Know This Engine Before You Buy
The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this engine family:
A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right engine shows up:
- Check your VIN's 8th digit: Look at the public VIN plate on your dashboard or driver's door jamb. The 8th digit of your VIN must be H.
- Verify your transmission type: Confirm whether your Veloster N is a 6-speed manual or an 8-speed DCT. If you have a DCT, remember that you must transfer your original flexplate and wiring harness to this manual-spec donor engine.
- Locate the engine code: Check the white barcode label on your original valve cover. It must read G4KH.
- Verify your model: Ensure you own a Veloster N. This engine will not fit a standard Veloster or a Veloster with the 'Turbo' trim level.
What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:
Special tools this job needs:
- Engine hoist/crane with load leveler
- Heavy-duty engine stand
- Flywheel locking tool
- High-accuracy digital torque wrench
- Fuel line pressure release tool or compatible scan tool
- Metric socket set
- Coolant funnel system
Budget for these consumables at install:
- Engine Oil (5.8 quarts of high-quality full synthetic 5W-30 or 0W-30 oil meeting API SN Plus or SP specifications)
- Genuine OEM Hyundai oil filter (Part #26300-35505)
- Ethylene glycol-based, phosphate-free coolant (Hyundai/Kia Pink or Green Long Life Coolant) mixed 50/50 with distilled water
- Set of 4 high-performance Iridium spark plugs (OEM Part #18857-09085), gapped precisely to 0.028" - 0.030"
- Intake manifold gasket (Part #28411-2GTB0)
- Exhaust manifold / turbocharger gasket and lock nuts
- High-pressure fuel pump O-ring (Part #35312-2G700) and high-pressure fuel pipe
- Front and rear crankshaft main seals
- Flywheel / Flexplate Bolts (Torque-to-yield fasteners)
- Single-use crush washers for oil drain plug and banjo bolts
What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:
What’s involved: Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKP) Relearn, Knock Sensor (KSDS) Calibration Reset, and ECU Software Update / Immobilizer Re-marriage
While the engine will physically start and run on your original ECU without a security re-marriage, you must perform a CKP relearn and reset the knock sensor adaptive values using a dealer-level diagnostic tool (such as Hyundai GDS). Failing to perform these calibrations can result in immediate false misfire codes, rough running, or a false limp-home mode trigger (DTC P1326). Immobilizer link may also need to be re-established.
Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:
- The Single-Use High-Pressure Fuel Pipe: The metal fuel line running from the high-pressure fuel pump (HPFP) to the fuel rail utilizes a single-use crush-flare design. Once loosened, it cannot be safely retorqued. Reusing this pipe is a major fire hazard.
- Front-Clip Removal Method: The engine bay is extremely tight. The easiest and cleanest method is to remove the front bumper, headlights, radiator, and intercooler assembly, then slide the engine straight out of the front of the vehicle.
- Manual Transmission (MT) vs. Dual-Clutch Transmission (DCT) Mating: This donor engine is configured for a manual transmission. If your vehicle is equipped with the 8-speed wet dual-clutch transmission (N-DCT), you must remove the manual dual-mass flywheel and install your original DCT flexplate/drive plate.
- Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKP) Fragility: The CKP sensor is located in a highly vulnerable spot near the starter motor. It is very easy to accidentally strike and crack this sensor when mating the transmission to the engine block.
- Accessory and Harness Swap: You must transfer all accessories (alternator, A/C, etc.) and the complete engine wiring harness from your old engine. Plastic connectors can become brittle with age.
- ECU Location and Removal: The ECU is located near the battery tray. You will need to disconnect and remove it to get the tray out and access other components.
- Exhaust Manifold Bolts: These bolts are frequently cited as being extremely difficult to access and are often rusted.
- Coolant Filling: The Veloster N does not have a traditional radiator cap. Coolant is filled through the reservoir tank. Using a spill-proof funnel is highly recommended to properly bleed the air out of the system.
Easy to get right once you know them:
- Ordering for a Non-N Veloster: Purchasing this engine for a base-model 2.0L Veloster (Nu G4NH) or Veloster Turbo (1.6L G4FJ). They share absolutely no structural, mechanical, or electrical compatibility.
- Reusing the High-Pressure Fuel Pipe: Attempting to save money by reusing the old high-pressure fuel line almost always results in a high-pressure fuel leak and fire hazard.
- Reusing Torque-to-Yield Flywheel Bolts: Reusing these bolts can cause them to stretch, back out, or snap under high torque, destroying the transmission bellhousing and crankshaft.
- Skipping the Crank/Cam Relearn: Skipping the mandatory Crankshaft Position Sensor relearn and knock sensor calibration reset, leading to immediate misfires, rough idling, or a flashing check engine light.
- Reusing Gaskets and Seals: Failing to replace gaskets, particularly for the turbocharger, intake, and exhaust, causing leaks and performance issues.
Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every engine of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:
🔎 Recommended at install: Premature wear of the fuel control valve plunger allows excess fuel to enter the pump, causing a rich mixture, stalling, or loss of power. Diagnostic codes P0088 or P008800 may trigger.
🔎 Recommended at install: Water seeps into the knock sensor connector during heavy rain or car washes, triggering false DTC P1326 and forcing limp-home mode. Replace the knock sensor and install a revised wiring harness kit with improved weather sealing.
🔎 Recommended at install: ECU software update to listen for early acoustic signatures of connecting rod bearing wear and limit engine RPM to prevent catastrophic block failure.
🔎 Recommended at install: Increased oil consumption potentially due to piston ring or valve seal wear. Regular oil level checks are recommended.
🔎 Recommended at install: Timing chain can stretch over high mileage, potentially causing a rattling noise on startup. Inspect timing components during installation.

Policies, in plain English.
Shipping & Handling
- Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
- Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
- The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
- Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance
120-Day Warranty
This part includes a 120-day warranty.
- If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
- Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
- Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation
Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.
Returns (30 Days)
We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.
- Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
- Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
- Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
- Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
- Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited
Damaged in Shipping?
Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:
- Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
- Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
- Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
- Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery
We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.
Order Cancellation
Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
