If the motor is turned while the balancer is off, the valve timing will be lost and may cause bent valves.

Do not pull the harmonic balancer unless absolutely necessary because the lower timing gear is not keyed to the crankshaft. If the motor is spun over with the harmonic balancer off, the valve timing will be thrown off and cause bent valves.
