Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

• MQB Platform Mounting Angle: The 12-degree backward tilt makes the traditional side fill plug completely unusable. Filling via the side plug will underfill the unit by nearly 1 liter, leading to catastrophic 5th/6th gear failure.
• Dual-Drain Procedure: Must drain from both the main 17mm hex plug and by removing one of the lower selector fork pivot pins (T45 Torx) to remove all trapped fluid.
• Lock the Selector Shaft Before Draining: Before removing the selector fork pivot pin, you MUST lock the selector shaft in place using the angled locking pin on top of the case. Moving the shifter while the pin is out will cause internal shift forks to fall out of alignment, requiring a complete teardown.
• Reverse Switch Fill Method: Must fill exactly 2.1 liters of fluid through the reverse light switch hole (22mm) on top of the selector shaft using a slim hose.
• Replace Stretch Bolts: Single-use torque-to-yield bolts for axles and bellhousing must be replaced to prevent them from backing out or snapping.

• Moving the Shifter with the Pivot Pin Removed: Causes internal shift forks to drop out of place, requiring transmission disassembly.

• Reusing Stretch Bolts: Can cause axles to come loose or snap.
• Forgetting the Clutch Kit: Skipping clutch, pressure plate, or release bearing replacement during a labor-intensive swap.
• Ordering the Wrong 6-Speed: Assuming other VW 6-speed manual transmissions (like GTI or older Jetta units) are interchangeable without matching the TKR code.
