Know This Transmission Before You Buy

The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this transmission family:

A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right transmission shows up:

  • Verify the Transmission ID Tag: Confirm the white barcode sticker on top of the transmission case reads 'BRHA'.
  • Verify the VIN 5th and 6th Digits: Must be 'RW1' (FWD 1.5L Turbo). 'RW2' indicates AWD; 'RW5' or 'RW6' indicates 2.4L engine.
  • Verify the Engine Type: Confirm the vehicle has the 1.5L Turbocharged engine (L15BE).
  • Check Fluid Type: Locate the transmission fluid fill plug cap and confirm it is marked 'HCF-2'.
🔎 Where to look: White barcode sticker/label located on the top/side of the transmission case, typically visible looking down into the engine bay on the driver's side near the starter motor.

What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:

Special tools this job needs:

  • Engine support bar/hanger
  • Subframe jack/cradle
  • Torque wrench
  • Bidirectional scan tool (Honda i-HDS or equivalent)
🔌 Wiring harness: The original Transmission Control Module (TCM) from the vehicle must be unbolted from the old transmission and installed onto the replacement unit for electronic compatibility.

Budget for these consumables at install:

  • Honda HCF-2 Continuously Variable Transmission Fluid ONLY (approx. 8.0 quarts for dry fill)
  • CVT Warmer Filter (Cartridge Filter) - Part # 25450-P4V-013
  • Internal Pan Strainer/Filter - Part # 25420-5LJ-003
  • Transmission Pan Gasket - Part # 21814-RJ2-003
  • Drain Plug Crush Washer (18mm) - Part # 90471-PX4-000
  • Level Check Bolt Crush Washer - Part # 90471-59C-000
  • Torque Converter Input Shaft Seal / Axle Seals
  • Aerosol Transmission Cooler Line Flush (e.g., Lubegard Kooler Kleen)

What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:

What’s involved: TCM Adaptive Relearn / CVT Start Clutch Calibration

Clear old adaptive memory stored in the PCM/TCM and perform a CVT Start Clutch Pressure Control Calibration. While some manual key/pedal sequences exist, a professional-grade scan tool (Honda i-HDS or equivalent) is highly recommended to prevent harsh shifting, slipping, or permanent start clutch damage.

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

  • Torque Converter Seating: Must click and drop backward three distinct times to fully engage internal oil pump gears. Failure to seat fully will crack the internal oil pump upon bolting the bellhousing.
  • TCM Swap: Original TCM must be transferred from the old transmission to the replacement unit.
  • Strict Fluid Level Check Procedure: Must check with engine running and vehicle level. Fill, warm up engine, cycle gears, remove level check bolt on front of case, and add fluid until it slows to a light drip. Checking with engine off causes severe underfilling.
  • Cooler Line Flush: Mandatory to clear out metal shavings and debris from the previous failure to prevent immediate contamination of the new valve body.

Easy to get right once you know them:

  • Using Non-OEM Fluid: Using universal CVT fluid or standard ATF instead of genuine Honda HCF-2 leads to immediate vibration, slipping, and belt failure.
  • Skipping the Start Clutch Calibration: Driving immediately without calibration causes harsh engagement and premature wear.
  • Failing to Flush the Cooler Lines: Reintroducing trapped metal shavings from the old failed unit into the replacement transmission.
  • Checking Fluid with the Engine Off: Results in severe underfilling by 1.5 to 2 quarts, causing immediate slipping and belt damage.

Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every transmission of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:

moderateCVT Low-Speed Shudder / Judder2015-2018

🔎 Recommended at install: Complete transmission fluid flush using genuine HCF-2 fluid and a software update to recalibrate the transmission control logic (TSB 15-086 / TSB 17-050).

severeHigh-Temperature Limp Mode2017-2019

🔎 Recommended at install: Ensure transmission cooler lines are completely flushed and free of debris during installation. Always use fresh, genuine Honda HCF-2 fluid.

minorEngine Oil Dilution Software Update (TCU)2017-2019

🔎 Recommended at install: Apply software updates affecting both the engine (PGM-FI) and transmission (TCU) control units to help the engine warm up faster.

Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 400-10378-4645507). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.

Policies, in plain English.

Shipping & Handling

  • Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
  • Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
  • The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
  • Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance

120-Day Warranty

This part includes a 120-day warranty.

  • If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
  • Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
  • Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation

Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.

Returns (30 Days)

We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.

  • Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
  • Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
  • Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
  • Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
  • Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited

Damaged in Shipping?

Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:

  • Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
  • Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
  • Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
  • Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery

We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.

Order Cancellation

Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
