Know This Transmission Before You Buy

The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this transmission family:

A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right transmission shows up:

  • Verify the engine is the 2.0L 4-cylinder Turbo (VIN 8th digit 'X', RPO code 'LTG').
  • Confirm the vehicle has a 6-speed manual transmission (RPO code 'M13' or 'MN6').
  • Confirm the vehicle does NOT have the 1LE Track Package.
  • Check the Service Parts Identification label in the glove box or trunk floor for RPO codes.
🔎 Where to look: Locate the metal identification tag attached to one of the bolts securing the rear extension housing (tailhousing) to the main transmission case, or check the barcode/ID label printed on the side of the main case.

What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:

4 to 7 hoursshop labor$500 to $1,200typical shop bill, on top of the partAdvanced / ExpertDIY difficulty

Special tools this job needs:

  • Transmission jack
  • Clutch alignment tool
  • Hydraulic clutch line disconnect tool
  • Kent-Moore DT-51077 (Shift Rail Seal Installer)
  • Bolt-on lift pads for pinch welds
  • 3/8 inch square drive ratchet head
🔌 Wiring harness: Be careful not to pinch or damage the reverse light switch wiring harness on the top/side of the case during installation.

Budget for these consumables at install:

  • Manual Transmission Fluid (sources differ on part number: GM Part No. 88861800 / ACDelco 10-4033 vs GM Part No. 88863089 / ACDelco Manual Transmission Fluid)
  • Clutch Kit (clutch disc, pressure plate, and throwout bearing/slave cylinder)
  • Concentric Slave Cylinder (CSC)
  • Pilot Bearing
  • Rear Main Seal
  • Clutch Hydraulic Fluid (DOT 3 or DOT 4)
  • Medium-strength (blue) threadlocker

What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:

✅ Not requiredprogramming / calibration✅ Nodealer tool needed✅ NoECU/PCM re-marriage

What’s involved: none

This is a fully mechanical manual transmission. It does not contain a Transmission Control Module (TCM) or electronic valve bodies, so no VIN-specific programming or security re-marriage is required.

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

  • Clutch Hydraulic Bleeding: Notoriously difficult; traditional pumping often fails. Use a vacuum bleeder tool on the reservoir to draw out trapped air.
  • Driveshaft Alignment: Align the two-piece driveshaft perfectly and torque the center support bearing to spec to prevent high-speed vibrations.
  • Bellhousing Dowel Pins: Ensure alignment dowel pins are clean and fully seated. Do not force the transmission case against the engine block using bolts, or the aluminum case may crack.
  • Reverse Light Switch Connector: Avoid pinching the wiring harness during installation.
  • Fluid Fill Procedure: Always remove the fill plug before the drain plug to ensure you can refill the unit.
  • Exhaust & Driveshaft Removal: The entire center section of the exhaust and driveshaft must be removed to access the transmission.

Easy to get right once you know them:

  • Ordering for a 1LE Track Package Car: Standard non-cooler transmission lacks the integrated fluid pump and external line ports required for 1LE models.
  • Using Dexron VI Fluid: Dexron VI is NOT compatible and will cause gear whine, notchiness, and synchro damage. Use the specified GM manual transmission fluid.
  • Reusing the Old Concentric Slave Cylinder (CSC): Reusing a worn plastic CSC often leads to premature leaks, requiring a repeat of the entire labor process.
  • Attempting to Swap into a Cadillac ATS or Ford Mustang: Cases, bellhousing bolt patterns, input shafts, and shifter configurations are completely different.
  • Ordering for a V6 or V8 Camaro: The TR-3160 for the 2.0L has a specific bellhousing bolt pattern and gear ratios that do not match V6 or V8 engines.

Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every transmission of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:

🔎 Recommended at install: Remove speed sensor, check for wheel movement, and replace the output shaft nut and washer.

🔎 Recommended at install: Replace the plastic concentric slave cylinder (CSC) inside the bellhousing with a new OEM unit during transmission installation.

moderateAccidental Reverse Engagement2016–2024

🔎 Recommended at install: Be deliberate with shifting motions; the Camaro version lacks a physical reverse lockout collar on the shifter.

Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 400-10501-4857090). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.

Policies, in plain English.

Shipping & Handling

  • Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
  • Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
  • The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
  • Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance

120-Day Warranty

This part includes a 120-day warranty.

  • If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
  • Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
  • Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation

Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.

Returns (30 Days)

We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.

  • Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
  • Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
  • Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
  • Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
  • Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited

Damaged in Shipping?

Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:

  • Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
  • Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
  • Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
  • Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery

We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.

Order Cancellation

Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
