Know This Transmission Before You Buy

The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this transmission family:

A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right transmission shows up:

  • Confirm vehicle is All-Wheel Drive (AWD).
  • Confirm the 8th digit of the VIN is 'S' (verifies 3.6L V6 engine).
  • Check the RPO codes on the glove box sticker for M3W or M3V.
🔎 Where to look: Locate the barcode identification tag on the left side of the transmission case near the manual park release lever. Confirm the 13-digit GM Part Number is 24296142 and the 4-letter broadcast code is 0KKB or 0KKBAWD.

What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:

8 to 14 hoursshop labor1100 to 2800typical shop bill, on top of the partExpertDIY difficulty

Special tools this job needs:

  • Overhead engine support fixture
  • Subframe/transmission jack
  • GM-compatible scan tool (MDI 2 with Techline Connect / SPS2)
  • Torque wrench
  • GM-approved cooler flushing machine
🔌 Wiring harness: The 9T65 uses an electronic shift-by-wire system (ETRS). Ensure the manual park release lever is in the correct default position to avoid ETRS-related codes.

Budget for these consumables at install:

  • Automatic Transmission Fluid (sources differ: DEXRON-VI vs DEXRON ULV — confirm with us before install)
  • Torque Converter Seal (GM Part 24281174 or equivalent)
  • Left and Right CV Axle Seals (GM Part 24281173 / 24281175)
  • Professional Cooler-Line Flush
  • Transmission Cooler Bypass Valve (TBV) updated lower-temperature 70C valve (GM Part per TSB 21-NA-199)

What’s involved: VIN-Specific Programming & Solenoid Characterization

The GM 9T65 has individual solenoid characterization data (PUN/TUN numbers) etched on the transmission case and valve body. You must use a GM dealer-level scan tool (MDI 2) with an active GM SPS2 subscription to program your vehicle's TCM with the replacement transmission's unique solenoid characterization data. Additionally, a TCM Adaptive Relearn must be performed.

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

  • Torque Converter Seating: Ensure the torque converter is fully seated (typically three distinct drops/clicks) before bolting the transmission to the engine to avoid cracking the internal oil pump.
  • Electronic Transmission Range Select (ETRS) Alignment: Ensure the external manual park release lever is in the correct default position to prevent getting stuck in park or throwing codes.
  • Subframe Alignment: Use alignment dowels when re-installing the subframe to preserve wheel alignment.
  • Fluid Level Checking Procedure: No dipstick is present. Check fluid level using the level control plug on the side of the case with the vehicle perfectly level, engine running at idle, and fluid temperature precisely between 185°F and 203°F (85°C to 95°C).
  • Cooler Flush is NOT Optional: Debris from the previous failed unit must be cleared with a heated, pulsing machine to prevent immediate solenoid damage.

Easy to get right once you know them:

  • Skipping Solenoid Characterization Programming: Attempting to drive without programming the specific solenoid flow-rate data (TUN/PUN) via GM SPS2 will cause harsh shifting, slipping, and clutch failure.
  • Trying to Replace the Filter: Buyers often order a filter kit expecting to drop a pan, but the filter is non-serviceable unless the case is split.
  • Reusing the Old Torque Converter: Reusing a contaminated converter will introduce metal debris into the replacement unit.
  • Incorrect Fluid Level Check: Checking the fluid level while the engine is off or cold leads to severe underfilling.
  • Buying the Wrong Drivetrain Version: Ordering an AWD transmission for a FWD vehicle.

Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every transmission of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:

severeIncorrect Sun Gear (NHTSA Recall 23V172000 / GM Campaign N222389310)2022–2023

🔎 Recommended at install: Ensure the recall service has been completed to prevent the driver-side half-shaft from disengaging, which causes sudden loss of propulsion or vehicle rollaway.

severeSnap Ring Failure / Transmission Shudder / Hard Shifting (TSB 20-NA-136)2018–2023

🔎 Recommended at install: The 1-2-3-4-5-6 Clutch Backing Plate Retaining Ring fatigues and breaks, releasing metal debris. Requires full transmission replacement or complete teardown to replace with updated parts.

moderateTorque Converter Clutch (TCC) Shudder (TSB 18-NA-091 / PIP5608H)2018–2022

🔎 Recommended at install: Perform a complete transmission fluid flush using updated ACDelco fluid.

moderateStart-Stop Accumulator Failure (NHTSA Recall 20V668000)Some 2019-2020 Acadia and 2020 XT6 models

🔎 Recommended at install: Check for missing bolts on the start-stop accumulator endcap which can lead to fluid leaks.

minorCooler Bypass Valve (TSB 21-NA-199)All years

🔎 Recommended at install: Replace the original Transmission Cooler Bypass Valve (TBV) with an updated part that allows the transmission to run cooler (158°F / 70°C).

Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 400-10789-5555983). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.

Policies, in plain English.

Shipping & Handling

  • Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
  • Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
  • The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
  • Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance

120-Day Warranty

This part includes a 120-day warranty.

  • If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
  • Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
  • Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation

Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.

Returns (30 Days)

We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.

  • Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
  • Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
  • Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
  • Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
  • Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited

Damaged in Shipping?

Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:

  • Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
  • Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
  • Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
  • Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery

We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.

Order Cancellation

Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
