Know This Engine Before You Buy

The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this engine family:

A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right engine shows up:

  • Verify the 5th digit of the VIN is '3'.
  • Verify the engine code is 'CTGF'.
  • Confirm the vehicle is an AWD Quattro model.
  • Confirm original turbochargers are in good, reusable condition or plan to purchase new ones.
🔎 Where to look: The engine code is printed on a white paper barcode label on the cylinder head cover or timing cover, and stamped directly onto the engine block on the front-left side near the crank pulley.

What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:

20 to 30 hoursshop labor$3,000 to $7,500typical shop bill, on top of the partExpertDIY difficulty

Special tools this job needs:

  • Camshaft Timing Tool Kit (OEM T40264 / Baum Tools BT40264)
  • High-Pressure Fuel Pump Tool (034-106-Z058)
  • Coolant Refill/Air Purge Tool (Schwaben ES#2712734 or equivalent vacuum filler)
  • Triple Square (XZN) Sockets (M10, M12, M14)
  • Engine support brace
  • Crankshaft turning tools (T40272)
🔌 Wiring harness: You must reuse your vehicle's original engine wiring harness. Ensure all pins are clean and free of oil/coolant intrusion.

Budget for these consumables at install:

  • Engine Oil (VW 502 00 or VW 504 00 approved full-synthetic 5W-40 or 0W-30, 9.2 quarts / 8.7 liters)
  • Engine Oil Filter (Part No. 079115561J or equivalent)
  • Engine Coolant (G13 pink spec coolant, diluted 50/50 with distilled water)
  • Spark Plugs (OE-spec double platinum or iridium)
  • Intake manifold gaskets and intercooler seals
  • Valve cover gaskets
  • High-pressure fuel pump O-rings
  • Exhaust manifold gaskets and turbocharger mounting gaskets/seals
  • Turbocharger Oil Strainer (079115175G) & Check Valve (079103175C)
  • PCV Valve / Oil Separator (079103542E)

What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:

⚠️ Requiredprogramming / calibration⚠️ Yesdealer tool needed⚠️ YesECU/PCM re-marriage

What’s involved: Immobilizer / Component Protection and Fuel Injector Coding

If swapping the donor ECU, you will trigger Audi's Component Protection and Immobilizer (Immo 5) systems. If using the fuel injectors that come with the replacement engine, you must program their specific calibration codes (IMA codes) into your original ECU using ODIS with an active GeKo online connection.

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

  • The 'Hot Vee' Heat Trap: Plastic vacuum lines, coolant hoses, and wiring harnesses in the valley become incredibly brittle due to extreme heat. Be extremely gentle or replace them.
  • Vacuum System Contamination: Leaking water pumps can allow coolant to be sucked into the vacuum system, ruining wastegate actuators. Inspect original vacuum lines for pink crust.
  • Torque-to-Yield (TTY) Bolts: Engine mount bolts, flywheel/flexplate bolts, and harmonic balancer bolts are one-time-use stretch bolts and must be replaced.
  • Intercooler Bleeding: The water-to-air intercooler has its own dedicated cooling circuit. You must use a vacuum coolant refilling tool to prevent airlocks.
  • Priming the Turbo Oil System: Before the first start, disable fuel or ignition and crank the engine to prime the oil system and ensure immediate turbo lubrication.

Easy to get right once you know them:

  • Reusing the Old Oil Screen: Failing to replace the oil screen in the valley will instantly starve transferred or new turbos of oil, destroying them within minutes.
  • Mixing Up Engine Codes: Assuming any Audi 4.0T engine (like CEUC or CGTA) will work. You must verify the CTGF engine code and VIN 5th digit of 3.
  • Failing to Code Injectors: Not programming the new engine's injector flow adjustment (IMA) codes into your ECU, leading to rough idling, misfires, or melted pistons.
  • Not Replacing the PCV/Oil Separator: Reusing an old PCV valve with a torn diaphragm, causing immediate vacuum leaks, whistling, and high oil consumption.
  • Underestimating the Labor: Not budgeting for the high installation and programming costs, which can easily double the price of the engine itself.

Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every engine of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:

severeNHTSA Safety Recall 21H7 (Campaign 22V178) — Turbocharger Oil Strainer Blockage2013–2017

🔎 Recommended at install: Replace the oil strainer with an optimized version (part number 079115175G, featuring a larger 90 µm mesh instead of the original 30 µm mesh) and replace the check valve (079103175C).

moderateCrankcase Ventilation (PCV) Valve / Oil Separator Failure (Warranty Extension U38 / TSB 2046724/5)2013–2018

🔎 Recommended at install: Replace the crankcase breather module (oil separator/PCV valve, part number 079103542E) with a brand-new revised version.

moderateActive Engine Mount Failure2013–2018

🔎 Recommended at install: Replace both active, fluid-filled electronic engine mounts during the swap.

minorCarbon Buildup on Intake Valves2013–2018

🔎 Recommended at install: Perform carbon cleaning of the intake valves while the engine is out.

Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 300-76048-2345932). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.

Policies, in plain English.

Shipping & Handling

  • Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
  • Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
  • The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
  • Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance

120-Day Warranty

This part includes a 120-day warranty.

  • If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
  • Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
  • Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation

Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.

Returns (30 Days)

We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.

  • Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
  • Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
  • Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
  • Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
  • Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited

Damaged in Shipping?

Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:

  • Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
  • Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
  • Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
  • Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery

We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.

Order Cancellation

Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
