them:

  • Reusing a contaminated thermal bypass valve, which releases trapped metal debris into the replacement unit.
  • Checking fluid level with the engine off, causing severe underfilling.
  • Skipping the TCM Quick Learn / adaptive shift reset, leading to harsh shifts or immediate clutch pack damage.
  • Ordering the eTorque (48V mild hybrid) version by mistake for a standard 12V non-eTorque truck.
  • Ordering a 2WD version for a 4x4 vehicle.
  • Improper torque converter installation resulting in a cracked front pump.

Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every transmission of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:

severeRear Driveshaft Fracture (Recall NHTSA 19V-324 / Safety Recall V48)2018–2019

🔎 Recommended at install: Inspect rear driveshaft's weld integrity and ensure this recall has been completed during transmission swap.

severeTransfer Case Stuck in Neutral (Recall NHTSA 19V-813 / Safety Recall W06)2019

🔎 Recommended at install: Ensure this safety recall has been addressed on your vehicle if mating your existing transfer case to this replacement transmission.

moderateTCM Flash Updates for Shift Quality (TSB 18-009-19 / TSB 21-025-21)2019–2020

Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 400-11059-5452096). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.

Policies, in plain English.

Shipping & Handling

  • Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
  • Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
  • The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
  • Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance

120-Day Warranty

This part includes a 120-day warranty.

  • If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
  • Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
  • Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation

Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.

Returns (30 Days)

We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.

  • Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
  • Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
  • Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
  • Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
  • Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited

Damaged in Shipping?

Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:

  • Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
  • Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
  • Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
  • Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery

We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.

Order Cancellation

Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
