Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:
- Torque converter must be fully seated. Do not use bellhousing bolts to draw the transmission to the engine, or you will crack the fluid pump.
- The main internal sump filter is not serviceable without splitting the case. Only replace the external auxiliary cartridge filter.
- Fluid level must be checked via the level set plug on the side of the case while the engine is running, vehicle is level, and fluid temperature is strictly between 85°C and 95°C (or 80°C and 90°C).
- The transmission cooler and lines must be professionally flushed to prevent debris from the failed unit from destroying the replacement.
- A buzzing or clicking noise from the transmission after shutdown is normal dither cleaning cycle performed by the T87A TCM.
