Know This Transmission Before You Buy
The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this transmission family:
A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right transmission shows up:
- Confirm engine is the 2.4L 4-cylinder Tigershark (VIN 8th digit 'B'), not the 3.6L V6.
- Confirm vehicle is Front-Wheel Drive (FWD), not AWD.
- Locate the barcode label/ID tag on the side of the transmission case (under the shifter cable bracket) to verify the 948TE designation / sales code DFH.
What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:
Special tools this job needs:
- Engine support bar/fixture
- Transmission jack
- Mopar Dipstick Tool 10323A or 10323B
- Advanced OBD2 scan tool (Chrysler wiTECH or equivalent)
- Fluid pump
Budget for these consumables at install:
- Mopar ZF 8 & 9 Speed ATF (P/N 68157995AB / 68218925AB) or ZF LifeguardFluid 9
- Torque converter seal (impeller seal, P/N 4752960AA)
- Axle seals (differential seals, P/N 4736843AA)
- Transmission cooler flush solvent
What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:
What’s involved: TCM Adaptive Relearn / Quick Learn procedure
The 948TE uses highly sophisticated adaptive memory cells. When a replacement transmission is installed, these adaptations must be reset to zero using a dealer-level scan tool (wiTECH or equivalent) after the transmission has reached operating temperature. Skipping this step will result in poor performance, harsh shifting, and potential damage to the dog clutches.
Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:
- Internal Filter Trap: The transmission filter is internal and cannot be serviced without splitting the case halves. Do not attempt to open the case.
- Torque Converter Seating: Ensure the torque converter is fully seated onto the transmission pump before bolting to the engine. If not fully seated, bolting the bellhousing tight will crack the front pump, destroying the transmission instantly.
- Fluid Level Check Procedure: There is no dipstick. Fluid level must be checked via a plug on the case using Mopar Tool 10323A/B with the engine running at idle in Park, strictly at operating temperature (sources cite 37-45C / 99-113F or 60C / 140F depending on procedure).
- Mandatory Cooler Flush: You must perform a professional cooler-line flush to clear out metal shavings or debris from the old failed unit to prevent immediate contamination.
- Dog Clutch Sensitivity: The 948TE uses hydraulically actuated dog clutches that are extremely sensitive to fluid level, fluid type, and adaptation calibration.
Easy to get right once you know them:
- Using the Wrong Fluid: Assuming standard Mopar ATF+4 can be used. This transmission strictly requires Mopar ZF 8 & 9 Speed ATF / ZF Lifeguard 9.
- Skipping the Quick Learn: Driving the vehicle immediately without performing the scan-tool-based adaptive relearn, causing violent shifting or limp mode.
- Misdiagnosing the 'Service Shifter' Message: Replacing the transmission when the issue is actually a failed shifter bezel wiring harness or shifter assembly (TSB 08-054-18 REV A).
- Assuming All 9-Speeds are the Same: Ordering a 9-speed transmission from a Jeep Cherokee or a 3.6L Chrysler 200 assuming they are interchangeable.
- Breaking the Front Pump: Forcing the bellhousing to mate with the engine when the torque converter is not fully seated.
- Misdiagnosing failed engine or transmission mounts as internal transmission faults.

Policies, in plain English.
Shipping & Handling
- Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
- Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
- The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
- Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance
120-Day Warranty
This part includes a 120-day warranty.
- If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
- Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
- Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation
Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.
Returns (30 Days)
We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.
- Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
- Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
- Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
- Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
- Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited
Damaged in Shipping?
Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:
- Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
- Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
- Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
- Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery
We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.
Order Cancellation
Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
