The GM 9T45 uses individually flow-tested solenoids. The unique flow characteristics are represented by the 16-digit Transmission Unique Number (TUN) printed on the case tag. When installing, the mechanic must program the TCM with the new solenoid characterization data file by entering the TUN into the GM SPS2 system, followed by a Transmission Service Fast Learn / Adaptive Relearn procedure. Sources differ on RPO codes (M3F vs M3U) - confirm with us before install.
Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:
- Document the 16-digit TUN before bolting the transmission in, as it is nearly impossible to see once installed.
- Ensure the torque converter is fully seated into the transmission front pump before bolting to the engine to prevent crushing the internal fluid pump.
- Use subframe alignment dowels during reassembly to maintain steering geometry.
- Fluid level must be checked via the fluid level control plug/standpipe on the side of the case with the vehicle level, engine idling, and fluid temperature between 85C and 95C (185F to 203F).
