Know This Transmission Before You Buy

The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this transmission family:

A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right transmission shows up:

  • Verify VIN indicates a 5th-generation 'New Style' Ram 1500 with 6-lug wheels.
  • Confirm presence of the 48V eTorque system (look for the large aluminum RAM-branded box on top of the engine).
  • Confirm 4x4 drivetrain with a transfer case.
  • Locate the transmission ID tag on the driver's side rear bottom of the case to confirm '8HP75' and option code 'DFR'.
🔎 Where to look: Stamped or engraved on the left-hand (driver's) side of the transmission case, in the rear bottom section, or on a barcode sticker on the side of the case.

What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:

5-9shop labor750-1500typical shop bill, on top of the partAdvanced to ExpertDIY difficulty

Special tools this job needs:

  • Transmission jack
  • E-Torx socket set
  • Long T40 Torx bit (5 to 6 inches)
  • 8mm hex socket (stubby or flexible)
  • Bidirectional OBD2 scan tool (AlfaOBD, Autel, or Mopar wiTECH)
  • Fluid transfer pump
  • Torque wrench
🔌 Wiring harness: The eTorque system has a unique wiring harness integration and calibration compared to standard 12V non-eTorque models.

Budget for these consumables at install:

  • ZF Lifeguard 8 or Mopar 8 & 9 Speed ATF (part numbers 68218925AA/AB, 68157995AA/AB)
  • Replacement plastic transmission pan assembly with integrated filter (Mopar 68225344AA or equivalent)
  • Torque converter seal (front pump/input shaft seal)
  • Rear output shaft seal
  • Cooler-line flush solvent

What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:

⚠️ Requiredprogramming / calibration⚠️ Yesdealer tool needed⚠️ YesECU/PCM re-marriage

What’s involved: TCM Adaptive Relearn (Quicklearn) and VIN-specific programming

sources differ: Arm 1 states TCM is integrated into the mechatronics unit and requires VIN-specific programming/flashing to match the truck's VIN/PCM; Arm 2 states TCM is a separate unit not included. Both agree a TCM adaptive relearn (Quicklearn) using a dealer-level scan tool (wiTECH, AlfaOBD, or Autel) is mandatory to prevent limp mode or harsh shifting.

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

  • Torque converter must be fully seated (clicking/dropping 3 times) before bolting to engine to avoid cracking the internal oil pump gear.
  • Exhaust Y-pipe blocks access to drain/fill plugs and pan bolts; must unbolt exhaust or lift transmission 2-3 inches.
  • Rear three pan bolts are obstructed by the crossmember and require a 5-6 inch long T40 Torx bit to prevent stripping.
  • Fluid level must be checked with engine running, vehicle level, and fluid temperature strictly between 30°C (86°F) and 50°C (122°F).
  • Factory plastic drain plug has a 10mm hex head that rounds out easily.
  • Plastic oil pan bolts have very low torque specs and must be tightened in sequence to prevent cracking.

Easy to get right once you know them:

  • Ordering for a non-eTorque (standard 12V) truck.
  • Ordering for a 2WD truck (which has a different tailhousing and output shaft).
  • Reusing the old plastic pan and contaminated integrated filter.
  • Using generic ATF or ATF+4 instead of ZF Lifeguard 8 / Mopar 8 & 9 Speed fluid.
  • Failing to perform the TCM adaptive Quicklearn reset before driving.
  • Failing to professionally flush the transmission cooler lines.

Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every transmission of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:

Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 400-11058-4272780). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.

Policies, in plain English.

Shipping & Handling

  • Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
  • Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
  • The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
  • Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance

120-Day Warranty

This part includes a 120-day warranty.

  • If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
  • Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
  • Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation

Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.

Returns (30 Days)

We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.

  • Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
  • Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
  • Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
  • Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
  • Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited

Damaged in Shipping?

Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:

  • Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
  • Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
  • Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
  • Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery

We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.

Order Cancellation

Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
