Know This Transmission Before You Buy

The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this transmission family:

A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right transmission shows up:

  • Verify the transmission ID tag barcode sticker on the top or side of the current transmission case starts with MXA (e.g., MXA20, MXA30, MXA31).
  • Confirm the engine is a 3.5L V6 and the vehicle is Front-Wheel Drive (FWD).
🔎 Where to look: Barcode sticker located on the top or side of the transmission case (typically near the starter motor or shift actuator).

What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:

7.5 to 12.0 hoursshop labor$800 to $1,800typical shop bill, on top of the partExpertDIY difficulty

Special tools this job needs:

  • Engine support bar
  • Subframe adapter / jack
  • Transmission jack
  • Fluid line disconnect tool
  • Professional OBD2 scan tool with Honda-specific bi-directional capabilities (i-HDS / HDS)
🔌 Wiring harness: The 10-speed uses an electronic shift-by-wire system. The actuator on the transmission must be handled with care. Do not manually force the shift lever on the transmission case.

Budget for these consumables at install:

  • Honda Genuine ATF-Type 2.0 (Part # 08200-9015) - 8 to 10 quarts
  • Serviceable external transmission filter (Part # 25430-PLR-003)
  • New axle/half-shaft seals (left and right)
  • New torque converter hub seal (input shaft seal)
  • New crush washer for drain plug (18mm, Part # 90471-PX4-000)
  • New crush washer for fill plug (Part # 94109-20000)
  • New crush washer for level check plug (12mm, Part # 90471-59C-000)
  • Professional transmission flush solvent

What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:

⚠️ Requiredprogramming / calibration⚠️ Yesdealer tool needed✅ NoECU/PCM re-marriage

What’s involved: TCM Adaptive Relearn & Solenoid Valve Characterization Data Transfer

The TCM must be updated with the unique solenoid characterization data of the replacement transmission, and an adaptive relearn (clutch pressure calibration) must be performed using a Honda-compatible diagnostic tool (such as i-HDS). Skipping this will cause extremely harsh shifting, slipping, or fault codes (P07DC, P0736).

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

  • Torque Converter Seating: Ensure the torque converter is fully seated into the front pump before bolting the transmission to the engine to avoid cracking the front pump gear.
  • Subframe Alignment & Steering Angle Sensor: Mark the subframe alignment or use alignment pins during reinstallation to prevent steering angle sensor errors that disable the Honda Sensing safety suite.
  • Shift-by-Wire Actuator: Handle with care; do not force the shift lever manually without following the service manual procedure.
  • Fluid Level Check Procedure: No dipstick is present. The fluid level must be checked via a 12mm level-check bolt on the side of the case while the vehicle is perfectly level and the fluid temperature is monitored via scan tool to be exactly between 104°F and 113°F (40°C - 45°C).
  • Mandatory Cooler Flush: The transmission cooler lines and warmer assembly must be thoroughly flushed to clear out metallic debris from the failed unit.

Easy to get right once you know them:

  • Using the wrong fluid (e.g., ATF DW-1 or ATF-Type 3.1 instead of the strictly required Honda ATF-Type 2.0).
  • Ordering for the wrong year/trim (e.g., 2018-2019 Odyssey models which are electrically incompatible).
  • Failing to transfer or program solenoid characterization data to the PCM/TCM.
  • Not flushing the cooler lines, which recirculates debris and destroys the replacement unit.
  • Neglecting future maintenance (failing to perform drain and fills every 45,000-60,000 miles).

Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every transmission of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:

Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 400-11195-4676118). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.

Policies, in plain English.

Shipping & Handling

  • Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
  • Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
  • The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
  • Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance

120-Day Warranty

This part includes a 120-day warranty.

  • If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
  • Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
  • Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation

Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.

Returns (30 Days)

We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.

  • Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
  • Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
  • Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
  • Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
  • Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited

Damaged in Shipping?

Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:

  • Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
  • Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
  • Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
  • Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery

We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.

Order Cancellation

Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
