Know This Engine Before You Buy
The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this engine family:
A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right engine shows up:
- Confirm your vehicle is equipped with the E-Four (AWD) system.
- Confirm your vehicle's VIN 5th digit: 'A' or 'B' for 2025 Camry; 'C' or 'D' for 2023-2025 Corolla; 'B' for 2023-2025 Corolla Cross; 'D' for 2023-2025 Prius.
- Physically inspect your rear electric motor housing and match the OEM part number to G105028040 or G105028041.
- Verify the Fluid Spec on the fill plug or owner's manual specifies e-Transaxle Fluid TE.
What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:
Special tools this job needs:
- Class 0 rated insulated gloves (rated for 1,000V AC / 1,500V DC) with leather outer protectors
- CAT III / CAT IV Digital Multimeter
- Toyota Techstream Diagnostic Scan Tool (or equivalent professional-grade bi-directional scanner)
- HV Service Plug Puller
- Fluid Pump
- Torque Wrench
Budget for these consumables at install:
- Toyota Genuine e-Transaxle Fluid TE (P/N 08886-81986 or 08886-02605) - approx 1.2 liters
- New Drain and Fill Plug Gaskets/Washers (Toyota OEM crush washers)
- New Axle Shaft Seals
- High-Voltage Connector O-Rings / Seals
What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:
What’s involved: Resolver Calibration / Angle Sensor Calibration
The rear electric motor contains a resolver (rotary sensor) that tells the hybrid vehicle's inverter the exact position and speed of the motor's rotor. When replacing the rear motor assembly, you must perform a Resolver Calibration using a Toyota Techstream scan tool (or equivalent professional diagnostic tool) so the inverter can properly synchronize with the new motor. Sources differ on whether this is strictly required for a complete assembly swap, but it is highly recommended to ensure proper operation and clear high-voltage system codes.
Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:
- HIGH-VOLTAGE DANGER: You must pull the high-voltage service plug and wait at least 10 minutes for the high-voltage capacitors to discharge. Use a CAT III/IV multimeter to verify zero voltage at the rear motor terminal block before disconnecting the orange high-voltage cables.
- The 'e-Transaxle Fluid TE' Viscosity Trap: Do not assume this unit uses standard Toyota ATF WS. Toyota transitioned to the thinner 'TE' fluid for 5th-generation hybrid systems. Putting the wrong fluid in will destroy the internal bearings and gears.
- Resolver Connector Fragility: The low-voltage resolver connector on the motor housing is made of plastic and is highly fragile. Be extremely careful when unplugging or plugging it in.
- Slow-Fill Requirement: When filling the eAxle with fluid, you must add it slowly to prevent false indications of being full.
- Do Not Roll the Vehicle: Once the high-voltage system is disabled, the vehicle should not be rolled on its wheels, as this can cause the electric motors to generate voltage.
Easy to get right once you know them:
- Ordering for the Wrong Drivetrain (FWD vs. AWD): You cannot install this rear electric motor in a Front-Wheel Drive (FWD) hybrid vehicle.
- Using the Wrong Fluid (ATF WS vs. TE): Filling the 2023+ hybrid transaxles with older Toyota ATF WS fluid leads to rapid transmission/motor failure.
- Neglecting the Resolver Calibration: Assuming this is a simple 'plug-and-play' mechanical swap without performing the necessary scan tool calibrations.
- Damaging the High-Voltage Cable Connector: Forcing the high-voltage orange cable connector onto the motor terminal block can bend the internal pins.
- Contaminating the HV Connection: Allowing dirt, dust, or moisture to get into the high-voltage electrical connection during installation.
Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every engine of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:
🔎 Recommended at install: Inspect the high-voltage cable connector for any signs of corrosion or moisture ingress during installation. 2023+ models feature a redesigned connector housing with a proper drain hole or rubber sleeve to mitigate this.
🔎 Recommended at install: Ensure only Toyota Genuine e-Transaxle Fluid TE is used. Do not use ATF WS or aftermarket CVT fluids.
🔎 Recommended at install: Inspect rear motor mounts for cracking or damage prior to installation.
Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 300-10816-5532022). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.
Policies, in plain English.
Shipping & Handling
- Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
- Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
- The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
- Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance
120-Day Warranty
This part includes a 120-day warranty.
- If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
- Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
- Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation
Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.
Returns (30 Days)
We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.
- Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
- Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
- Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
- Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
- Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited
Damaged in Shipping?
Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:
- Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
- Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
- Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
- Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery
We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.
Order Cancellation
Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
