Know This Engine Before You Buy

The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this engine family:

A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right engine shows up:

  • Confirm the 8th digit of the VIN is 'N'.
  • Verify the vehicle is a conventional gasoline model and NOT a 4xe Plug-In Hybrid (which has a charging port on the driver's fender).
  • Confirm the vehicle has an 8-speed automatic transmission (850RE).
🔎 Where to look: The 8th digit of the VIN must be 'N'. The engine code 'GME-T4' is printed on a barcode label on the timing cover and stamped on the block near the oil filter housing.

What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:

10 to 20 hoursshop labor1440 to 3000typical shop bill, on top of the partExpertDIY difficulty

Special tools this job needs:

  • wiTECH 2.0 Diagnostic Scan Tool
  • Engine Timing Tool Kit for Jeep 2.0T
  • Oil Seal Installer 9506
  • High-Pressure Fuel Line Disconnect Tool
  • Precision Torque Wrench
  • Engine hoist and stand
🔌 Wiring harness: The engine wiring harness is highly specific. You must reuse your vehicle's original engine wiring harness to ensure proper pinouts and CAN bus module communication.

Budget for these consumables at install:

  • SAE 5W-30 Full Synthetic Engine Oil (meeting FCA MS-13340 or API SP / GF-6A)
  • Mopar 04892339BE Oil Filter
  • Mopar OAT Coolant meeting FCA MS-12106 (purple)
  • NGK 90219 Laser Iridium Spark Plugs (ILZKR7G7G)
  • Intake and exhaust manifold gaskets
  • Turbocharger oil/coolant line O-rings and crush washers
  • Front and rear main seals

What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:

⚠️ Requiredprogramming / calibration⚠️ Yesdealer tool needed⚠️ YesECU/PCM re-marriage

What’s involved: Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor Relearn, Throttle Body Relearn, and PCM Security Re-marriage

Sources differ on PCM security re-marriage: Arm 1 states no security re-marriage is needed if reusing the original PCM (only CKP/throttle relearns), while Arm 2 states the PCM must be re-married/synchronized with the new engine's sensors due to Chrysler's locked PCM architecture. Cautiously flagged as requiring programming/re-marriage; a dealer-level scan tool (wiTECH 2.0) is required.

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

  • Brittle Plastic Coolant T-Fitting (Part 68280784AB) near the turbocharger should be proactively replaced with an aftermarket billet aluminum version.
  • The buried Oil-Air Separator (Mopar 4893609AD) under the intake manifold is prone to leaks and should have its seal replaced and bolts torqued while the engine is out.
  • Rear main seal leaks are common; inspect and replace using specialized tool 9506 before mating to the transmission.
  • Water pump inlet tube fasteners are known to back out from vibration and should be checked/re-torqued.
  • Be extremely careful with the ground strap on the PCM mounting bolts to avoid difficult-to-diagnose electrical issues.

Easy to get right once you know them:

  • Mixing OAT (purple) coolant with HOAT (orange/pink) or generic green coolant, which creates a clogging gel sludge.
  • Stripping the aluminum oil pan drain plug by exceeding the strict 20 ft-lbs torque specification.
  • Using incorrect 0W-20 oil viscosity instead of the required 5W-30.
  • Reusing stretched Torque-to-Yield (TTY) fasteners on the exhaust manifold, turbocharger, or engine mounts.
  • Ignoring the 8th VIN digit (N) and accidentally ordering a 4xe hybrid (ECX) or other incompatible variant.
  • Underestimating the PCM lock and failing to arrange for necessary programming/relearns post-install.

Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 300-10961-5558601). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.

Policies, in plain English.

Shipping & Handling

  • Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
  • Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
  • The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
  • Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance

120-Day Warranty

This part includes a 120-day warranty.

  • If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
  • Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
  • Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation

Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.

Returns (30 Days)

We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.

  • Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
  • Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
  • Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
  • Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
  • Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited

Damaged in Shipping?

Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:

  • Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
  • Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
  • Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
  • Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery

We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.

Order Cancellation

Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
