Know This Transmission Before You Buy

The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this transmission family:

A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right transmission shows up:

  • Confirm that the 6th digit of your VIN is 3 to verify your vehicle is a Hybrid model equipped with the 2.0L naturally aspirated engine.
  • Locate the barcode label on the top of your transmission case (near the battery tray) and verify it displays the code MD3E.
  • Confirm you have a qualified shop willing to install a high-voltage hybrid transmission.
🔎 Where to look: Look for the bold MD3E identifier on the barcode label located on the top of the transmission case, typically visible near the battery tray and under the air intake ducting.

What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:

6.0 - 9.0shop labor900 - 1800typical shop bill, on top of the partExpertDIY difficulty

Special tools this job needs:

  • High-voltage insulated gloves (Class 0, rated for 1000V)
  • Insulated hand tools
  • Vehicle lift
  • Transmission jack
  • Advanced diagnostic scan tool capable of performing hybrid system diagnostics and bleeding the inverter coolant loop
🔌 Wiring harness: High-voltage orange wiring harness is not included and must be transferred. Ensure all high-voltage connectors are clean and undamaged.

Budget for these consumables at install:

  • Honda Genuine ATF DW-1 (Do NOT use Honda HCF-2 CVT fluid)
  • New drain plug crush washer (18mm, Part #90471-PX4-000)
  • Honda Type 2 Long Life Antifreeze/Coolant (for the hybrid inverter/transmission cooling loop)
  • Left and right CV axle seals

What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:

⚠️ Requiredprogramming / calibration⚠️ Yesdealer tool needed⚠️ YesECU/PCM re-marriage

What’s involved: TCM/Hybrid System Adaptive Relearn and Motor Calibration

After replacing the e-CVT, a dealer-level scan tool (such as Honda i-HDS) is required to clear any stored hybrid system codes, initialize the new traction motor resolver positions, perform a clutch engagement calibration/relearn, and ensure the hybrid control unit recognizes the new electric motor resolvers.

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

  • High-Voltage Safety: You must pull the high-voltage service plug (located under the rear seat) and wait at least 10 minutes for the high-voltage capacitors to discharge before touching any orange cables. Failure to do so can result in fatal electrical shock.
  • The CVT Fluid Trap: Many DIYers and general repair shops see e-CVT on the spec sheet and automatically pour in Honda HCF-2 CVT fluid. Doing so will quickly ruin the wet multi-plate clutch and the electric motor insulation. You must use Honda Genuine ATF DW-1.
  • Inverter Coolant Bleeding: The e-CVT is cooled by the hybrid system's dedicated coolant loop. When replacing the unit, this loop is opened. You must refill it with Honda Type 2 Blue Coolant and perform the electronic bleeding procedure using a scan tool to run the electric water pump. Air pockets in this system will cause the inverter/motors to overheat and shut down.
  • Resolver Alignment / Calibration: The electric motors inside the transmission rely on resolver sensors to detect rotor position. If the resolver calibration is not performed via scan tool post-install, the vehicle may refuse to enter Ready mode or may experience severe shuddering.
  • Alignment Dowels: Check the engine block and the new transmission case. If the hollow alignment dowel pins are stuck on both (or missing from both), the transmission will not mate correctly or will misalign, causing severe damage.

Easy to get right once you know them:

  • Ordering for the Wrong Engine/Year: Buying this unit for a 1.5T or 2.0T standard Accord. It will not bolt up, the electronics are completely different, and it lacks a traditional gearset. This unit ONLY fits the 2.0L Naturally Aspirated Hybrid.
  • Using the Wrong Fluid: Buyers see CVT and automatically pour in Honda HCF-2 fluid (which is used in the 1.5T Accord). This is a common mistake and will ruin the hybrid transmission. You must use ATF DW-1.
  • Ignoring the Hybrid Bleed Procedure: DIYers often fill the hybrid coolant reservoir and assume it will bleed itself. It won't. The electric pump must be activated via a scan tool to purge air pockets.
  • Neglecting the High-Voltage Disconnect: DIYers attempting this swap without proper high-voltage training or tools risk severe injury or damaging the car's expensive Power Control Unit (PCU).
  • Assuming Any Shop Can Do It: Many independent shops refuse to touch high-voltage systems due to liability and lack of insulated tooling. Make sure your installer is hybrid-certified before ordering.

Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every transmission of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:

severeDirect-Drive Clutch Wear & Highway Shudder2018–2019

🔎 Recommended at install: Over time, especially if the fluid is not changed, the clutch plates glaze and slip, causing a noticeable pulsing or shuddering sensation on the highway. This often triggers trouble code P0868 and eventually requires complete transaxle replacement.

moderateFluid Contamination2018–2019

🔎 Recommended at install: As the wet clutch slips and engages, it sheds microscopic friction material directly into the transmission fluid. If the fluid is not serviced regularly, this metallic/friction debris circulates through the unit, accelerating wear on the bearings and electric motor windings.

Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 400-10706-5258428). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.

Policies, in plain English.

Shipping & Handling

  • Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
  • Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
  • The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
  • Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance

120-Day Warranty

This part includes a 120-day warranty.

  • If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
  • Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
  • Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation

Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.

Returns (30 Days)

We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.

  • Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
  • Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
  • Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
  • Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
  • Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited

Damaged in Shipping?

Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:

  • Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
  • Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
  • Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
  • Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery

We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.

Order Cancellation

Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
