Know This Transmission Before You Buy
The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this transmission family:
A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right transmission shows up:
- Confirm vehicle is AWD (4MATIC) by checking badging, window sticker, or VIN code M005.
- Confirm engine is the 2.0L Turbocharged 4-Cylinder (M274).
- Verify transmission build code has Code A89 (Reduced Friction) requiring Blue fluid.
What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:
Special tools this job needs:
- Mercedes 722.9 bottom-fill adapter (e.g., Assenmacher ATF129 or CTA 7415)
- Fluid transfer pump/dispenser
- Professional diagnostic scan tool (Xentry/DAS, Thinkcar 689BT, or iSCAN NX) capable of SCN coding
- E-Torx (star) socket set
- Engine support bar/brace
- Torque converter holding tool
Budget for these consumables at install:
- Mercedes-Benz Specification 236.15 (Blue Fluid) ATF (e.g., Mobil ATF 134 FE or Fuchs Titan ATF 7134 FE)
- 9.0 to 10.2 Liters of ATF (for dry fill/torque converter drain)
- Filter & Pan Gasket Kit (including green overflow pipe)
- 6 Aluminum Pan Bolts (one-time-use stretch bolts)
- Torque Converter Seal (front pump/input shaft seal)
- Drain Plug Copper Washer
- Transmission Cooler-Line Flush
What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:
What’s involved: SCN Coding, Virginizing, and Adaptive Relearn
The TCM is a Theft-Relevant Part (TRP) locked to the donor vehicle's FBS4 security system. It must be 'virginized' and SCN-coded to the new VIN, or the original mechatronic unit must be swapped into the donor transmission. A shift adaptation relearn is required after installation.
Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:
- Torque Converter Seating: Ensure the torque converter is fully seated and engaged onto the front oil pump splines before bolting to the engine to avoid cracking the pump gear.
- Magnesium Case Care: The case is magnesium. Only use correct aluminum bolts for the oil pan and housing-to-case connections. Never use steel bolts or power tools.
- Bottom-Fill Temperature Dance: Fluid level must be set by pumping fluid through the bottom drain plug, running the engine, and monitoring temperature. Remove the fill adapter to let excess fluid drain out of the green overflow pipe at exactly 45°C (113°F).
- Conductor Plate Programming: The unit is inoperable until electronically married to the vehicle.
- Cooler Line Contamination: The cooler and lines must be professionally flushed to prevent debris from the failed unit from contaminating the replacement.
Easy to get right once you know them:
- Ordering for a Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) Model: AWD transmissions have an integrated transfer case and do not fit RWD models.
- Using the Wrong ATF (Red vs. Blue): Using older Red MB 236.14 fluid instead of the required Blue MB 236.15 fluid causes clutch slippage and failure.
- Reusing the Aluminum Pan Bolts: Reusing these stretch bolts leads to them snapping or backing out, causing catastrophic fluid leaks.
- Skipping the Programming Step: Expecting a plug-and-play install without virginizing/SCN coding or swapping the original TCM, leaving the car in limp mode.
- Assuming a Software Update Will Fix a Mechanical Fault: Attempting to resolve physical valve body or conductor plate wear with software updates.
Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every transmission of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:
🔎 Recommended at install: Replace mechatronic conductor plate or repair speed sensors (Y3/8n1, Y3/8n2, Y3/8n3).
🔎 Recommended at install: Perform software updates and precise adaptive relearn procedure.
🔎 Recommended at install: Replace rubber O-rings on the tips of the hydraulic solenoids inside the valve body.
🔎 Recommended at install: Clean or replace the blue torque converter lockup control solenoid (KÜB/TCC).

Shipping & Handling
- Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
- Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
- The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
- Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance
120-Day Warranty
This part includes a 120-day warranty.
- If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
- Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
- Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation
Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.
Returns (30 Days)
We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.
- Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
- Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
- Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
- Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
- Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited
Damaged in Shipping?
Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:
- Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
- Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
- Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
- Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery
We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.
Order Cancellation
Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
