Know This Transmission Before You Buy
The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this transmission family:
A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right transmission shows up:
- Verify the 8th digit of the VIN is 'G' (confirming the 3.6L Pentastar V6 engine).
- Confirm the vehicle is All-Wheel Drive (AWD) by checking for a rear differential, driveshaft, and rear axle shafts.
- Locate the barcode sticker on the top right side of the transmission case and verify it displays '948TE' or '9HP48'.
What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:
Special tools this job needs:
- wiTECH Diagnostic Scan Tool (or high-end bi-directional scan tool)
- Mopar Transmission Dipstick Tool (P/N 10323A)
- Digital Thermometer / OBD Scanner
- Engine Support Fixture
- Transmission Jack
- Fluid pump/syringe
Budget for these consumables at install:
- Mopar ZF 8 & 9 Speed ATF (P/N 68218925AA) or ZF LifeguardFluid 9 (Do NOT use ATF+4)
- Left and right axle shaft seals
- Torque converter input shaft seal
- PTU-to-transmission mating seals
- Professional transmission cooler line flush agent
What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:
What’s involved: TCM Adaptive Relearn (Quick Learn) and VIN-specific programming / PROXI Alignment
The TCM is internal to the transmission and is married to the original vehicle's VIN. A dealer-level scan tool (wiTECH) is required to program the replacement TCM with the buyer's VIN, perform a PROXI alignment, and execute the mandatory Quick Learn adaptive relearn procedure. Skipping this will result in a no-start, failure to shift out of park, or immediate limp mode.
Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:
- Torque Converter Seating: Ensure the torque converter is fully seated (typically three clicks/stages) onto the oil pump splines before bolting to the engine. Failure to do so will crack the pump gear and instantly destroy the transmission.
- AWD PTU Spline Lubrication: Clean and apply high-temperature, water-resistant spline grease to the PTU mating splines.
- Strict Fluid Level Check: No traditional dipstick is present. Fluid level must be checked via the check port using tool 10323A at a highly specific operating temperature monitored via scan tool.
- Subframe Alignment: Mark the front subframe alignment before lowering to prevent steering wheel misalignment.
- Mandatory Adaptive Relearn: The vehicle will not shift correctly or may trigger immediate gear ratio error codes if driven before performing the Quick Learn routine.
Easy to get right once you know them:
- Using incorrect fluid (such as standard Mopar ATF+4 instead of the specialized green Mopar ZF 8 & 9 Speed ATF).
- Skipping the mandatory Quick Learn calibration procedure.
- Reusing a contaminated transmission cooler or skipping the professional line flush.
- Attempting to install a FWD transmission into an AWD vehicle.
- Attempting to service the internal transmission filter, which is non-serviceable without splitting the case.
Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every transmission of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:
🔎 Recommended at install: NHTSA Recall 16V529000 / FCA Recall S55. Software update to monitor the circuit or replacement of the sensor cluster harness. Ensure recipient vehicle PCM/TCM is flashed to the latest software version.
🔎 Recommended at install: Perform complete Quick Learn and Adaptive Relearn procedures with a dealer-level scan tool. Apply latest software updates (e.g., TSB 21-013-16 Rev. B, 21-015-16, 21-002-16, 21-003-16).
🔎 Recommended at install: A bolt securing a hydraulic pressure valve on the main shaft can loosen or break, leading to loss of oil pressure and slipping.
🔎 Recommended at install: Hydraulically actuated dog clutches can fail or trigger fault codes like P0810, causing a stuck-in-Park condition.

Policies, in plain English.
Shipping & Handling
- Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
- Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
- The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
- Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance
120-Day Warranty
This part includes a 120-day warranty.
- If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
- Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
- Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation
Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.
Returns (30 Days)
We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.
- Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
- Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
- Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
- Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
- Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited
Damaged in Shipping?
Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:
- Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
- Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
- Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
- Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery
We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.
Order Cancellation
Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
