Transmission Assembly for 2023 Volvo XC60
Product Notes Read before buying
This is an 8-speed automatic transmission for Volvo XC60 models with the 2.0L B5 mild-hybrid engine and All-Wheel Drive (AWD). Fitment is specific to vehicles where the 4th and 5th digits of the VIN are 'L1'. This part will NOT fit models with the more powerful B6 engine or the T8 Plug-in Hybrid powertrain.
Voice or type your vehicle details and Wrenchy will confirm fitment in seconds.

Know This Transmission Before You Buy
The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this transmission family:
A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right transmission shows up:
- Confirm your vehicle is All-Wheel Drive (AWD). This transmission will not fit FWD models.
- Verify that the 4th and 5th digits of your 17-digit VIN are 'L1'.
- Locate the identification tag on your original transmission case and verify it designates the model as TG-81SC and matches Volvo part number 36003553 or 360035539.
What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:
Special tools this job needs:
- Engine support bridge/bar
- Subframe alignment pins
- Transmission jack or engine hoist
- 17mm Allen (Hex) socket
- T40 Torx socket
- T55 Torx socket
- Volvo VIDA/DiCE diagnostic software or high-end professional scan tool
Budget for these consumables at install:
- Transmission Fluid (ATF) meeting Volvo AW-2 or Volvo AW-1 / JWS 3324 (Aisin Type WS) specification
- 8 to 12 liters (8.5 to 12.7 quarts) of ATF for a complete fill
- New Torque Converter Seal (front pump seal)
- New Axle Seals (left and right)
- New O-rings for the transmission fill, drain, and level plugs
- Professional transmission cooler-line flush solvent
What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:
What’s involved: TCM adaptive relearn and transmission fluid life counter reset
A TCM adaptive relearn is mandatory. The vehicle's computer must be put into a special Control Module Adaptation mode to learn the engagement points and pressures of the replacement unit. Running the replacement unit without resetting these adaptations will apply incorrect pressures, resulting in poor shifting, harsh engagement, error codes, and rapid clutch pack burnout. This procedure officially requires Volvo VIDA/DiCE diagnostic software, though some high-end professional aftermarket scan tools may have this capability.
Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:
- Torque Converter Seating: Ensure the torque converter is fully seated onto the input shaft and oil pump (it must click inward three distinct times). If not fully seated, tightening the bellhousing bolts will crush and crack the internal oil pump gear, destroying the transmission instantly.
- Fluid Level Setting Procedure: This transmission has no dipstick and uses a standpipe inside the drain plug. The level must be checked with the engine running and the transmission fluid temperature exactly between 50°C and 60°C (122°F to 140°F). Remove the inner T40 Torx plug; a small trickle should come out. If nothing comes out, it is underfilled; if a large amount comes out, it is overfilled.
- AWD Transfer Case (PTO) Alignment: Be extremely careful not to damage the splines or shaft seals when mating the original transfer case to the replacement transmission to prevent severe fluid leaks.
- Subframe Realignment: Because the front subframe must be lowered, subframe alignment pins must be used during reassembly to prevent steering wheel off-center issues, suspension noise, and rapid tire wear.
- TCM Adaptation is NOT Optional: The vehicle will not drive correctly and may suffer immediate damage if the TCM adaptation procedure is not performed before driving.
Easy to get right once you know them:
- Using the Wrong Fluid: Using generic multi-vehicle synthetic ATF instead of the required Volvo AW-2 / AW-1 / JWS 3324 (Aisin WS) spec fluid. This transmission is highly sensitive to fluid viscosity and friction modifiers.
- Skipping the Adaptive Relearn: Attempting to drive the vehicle before resetting the computer's adaptation values, which causes the computer to apply high-pressure parameters from the old worn transmission to the replacement unit.
- Failing to Flush the Cooler Lines: Skipping the cooler flush, which allows metal shavings and clutch debris from the previous failed transmission to enter and destroy the replacement unit's delicate valve body.
- Incorrect Fluid Level Check: Checking the fluid level with the engine off or when the transmission is cold, leading to a grossly inaccurate reading.
Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every transmission of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:
🔎 Recommended at install: Software timing issue. Avoid shifting from Park (P) to Drive (D) or Reverse (R) too quickly after starting the engine before the vehicle's startup self-check completes.
🔎 Recommended at install: Typically caused by wear in the valve body bores or sticking solenoids (SL1, SL2, SL3, SL4, SLT, SLU). Requires valve body service or solenoid replacement.
🔎 Recommended at install: Requires replacement of the K1 clutch drum.
🔎 Recommended at install: Software update for the Engine Control Module (ECM) and Transmission Control Module (TCM). Do not replace any parts.
🔎 Recommended at install: Software update in the TCM.

Policies, in plain English.
Shipping & Handling
- Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
- Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
- The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
- Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance
120-Day Warranty
This part includes a 120-day warranty.
- If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
- Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
- Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation
Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.
Returns (30 Days)
We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.
- Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
- Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
- Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
- Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
- Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited
Damaged in Shipping?
Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:
- Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
- Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
- Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
- Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery
We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.
Order Cancellation
Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
