Know This Transmission Before You Buy
The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this transmission family:
A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right transmission shows up:
- Confirm the 8th digit of the VIN (typically 'K' or 'R' for the 2.4L non-hybrid engine).
- Verify the Service Parts Identification label in the glove box or trunk contains RPO code MH8.
- Confirm the vehicle is Front-Wheel Drive (FWD) and not All-Wheel Drive (AWD).
- Verify the original transmission has the 4-letter broadcast code 4ARW or 5ARW, or matches GM part numbers 24269882 or 24269883.
What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:
Special tools this job needs:
- Engine support bar / fixture
- Transmission jack
- GM-compatible scan tool (GDS2 / MDI) with J2534 pass-thru
- Torque wrench
- Axle seal installer (J-46629-A)
- Cooler line flush tool (DT-45096)
Budget for these consumables at install:
- DEXRON-VI synthetic automatic transmission fluid (approx. 4.2 to 6.3 quarts for service fill; 7.4 to 9.5 quarts for dry fill)
- Side cover gasket (control valve body cover gasket) if opened
- Front pump / torque converter seal
- Both CV axle shaft seals
- Transmission cooler line flush (aerosol kit or dedicated flushing machine)
What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:
What’s involved: VIN-specific programming (SPS2 flashing) and TCM adaptive relearn (Fast Learn)
The integrated TEHCM is locked to the donor vehicle's VIN. It must be programmed using a GM dealer-level scan tool (GDS2/MDI) or J2534 pass-thru tool, followed by a 'Transmission Service Fast Learn' adaptive calibration. The vehicle will not start or will remain in limp mode if this is not completed.
Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:
- Torque Converter Seating: Must make two distinct drops and sit about 1 inch back from the bellhousing face. Forcing the bellhousing bolts with an unseated converter will instantly crack the front pump gear.
- Dowel Pin Alignment: Ensure alignment dowel pins on the engine block are present and undamaged to prevent misalignment and rapid wear of the pump bushing or seals.
- TEHCM Programming Before Driving: Do not drive before programming; mismatched adaptive values can immediately burn up the clutch packs.
- Fluid Level Check Procedure: No dipstick. Must check via the check plug on the side of the case with the vehicle level, engine running, and fluid warmed to 85°C–95°C (185°F–203°F). Checking with the engine off causes a massive underfill.
- Axle Bushing Check: Check the driver's side case bushing for play before installing the CV axle; replace with an upgraded bushing if loose to prevent immediate seal leaks.
- Cooler Line Flush: Mandatory back-flush and forward-flush to clear metal debris from the previous failure, which will otherwise destroy the new TEHCM.
Easy to get right once you know them:
- Trying to drive the vehicle before programming the TEHCM, causing a no-start or immediate clutch damage.
- Forgetting or skipping the transmission cooler line flush, leading to contamination and premature failure of the replacement unit.
- Using the bellhousing bolts to pull the transmission tight to the engine block when the torque converter is not fully seated, cracking the front pump.
- Checking the fluid level with the engine turned off, resulting in a severe underfill of 2-3 quarts.
- Using universal or incorrect automatic transmission fluid instead of mandatory DEXRON-VI.
Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every transmission of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:
🔎 Recommended at install: Transmission shift cable adjuster may disengage from the shift lever; requires inspection/repair of the cable adjuster.
🔎 Recommended at install: Improperly manufactured snap ring sticks to housing and pops out, causing limp mode (2nd and Reverse only); requires replacement of the snap ring.
🔎 Recommended at install: Launch shudder or harsh shifts caused by debris/scoring in valve bodies; requires cleaning or replacement of upper/lower valve bodies.
🔎 Recommended at install: Worn case bushing causes axle to wobble and tear the seal; replace seal and install upgraded Teflon-coated bushing (e.g., Superior K099 kit).
🔎 Recommended at install: Reprogram the Transmission Control Module (TCM) with a revised calibration.
🔎 Recommended at install: Perform a specific 'fast learn' or adaptive relearn procedure to allow the transmission to adapt.
🔎 Recommended at install: Causes shudder, slipping, and overheating; requires replacement of the torque converter and a complete system flush to remove debris.
🔎 Recommended at install: TEHCM fails due to heat/age, setting DTCs (e.g., P2714); requires replacement and programming of the TEHCM.

Policies, in plain English.
Shipping & Handling
- Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
- Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
- The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
- Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance
120-Day Warranty
This part includes a 120-day warranty.
- If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
- Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
- Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation
Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.
Returns (30 Days)
We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.
- Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
- Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
- Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
- Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
- Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited
Damaged in Shipping?
Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:
- Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
- Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
- Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
- Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery
We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.
Order Cancellation
Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
