What’s involved: Twin Motor Unit Motor Rotor Position Sensor Learning / Handshake
After physically installing the TMU, you must perform the rotor position sensor learning procedure using a dealer-level scan tool (such as the Honda i-HDS). If this calibration is skipped, the vehicle's Power Control Unit (PCU) will not be able to precisely control the electric motors, resulting in immediate fault codes and a disabled hybrid system.
Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:
- High-Voltage Disabling (CRITICAL SAFETY STEP): Before touching any orange cables or unbolting the TMU, you must completely disable the high-voltage system by removing the service plug and waiting at least 3 minutes.
- Fragile Internal Components: Do not use impact wrenches on the housing bolts, and avoid jarring or dropping the unit during transit or installation.
- Subframe Mount Inspection: The TMU is suspended by rubber mounting brackets (Acura Part # 50710-TRX-A01 and 50720-TRX-A01) which are prone to tearing and should be inspected/replaced.
- Fluid Confusion: The TMU uses specific Acura ATF DW-1 fluid. Do NOT use standard Acura DPSF or VTM-4 fluid, as they are highly conductive and will cause an immediate electrical short circuit.

- Ordering for a Non-Hybrid MDX: Standard gas-only MDX models use a mechanical rear differential and cannot use this high-voltage Twin Motor Unit.
- Using the Wrong Fluid: Filling this TMU with DPSF instead of Acura ATF DW-1 will cause an internal electrical short, instantly ruining the electric motors.
- Skipping the Calibration Step: Installers often expect this unit to be plug-and-play and assume a unit is defective when it throws codes, when it actually just requires the Rotor Position Sensor Learning procedure.
