Know This Transmission Before You Buy

The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this transmission family:

A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right transmission shows up:

  • Verify the vehicle is All-Wheel Drive (AWD).
  • Scan the QR code on the driver's side door B-pillar or check the glovebox sticker to verify transmission option code M3W and AWD option code 1SBK or 1SKB.
  • Confirm the vehicle has the 3.6L V6 engine (VIN 8th digit 'S' or 'W').
🔎 Where to look: Locate the barcode tag on the top or right side of your current transmission case. Verify that the GM part number matches 24041491.

What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:

8 to 13 hoursshop labor$1,200 - $2,200+typical shop bill, on top of the partExpertDIY difficulty

Special tools this job needs:

  • Engine support bar/fixture
  • Subframe jack
  • Transmission jack
  • GM-compatible J2534 programming tool or dealer-level scan tool (GDS2 / MDI 2)
  • Fluid transfer pump
🔌 Wiring harness: External wiring harnesses are not included; transfer original harness. Ensure the internal harness connector pins are clean and undamaged.

Budget for these consumables at install:

  • Mobil 1 Synthetic LV ATF HP ('Blue Label') or GM DEXRON-VI Automatic Transmission Fluid
  • External auxiliary cartridge filter (part number 24272927) if equipped
  • New torque converter hub seal
  • New left and right axle seals
  • Professional-grade cooler-line flush solvent
  • PTU-to-transmission seals and spline grease

What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:

⚠️ Requiredprogramming / calibration⚠️ Yesdealer tool needed⚠️ YesECU/PCM re-marriage

What’s involved: Solenoid Characterization Programming (SPS/SPS2) and Service Fast Learn (SFL)

If reusing your original TCM, a TCM Adaptive Relearn ('Fast Learn') is mandatory. If installing a replacement TCM, VIN-specific dealer programming (immobilizer/security re-marriage) via GM SPS2 is required. Additionally, you must program the unique TUN/PUN solenoid characterization data from the transmission tag into the TCM to prevent harsh shifting and calibration codes.

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

  • Torque Converter Seating: Ensure the torque converter is fully seated into the front pump before mating the transmission to the engine block. Tightening the bellhousing bolts with an unseated converter will instantly shatter the transmission oil pump.
  • Fluid Level Checking Temperature: The 9T65 has no dipstick and uses an internal fluid expansion tank that only opens when hot. You must run the engine and bring the transmission fluid temperature to exactly 185°F to 203°F (85°C to 95°C) before checking the level via the side check plug. Checking it cold will result in severe underfilling or overfilling.
  • Subframe Alignment: Mark the subframe alignment pins before dropping the subframe to ensure steering rack and suspension geometry align correctly upon reassembly.
  • PTU Transfer & Sealing: Properly grease the splines and replace the PTU-to-transmission seals to prevent cross-contamination of ATF and gear oil.

Easy to get right once you know them:

  • Ordering a FWD transmission for an AWD vehicle (or vice versa). FWD cases lack the mounting bosses and output shaft splines for the Power Transfer Unit (PTU).
  • Skipping Solenoid Characterization Programming or the Fast Learn procedure, which causes immediate harsh shifting, slipping, and diagnostic trouble codes.
  • Checking the fluid level cold. Because the side-cover expansion tank holds fluid when cold, checking it cold leads to a massive underfill, resulting in immediate slipping and gear lockout.
  • Reusing the old torque converter, which will wash trapped metal debris from the original failure directly into the replacement transmission's valve body.
  • Failing to hot-flush the cooler lines, leading to contaminated solenoids and stuck valve codes (P0746/P0747).

Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every transmission of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:

severeIncorrect Sun Gear / Half-Shaft Separation (NHTSA Recall 23V172000 / GM N222390180)2023

🔎 Recommended at install: Inspect and replace incorrectly sized sun gear to prevent driver-side half-shaft disengagement.

severeClutch Backing Plate Snap Ring Failure (TSB 20-NA-136)9T65 family

🔎 Recommended at install: Requires transmission teardown to replace broken 1-2-3-4-5-6 Clutch Backing Plate Retaining Ring and clean metal debris from hydraulic system.

moderateTorque Converter Clutch (TCC) Shudder (TSB 18-NA-091)9T65 family

🔎 Recommended at install: Perform complete fluid flush with updated Mobil 1 Synthetic LV ATF HP fluid and perform TCM software update.

severeValve Body Check Ball Blow-Through (No Reverse)9T65 family

🔎 Recommended at install: Replace worn check ball #9 and the damaged separator plate.

severeSolenoid Clip Fatigue9T65 family

🔎 Recommended at install: Replace fatigued metal clips holding the solenoids in the valve body to prevent loss of line pressure.

🔎 Recommended at install: Follow updated fluid level checking procedures strictly at specified operating temperatures.

Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 400-11763-5598843). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.

Policies, in plain English.

Shipping & Handling

  • Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
  • Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
  • The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
  • Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance

120-Day Warranty

This part includes a 120-day warranty.

  • If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
  • Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
  • Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation

Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.

Returns (30 Days)

We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.

  • Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
  • Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
  • Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
  • Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
  • Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited

Damaged in Shipping?

Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:

  • Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
  • Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
  • Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
  • Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery

We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.

Order Cancellation

Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
