Know This Transmission Before You Buy

The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this transmission family:

A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right transmission shows up:

  • Check the driver's door jamb label under the 'A/TM' section to ensure it reads 'U660F'.
  • Verify the vehicle's VIN 5th digit is 'K' (for Highlander models, designating the 3.5L V6 engine paired with AWD).
  • Confirm the engine is a 3.5L V6 (2GR-FE) and the vehicle is All-Wheel Drive (AWD).
🔎 Where to look: Look for the stamped serial number on the top of the transmission case, the barcode sticker on the front-facing side of the transmission on the black metal cover of the valve body, or the QR code label on top of the transmission case containing the 60-digit compensation code.

What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:

8.0 to 10.5 hoursshop labor$1,100 to $2,000 USDtypical shop bill, on top of the partAdvanced / ExpertDIY difficulty

Special tools this job needs:

  • Engine support bar
  • Subframe adapter or heavy-duty transmission jack
  • Toyota Techstream diagnostic software or high-end bi-directional scan tool
  • Digital angle gauge
🔌 Wiring harness: The TCM is integrated into the main Engine Control Module (ECM) under the hood, not on the transmission itself. No VIN-specific flashing or immobilizer re-marriage is required when replacing only the mechanical transmission assembly.

Budget for these consumables at install:

  • Toyota Genuine ATF WS (World Standard) fluid (approx. 7 to 10 quarts total)
  • New transmission filter (media type) and pan gasket
  • Front pump / torque converter seal
  • Left and right CV axle seals
  • Professional cooler-line flush solvent

What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:

⚠️ Requiredprogramming / calibration⚠️ Yesdealer tool needed✅ NoECU/PCM re-marriage

What’s involved: Transaxle Compensation Code Registration & TCM Adaptive Relearn

Requires a dealer-level scan tool to input the unique 60-digit alphanumeric Transaxle Compensation Code (found on the QR label on top of the replacement transmission) into the vehicle's TCM. Once registered, the TCM memory must be reset, followed by a specific adaptive relearn drive cycle.

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

  • Torque Converter Seating: Must be fully seated (typically three distinct clicks/drops) before bolting to the engine to prevent cracking the oil pump gear.
  • Subframe Alignment & Dowel Pins: Ensure engine-to-transmission alignment dowel pins are present in the engine block to prevent crooked seating.
  • Fluid Level Check Procedure: No dipstick. Must perform a highly specific overflow level check with the vehicle level and engine idling.
  • Transfer Case Re-marriage: Clean and grease transfer case input shaft splines with high-pressure grease before sliding onto the transmission output shaft.
  • Take a Picture of the QR Code BEFORE Install: The 60-digit compensation code is printed on a label on top of the transmission case and is extremely difficult to read once installed.

Easy to get right once you know them:

  • Forgetting to swap the lower oil cooler tube union (TSB T-TT-0288-14) from the old transmission case.
  • Checking fluid level at normal operating temperature or with the engine off, leading to severe underfilling.
  • Forgetting to reset the adaptive shift memory and program the 60-digit compensation code, causing harsh shifts and premature clutch pack failure.
  • Ordering an AWD (U660F) transmission for a FWD vehicle (U660E) or vice versa.

Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every transmission of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:

🔎 Recommended at install: Mandates flushing the cooler lines, verifying alignment pins, and resetting the adaptive learned values.

severeTSB T-SB-0134-14 / T-SB-0134-16 (Installation Precautions)All

🔎 Recommended at install: Warns that improper torque converter installation or failure to flush lines will cause immediate oil pump or internal transmission damage.

moderateTSB L-SB-0011-13 / T-SB-0036-13 (WS ATF Level Adjustment)All

🔎 Recommended at install: Clarifies the highly specific temperature-based fluid level setting procedure using diagnostic software or jumper pins.

🔎 Recommended at install: Addresses wear in the solenoid modulator valve and bore, causing erratic shifts, solenoid codes, and erratic torque converter clutch (TCC) operation.

🔎 Recommended at install: Caused by wear in the B2 apply control valve and bore.

severeCounter Drive Gear Bearing FailureAll

🔎 Recommended at install: Main housing bearing breaks its seat in the case, causing gear misalignment, metal shavings, and catastrophic internal failure.

severeTorque Converter Clutch (TCC) Shudder / Lock-up Control Valve WearAll

🔎 Recommended at install: Wear in the lock-up control valve bore leads to TCC slip, shuddering under light acceleration, and eventual torque converter failure.

moderateShift Flares (2-3 Shift Flare)All

🔎 Recommended at install: Solenoid modulator valve bore wear causes erratic line pressure, leading to RPM spikes (flares) during shifts.

severeNHTSA Recall 11V-442 (Safety Recall B0H)2011 Sienna AWD

🔎 Recommended at install: Right-hand front drive shaft (axle) may have been manufactured incorrectly and could snap, leading to a loss of motive power.

Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 400-62814-5598466). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.

Policies, in plain English.

Shipping & Handling

  • Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
  • Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
  • The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
  • Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance

120-Day Warranty

This part includes a 120-day warranty.

  • If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
  • Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
  • Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation

Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.

Returns (30 Days)

We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.

  • Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
  • Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
  • Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
  • Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
  • Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited

Damaged in Shipping?

Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:

  • Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
  • Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
  • Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
  • Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery

We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.

Order Cancellation

Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
