Know This Transmission Before You Buy

The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this transmission family:

A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right transmission shows up:

  • Check your VIN's 8th digit: Confirm that the 8th digit is 3 (designates the 3.6L LFX V6 engine).
  • Verify your drivetrain: Confirm you have a front driveshaft and a transfer case bolted directly to the rear of your transmission.
  • Locate your transmission RPO code: Confirm the code MYB is on the silver Service Parts Identification sticker in the glove box.
🔎 Where to look: Verify your transmission tag ID: Confirm the barcode sticker on the driver's side of your current transmission case displays the 4-character code 5BTA.

What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:

6 to 12 hoursshop labor$900 to $2,000+typical shop bill, on top of the partAdvanced / ExpertDIY difficulty

Special tools this job needs:

  • Heavy-duty transmission jack
  • Engine support fixture or heavy-duty jack stands
  • Transmission cooler line flush equipment
  • GM-compatible J2534 pass-through programming tool or dealer-level scan tool (such as GM MDI)
  • Specialized fluid pump or fill tool
🔌 Wiring harness: Inspect the vehicle's wiring harness carefully during the swap, as some owners have traced persistent shifting problems to chafed wires in the transmission wiring harness.

Budget for these consumables at install:

  • Dexron VI (6) Automatic Transmission Fluid (Mobil 1 Synthetic LV ATF HP Blue Label highly recommended)
  • New transmission filter and pan gasket
  • New torque converter/front pump seal
  • Two new GM output shaft O-rings (Part # 24251228)
  • High-temperature wheel bearing grease
  • Transmission line flush solvent

What’s involved: VIN-Specific TCM Programming & Adaptive Relearn

The 6L50 uses an internal Transmission Control Module (TCM). Because this is a used unit, the TCM is currently programmed to the donor truck's VIN. You must have a professional reprogram the TCM to match your truck's VIN using GM's Service Programming System (SPS). Additionally, your mechanic must perform a TCM Adaptive Relearn using a compatible scan tool to reset shift pressure parameters.

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

  • Torque Converter Seating (Critical): Must drop back into the case three distinct times (three 'clicks') during rotation. If not fully seated, bolting the transmission to the engine will crush and crack the internal pump rotor.
  • Fluid Level Check Procedure (No Dipstick): Must be checked via a standpipe in the bottom of the pan with the engine running and fluid temperature between 86°F to 122°F (30°C to 50°C).
  • Output Shaft Greasing: Clean splines, install updated O-rings, and apply a liberal coat of high-temperature grease to prevent moisture from seizing or stripping the splines.
  • Cooler Flush is Critical: Failing to flush the cooler lines is a leading cause of repeat failures.

Easy to get right once you know them:

  • Ordering for the Wrong Engine: Buying a 6-speed transmission from a 2.5L 4-cylinder or 2.8L diesel Colorado, which have different bellhousing patterns and internal calibrations.
  • Ordering a 2WD Transmission for a 4x4 Truck: 2WD versions have a much longer output shaft and cannot be bolted to a 4x4 transfer case without a complete teardown.
  • Driving Before Programming: Attempting to drive immediately without programming the TCM to the VIN, which triggers immediate limp-mode codes and can burn up internal clutches.
  • Checking Fluid with the Engine Off: Removing the fluid level check plug while the engine is off will cause several quarts of fluid to pour out, leaving the transmission severely underfilled.

Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every transmission of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:

moderateTorque Converter Clutch (TCC) Shudder / Chuggle2015–2016

🔎 Recommended at install: Complete transmission fluid exchange with Mobil 1 Synthetic LV ATF HP (Blue Label) fluid. If the condition has persisted, torque converter replacement or valve body upgrade kit (like the Sonnax Zip Kit) may be necessary.

severeTEHCM / Solenoid Performance Faults2015-2016

🔎 Recommended at install: Replace or service the internal TEHCM module if solenoid performance codes (P0751, P0776, P0965, P2714) persist.

severeOutput Shaft Spline Corrosion & Stripping2015-2016

🔎 Recommended at install: Install two new GM output shaft O-rings (Part # 24251228) and apply high-temperature wheel bearing grease to the splines.

Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 400-05178-5552433). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.

Policies, in plain English.

Shipping & Handling

  • Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
  • Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
  • The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
  • Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance

120-Day Warranty

This part includes a 120-day warranty.

  • If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
  • Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
  • Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation

Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.

Returns (30 Days)

We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.

  • Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
  • Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
  • Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
  • Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
  • Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited

Damaged in Shipping?

Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:

  • Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
  • Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
  • Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
  • Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery

We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.

Order Cancellation

Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
