Know This Transmission Before You Buy

The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this transmission family:

A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right transmission shows up:

  • Verify the 8th digit of your VIN is 'E' or 'T' to confirm a 5.0L Supercharged V8 engine.
  • Locate the metal ID tag on the driver's side of the transmission case and confirm it displays ZF 8HP70.
  • Confirm the vehicle is All-Wheel Drive (AWD) with a twin-speed transfer case.
🔎 Where to look: Look for Land Rover engineering codes HPLA-7000-KC, HPLA-7000-KD, or OEM part number LR086510 on the driver's side of the transmission case.

What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:

7.0 - 10.0shop labor1050 - 1800typical shop bill, on top of the partAdvanced / ExpertDIY difficulty

Special tools this job needs:

  • Transmission jack
  • Engine support bar
  • JLR-compatible diagnostic scan tool (Pathfinder, SDD, GAP IIDTool, or Autel)
  • E-Torx sockets
  • Fluid transfer pump
🔌 Wiring harness: External wiring harness is not included; must transfer original harness. Internal Mechatronics unit is VIN-locked and tied to the vehicle's immobilizer system.

Budget for these consumables at install:

  • Genuine ZF Lifeguard 8 fluid (or Land Rover specification LR023288 / LR023289)
  • New plastic transmission oil pan with integrated filter and gasket
  • New one-time-use mounting bolts
  • Torque converter seal (front pump input shaft seal)
  • High-pressure cooler-line flush solvent

What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:

⚠️ Requiredprogramming / calibration⚠️ Yesdealer tool needed⚠️ YesECU/PCM re-marriage

What’s involved: Security/Immobilizer Re-marriage, VIN-Specific Programming, and TCM Adaptive Relearn

The TCM is part of the vehicle's anti-theft immobilizer system. A used transmission will have the donor vehicle's VIN and security keys locked. If installed without programming, the vehicle will not start or will lock in Park. Options: 1) Swap your original undamaged Mechatronic unit into the replacement transmission (no programming required). 2) Have a specialist bench-clone the TCM. 3) Program the replacement TCM using factory JLR software.

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

  • Torque Converter Seating: Ensure the torque converter is fully seated (three distinct clicks/drops) before bolting to the engine. Forcing it will crush the oil pump gear and destroy the transmission instantly.
  • Fluid Fill Procedure & Temperature: Fluid level must be checked with the engine running, vehicle level, and fluid temperature strictly between 30°C and 50°C (86°F to 122°F). Checking outside this range results in incorrect levels.
  • Cooler Bypass Valve: Ensure the transmission is warm enough to open the thermal bypass valve during filling/flushing to prevent air pockets and underfilling.
  • Emergency Park Release (EPR): Ensure the EPR lever on the side of the case is properly adjusted and in the correct position after installation.
  • Mechatronics Sealing Sleeve: If swapping your original Mechatronics unit, replace the rubber sealing sleeves between the valve body and case to prevent internal pressure leaks.

Easy to get right once you know them:

  • Ordering for the wrong engine: Buying a 5.0L V8 transmission for a 3.0L V6 or 3.0L Diesel vehicle (bellhousing, torque converter, and calibrations differ).
  • Reusing a contaminated cooler: Failing to flush or replace the cooler after a failure, which immediately contaminates and ruins the replacement unit.
  • Expecting plug-and-play operation without programming: Attempting to run the vehicle without swapping the Mechatronics unit, cloning, or programming the TCM.
  • Using incorrect fluid: Using generic multi-vehicle ATF instead of genuine ZF Lifeguard 8.
  • Reusing the old plastic transmission pan: Reusing a warped pan or failing to replace the integrated filter.
  • Filling fluid with the engine off: Filling with the engine off leaves the unit drastically underfilled, burning up clutches on the first test drive.

Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every transmission of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:

severeCoolant Contamination & Torque Converter Shudder2017-2018

🔎 Recommended at install: Replace transmission oil cooler, flush lines, and replace transmission if internal clutch friction material is destroyed.

moderateGearbox Fault & Flashing D Indicator2017-2018

🔎 Recommended at install: Update the Transmission Control Module (TCM) software.

moderateTransmission Case Porosity Oil Leak2017-2018

🔎 Recommended at install: Inspect rear extension housing near the steel D clutch tube; do not misdiagnose as a leaking rear output shaft seal or oil pan gasket.

severeA Clutch Pressure Plate Failure2017-2018

🔎 Recommended at install: Replace damaged internal clutch components; thin stamped steel plate is prone to flexing or cracking under heavy load.

moderateTransmission Case/Cover Gasket Oil Leaks2017-2018

🔎 Recommended at install: Replace warped factory plastic transmission pan and gasket.

moderateMechatronics / TCM Failure2017-2018

🔎 Recommended at install: Address solenoid failures or corrupted flash memory; may require programming or replacement.

Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 400-10151-5597604). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.

Policies, in plain English.

Shipping & Handling

  • Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
  • Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
  • The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
  • Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance

120-Day Warranty

This part includes a 120-day warranty.

  • If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
  • Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
  • Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation

Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.

Returns (30 Days)

We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.

  • Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
  • Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
  • Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
  • Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
  • Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited

Damaged in Shipping?

Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:

  • Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
  • Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
  • Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
  • Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery

We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.

Order Cancellation

Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
