Know This Transmission Before You Buy
The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this transmission family:
A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right transmission shows up:
- Locate the white identification label on top of the current transmission bellhousing and confirm the code is TY751VB6CA.
- Confirm the vehicle is equipped with the 2.0L Turbocharged FA20DIT engine.
What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:
Special tools this job needs:
- T70 Torx Bit
- Transmission Jack
- Clutch Alignment Tool
- Engine Support Bar
- Extensions and swivels
Budget for these consumables at install:
- Manual Gear Oil: Subaru Extra MT (75W-80 GL-5) or high-quality API GL-5 compliant 75W-90 synthetic gear oil (approx. 3.5 US Quarts / 3.3 Liters)
- Clutch Kit (New clutch disc, pressure plate, and pilot bearing)
- Clutch Release (Throwout) Bearing (Updated OEM p/n 30502AA160)
- Rear Main Seal
- Axle Seals (Both front CV axle seals)
- Drain Plug Gasket (Aluminum or copper crush washer for T70 drain plug)
What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:
What’s involved: none
This is a conventional manual transmission with no Transmission Control Module (TCM) to program or marry to the VIN. If TSB 11-178-18 applies, a dealer reflash of the engine ECU (not the transmission) may be needed.
Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:
- The 'Snout' Wear Trap: Inspect the aluminum snout on the front of the transmission case for grooving. If worn, install a stainless steel snout repair sleeve kit (e.g., PDM USA TSK4) and matching oversized bearing.
- Loosen the Fill Plug First: Always loosen and remove the fill plug before draining the transmission fluid to ensure you can refill it.
- Axle Seal Protection: Be extremely careful not to nick or tear the delicate rubber lips of the new axle seals with the splines of the axle shaft during insertion.
- Clutch Fork and Pivot Point Lubrication: Clean and lubricate the clutch fork's pivot point inside the bellhousing with high-temperature grease to prevent squeaking.
- Bellhousing Dowels: Ensure alignment dowels are present and clean. Do not use bolts to pull the transmission to the engine.
Easy to get right once you know them:
- The 2015-2017 Final Drive Mismatch: Attempting to swap this 2018-2021 transmission (4.444 final drive) into a 2015-2017 vehicle (4.111 final drive) without changing the rear differential, which will destroy the center differential.
- Using the Wrong Drain Tool: Attempting to remove the transmission drain plug with an Allen key or T60 Torx instead of the mandatory T70 Torx bit, stripping the plug.
- Reusing the Old Clutch Kit or Throwout Bearing: Reusing worn components to save money, leading to premature failure and repeating the entire labor job.
- Buying a WRX Transmission for an STI: Confusing the TY75 series WRX transmission with the heavy-duty TY85 series STI transmission.
Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every transmission of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:
🔎 Recommended at install: Install a brand-new, updated OEM backup light switch before installing the transmission.
🔎 Recommended at install: Reprogram/reflash the Engine Control Module (ECM) diagnostic logic at a dealership.
🔎 Recommended at install: Replace the throwout bearing with the updated, heat-resistant OEM part (p/n 30502AA160) during installation.
🔎 Recommended at install: Upgrade clutch system components to improve durability under high-temperature or severe driving conditions.
🔎 Recommended at install: This is a factory engine tuning characteristic, not a mechanical failure.
Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 400-11033-5532334). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.
Policies, in plain English.
Shipping & Handling
- Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
- Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
- The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
- Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance
120-Day Warranty
This part includes a 120-day warranty.
- If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
- Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
- Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation
Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.
Returns (30 Days)
We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.
- Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
- Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
- Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
- Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
- Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited
Damaged in Shipping?
Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:
- Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
- Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
- Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
- Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery
We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.
Order Cancellation
Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
