Know This Transmission Before You Buy

The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this transmission family:

A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right transmission shows up:

  • Locate the metal identification plate on the underside of the current transmission case and confirm the three-letter code is TVC.
  • Check the white paper option sticker in the trunk's spare tire well or maintenance booklet to confirm the transmission code is TVC.
  • Confirm the vehicle is a 2018-2020 Audi SQ5 equipped with the 3.0L Turbocharged V6 engine.
🔎 Where to look: The three-letter transmission code (TVC) is stamped on a metal identification plate on the underside of the transmission case near the oil pan, and is also listed on the vehicle data sticker.

What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:

8 to 14 hoursshop labor$1,200 - $2,600typical shop bill, on top of the partExpertDIY difficulty

Special tools this job needs:

  • Audi-compatible diagnostic scan tool (ODIS with online GeKo access, or VCDS)
  • Heavy-duty transmission jack
  • Engine support bar / subframe support fixtures
  • Crankshaft counterhold tool (Audi T40263) and adapter (T40314)
  • Fluid fill pump with hook-style adapter
🔌 Wiring harness: Wiring harnesses differ between vehicle models; ensure the unit is sourced from/for the exact SQ5 application to prevent pinout mismatches.

Budget for these consumables at install:

  • ZF LifeguardFluid 8 (VAG specification G 060 162 A2)
  • Brand-new plastic oil pan assembly with integrated filter (VAG part number 0D5 398 009 C or equivalent) and new pan bolts
  • Input shaft/torque converter seal
  • High-pressure transmission cooler-line flush
  • Auxiliary fluids (front differential gear oil Castrol BOT851L / VAG G 052 190 D0 and transfer case gear oil if drained)

What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:

⚠️ Requiredprogramming / calibration⚠️ Yesdealer tool needed⚠️ YesECU/PCM re-marriage

What’s involved: Component Protection (Anti-Theft Immobilizer Re-marriage) and TCM Adaptive Relearn (Quick Learn)

Audi utilizes an anti-theft system called Component Protection on the internal TCM. The vehicle must be connected to Audi's official factory diagnostic system (ODIS) with an active, authorized online connection to Audi's corporate servers (GeKo access) to unlock the unit.

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

  • Torque Converter Seating: Ensure the torque converter is fully and deeply seated (two or three distinct drops) before bolting to the engine to avoid cracking the internal oil pump gears.
  • Three Separate Oil Chambers: Do not mix up the fill/drain plugs or fluids for the ATF, transfer case, and front differential chambers.
  • Strict Fluid Fill Temperature Procedure: Fluid level must be checked with the vehicle level, engine idling, and ATF temperature strictly between 30°C and 50°C using a diagnostic scan tool.
  • Coolant Line Alignment: Pay close attention to cooler lines and brackets to prevent metal lines from rubbing against the subframe or transmission case.

Easy to get right once you know them:

  • Assuming the transmission is defective when it is actually locked in safe/limp mode due to Component Protection.
  • Using generic or multi-vehicle ATF instead of the specified ZF LifeguardFluid 8 / G 060 162 A2.
  • Checking the fluid level with the engine turned off, causing fluid to pour out and leave the unit underfilled.
  • Reusing the old plastic oil pan and integrated filter, which can contaminate the replacement unit.
  • Ordering a transmission without verifying the TVC code on the existing unit.

Policies, in plain English.

Shipping & Handling

  • Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
  • Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
  • The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
  • Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance

120-Day Warranty

This part includes a 120-day warranty.

  • If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
  • Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
  • Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation

Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.

Returns (30 Days)

We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.

  • Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
  • Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
  • Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
  • Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
  • Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited

Damaged in Shipping?

Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:

  • Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
  • Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
  • Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
  • Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery

We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.

Order Cancellation

Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
