Know This Transmission Before You Buy

The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this transmission family:

A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right transmission shows up:

  • Verify the 4th, 5th, and 6th digits of the VIN are CY1 (designates 1.5L Turbo). If CY2, the vehicle is a Hybrid and this will not fit.
  • Confirm the vehicle trim level is LX or EX (Sport, EX-L, Sport-L, and Touring are Hybrids).
  • Physically check the barcode label on the original transmission case for the part number 20031-6MM-A01 or the 6MM/s6MMC21 designation.
🔎 Where to look: Look for a barcode label/sticker on the top or side of the transmission case, or the metal casting stamp near the starter motor.

What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:

6.0 to 12.0shop labor900 to 2,100typical shop bill, on top of the partAdvanced / ExpertDIY difficulty

Special tools this job needs:

  • Engine support bar/hoist
  • Subframe adapter/jack
  • Torque wrench
  • Bidirectional scan tool (Honda i-HDS or equivalent)
  • Fluid pump or long-funnel system
🔌 Wiring harness: External wiring harnesses are not included; transfer original harness and ensure integral connections are secure.

Budget for these consumables at install:

  • Genuine Honda HCF-2 CVT Fluid (Do NOT use standard ATF or generic CVT fluids)
  • New transmission pan gasket
  • New torque converter seal (input shaft/front pump seal)
  • New axle seals (left and right)
  • New drain plug and fill plug crush washers
  • CVT-safe cooler line flush solvent

What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:

What’s involved: TCM Adaptive Relearn / Start Clutch Calibration

A professional bidirectional scan tool (such as Honda i-HDS or high-end equivalent) is required to perform the CVT Start Clutch Calibration and reset the CVT Fluid Deterioration monitor. Skipping this step causes harsh engagement, shuddering, or slipping.

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

  • Torque Converter Seating: Ensure the torque converter is fully seated (typically three distinct clicks/drops while rotating) before bolting to the engine to avoid cracking the internal oil pump.
  • Subframe Alignment: Dropping the front subframe is required. Use subframe alignment pins during reinstallation to preserve steering and suspension geometry.
  • Fluid Level Check Procedure: No dipstick is present. Check fluid level via the overflow check bolt on the side of the case with the vehicle level, engine running, and fluid temperature between 95°F and 113°F (35°C to 45°C).
  • Axle Seal Damage: Avoid nicking the new axle seals with the axle shaft splines during insertion.
  • NEVER Power Flush: Do not power flush the replacement transmission itself. Only flush the cooler lines and warmer.

Easy to get right once you know them:

  • Ordering this transmission for a Hybrid model (which uses a completely different e-CVT system).
  • Using incorrect or universal CVT fluid instead of Genuine Honda HCF-2 fluid.
  • Skipping the TCM adaptive relearn/start clutch calibration after installation.
  • Failing to flush the transmission cooler lines, which introduces old debris into the replacement unit.
  • Misdiagnosing a weak 12V battery (which can throw false transmission codes) as a mechanical transmission failure.

Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every transmission of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:

moderateCVT Fluid Pressure Low (DTC P0868)2023-2025

🔎 Recommended at install: Diagnose and repair externally; typically caused by a faulty pressure sensor or a sticking solenoid valve cover assembly.

severeCVT Belt Slippage & Shudder2023-2025

🔎 Recommended at install: Change CVT fluid regularly every 30,000 miles to prevent fluid degradation and debris accumulation.

moderateFluid Contamination / Metal Shavings2023-2025

🔎 Recommended at install: Monitor fluid during early changes. Excessive metal indicates belt/pulley wear requiring inspection.

Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 400-11616-5029810). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.

Policies, in plain English.

Shipping & Handling

  • Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
  • Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
  • The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
  • Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance

120-Day Warranty

This part includes a 120-day warranty.

  • If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
  • Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
  • Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation

Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.

Returns (30 Days)

We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.

  • Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
  • Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
  • Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
  • Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
  • Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited

Damaged in Shipping?

Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:

  • Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
  • Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
  • Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
  • Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery

We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.

Order Cancellation

Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
