Know This Transmission Before You Buy

The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this transmission family:

A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right transmission shows up:

  • Confirm the 8th digit of the VIN is Y, 5, or K to verify the 2.0L LSY Turbocharged engine.
  • Scan the QR code on the driver's door jamb silver certification label to confirm RPO codes MI1 (10L60 transmission) and MQA (Rear-Wheel Drive).
  • Physically look under the vehicle to confirm it is Rear-Wheel Drive (single driveshaft to the rear, no front axle shafts, front differential, or transfer case).
🔎 Where to look: The Transmission Unique Number (TUN) is printed on a barcode label/sticker located on the transmission case (typically on the passenger side or top of the case).

What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:

7-12 hoursshop labor1050-2000typical shop bill, on top of the partExpertDIY difficulty

Special tools this job needs:

  • Transmission jack
  • Engine support fixture/bar
  • E-Torx socket set
  • Fluid pump and bottom-fill pan adapter
  • J-2534 programming pass-thru device (e.g., GM MDI2)
  • Active GM SPS2 subscription
🔌 Wiring harness: Wiring harnesses differ significantly between different vehicle models using the 10-speed family; ensure correct application fitment.

Budget for these consumables at install:

  • GM DEXRON ULV (Ultra-Low Viscosity) ATF
  • Transmission filter (GM Part # 24294355 / ACDelco TF937)
  • Pan gasket (GM Part # 24297886)
  • Torque converter input seal
  • Driveshaft seals
  • Dedicated transmission cooler flush aerosol
  • Exhaust flange gaskets
  • Stretch-bolts for the transmission mount

What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:

⚠️ Requiredprogramming / calibration⚠️ Yesdealer tool needed⚠️ YesECU/PCM re-marriage

What’s involved: Solenoid Valve Characterization Reprogramming (MCVM - Mechanical Characterization and Virtual Matching), VIN-Specific Programming, and Transmission Fast Learn

The internal Transmission Control Module (TCM) must be flashed using GM's Service Programming System (SPS2) via a J-2534 tool. The unique 16-digit Transmission Unique Number (TUN) from the replacement transmission's barcode sticker must be entered to download the correct solenoid characterization data. A 'Transmission Fast Learn' process must then be run to calibrate clutch apply pressures.

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

  • Torque converter must be fully seated into the transmission input shaft and oil pump gears (three distinct drops/clicks) before bolting to the engine. If not fully seated, tightening the bellhousing bolts will instantly crack the internal oil pump. The face of the torque converter must be recessed at least 1 inch from the bellhousing face.
  • The transmission has no dipstick. Fluid level must be checked via a standpipe in the bottom of the pan. Fluid must be pumped in cold, then with the engine idling, checked strictly when fluid temperature is between 95°F and 113°F (35°C to 45°C). Never turn the engine off with the fill plug removed.
  • Engine block alignment dowels must be clean and fully in place. Never use bellhousing bolts to force or pull the transmission case to the engine block.
  • The transmission cooler and lines must be professionally flushed before connecting to prevent debris from the failed unit from immediately ruining the replacement transmission.

Easy to get right once you know them:

  • Skipping the TUN/PUN programming, assuming the transmission is plug-and-play.
  • Using the wrong fluid, such as generic multi-vehicle synthetic ATF or Dexron VI, instead of the required Dexron ULV.
  • Checking the fluid level with the engine turned off, which causes severe underfilling.
  • Mismatched drivetrain ordering (purchasing a RWD unit for an AWD vehicle or vice versa).
  • Buying a 10-speed transmission from a different GM vehicle model (like a Camaro, CT4, or Silverado) assuming it will fit.

Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every transmission of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:

severeNHTSA Safety Recall 25V-148 (GM Recall N242480630) - Transmission control valve excessive wear leading to fluid pressure drop, harsh shifting, or drive wheel lock-up.2020-2021 Cadillac CT5 and other GM models with 10-speed transmissions

🔎 Recommended at install: Dealers install updated TCM software to monitor valve performance and limit the vehicle to 5th gear if excessive wear is detected. Swappers must ensure the vehicle's TCM is flashed with the latest GM software update.

moderateTSB 24-NA-040 - Parts restriction and diagnosis program.10L60 and 10L80 transmissions

🔎 Recommended at install: Dealerships must collect the Transmission Unique Number (TUN) and submit detailed diagnostic data to GM's Product Quality Center (PQC) before replacing or repairing.

🔎 Recommended at install: Check for road debris trapped inside the transmission mount.

🔎 Recommended at install: Commonly traced back to sticking solenoids or premature wear on the valve body separator plate.

Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 400-11777-5213219). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.

Policies, in plain English.

Shipping & Handling

  • Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
  • Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
  • The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
  • Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance

120-Day Warranty

This part includes a 120-day warranty.

  • If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
  • Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
  • Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation

Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.

Returns (30 Days)

We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.

  • Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
  • Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
  • Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
  • Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
  • Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited

Damaged in Shipping?

Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:

  • Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
  • Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
  • Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
  • Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery

We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.

Order Cancellation

Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
