Know This Engine Before You Buy

The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this engine family:

A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right engine shows up:

  • Confirm that the 5th digit of your vehicle's VIN is U.
  • Determine if your vehicle is 4WD or 2WD to prepare for potential oil pan transfer.
🔎 Where to look: Locate the engine code '1GR' stamped on the front driver-side of your engine block near the oil filter bracket and timing cover.

What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:

8 to 15shop labor$1,500 to $2,500typical shop bill, on top of the partAdvanced to ExpertDIY difficulty

Special tools this job needs:

  • Crankshaft pulley holding tool (Toyota SST 09213-54015 or equivalent)
  • Engine hoist and load leveler
  • High-quality torque wrench
  • Toyota Form-In-Place Gasket (FIPG) sealant (Part #00295-00103)
  • Harmonic balancer puller
  • Fuel line disconnect tool set
🔌 Wiring harness: The engine wiring harness must match your vehicle's exact year and emissions spec. It is highly recommended to transfer your original engine wiring harness to the replacement engine to avoid pinout mismatches.

Budget for these consumables at install:

  • 6.2 to 6.4 quarts of SAE 0W-20 synthetic oil
  • New Toyota OEM oil filter (Part #04152-38010 or 04152-YZZA5)
  • Toyota Super Long Life Coolant (SLLC - Pink), pre-mixed 50/50 (approx. 10.5 quarts)
  • 6 new Denso or NGK iridium spark plugs (pre-gapped to 0.039–0.043 inches)
  • Intake manifold gaskets (upper and lower)
  • Exhaust manifold gaskets
  • Valve cover gaskets
  • Thermostat and water pump gaskets
  • Toyota FIPG (Form-In-Place Gasket) sealant (Part #00295-00103)
  • Water pump (recommended)
  • Thermostat (recommended)

What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:

✅ Not requiredprogramming / calibration✅ Nodealer tool needed✅ NoECU/PCM re-marriage

What’s involved: none

The engine will start and run on the original ECU without programming. However, if your vehicle was experiencing spark knock, a dealer may need to perform the ECM calibration update (TSB T-SB-0110-14) using a Techstream scan tool.

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

  • The Timing Cover O-Ring Slip: When installing the timing cover, there is a small oil pump O-ring located at the front of the upper oil pan. If you slide the timing cover down without completely removing the upper oil pan, you risk dragging and pinching this O-ring, resulting in zero oil pressure upon first start.
  • 2WD vs. 4WD Oil Pan Transfer: If your vehicle is 4WD and the donor engine came from a 2WD vehicle (or vice versa), you must transfer your original upper aluminum oil pan, lower steel oil pan, and the oil pickup tube (strainer).
  • Harmonic Balancer Torque: The crankshaft pulley bolt requires a massive 184 ft-lbs of torque. Do NOT use an impact gun to tighten this bolt without a holding tool.
  • Secondary Air Injection System: The 2012+ 1GR-FE uses a secondary air injection pump and switching valves located near the passenger-side firewall. These are highly fragile and prone to breaking during engine removal/installation.
  • Check Knock Sensor Harness: Inspect the small sub-harness for the knock sensors located in the 'V' of the engine, under the intake manifold, for rodent damage.
  • Clean VVT Filters: Inspect and clean the small mesh oil control valve (OCV) filters to ensure proper VVT function.

Easy to get right once you know them:

  • Ordering for a 4th Gen 4Runner (2003–2009) or 2nd Gen Tacoma (2005–2015) assuming all 1GR-FE engines are the same.
  • Reusing Stretched Cylinder Head Bolts if replacing head gaskets.
  • Failing to Clean the Oil Pickup Screen and flush oil cooler lines if the original engine failed due to sludge or bearing failure.
  • Not Letting the FIPG Sealant Cure for a full 24 hours before adding oil or starting the engine.
  • Not Swapping the Wiring Harness and attempting to use the donor engine's harness.

Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every engine of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:

severeFuel Pump Failure (Recall)2018–2019 4Runners and Tundras / 2014-2015 4Runners

🔎 Recommended at install: Complete replacement of the fuel pump module, performed by a dealer.

moderateSecondary Air Injection System - Moisture Intrusion1GR-FE engines

🔎 Recommended at install: Moisture can enter the air injection pump, causing DTCs P2440, P2442, or P2445. Repair/replace switching valves or pump.

moderateSpark Knock/Detonation2012–2014 vehicles with the 1GR-FE

🔎 Recommended at install: Resolved by an ECM calibration update.

moderateTiming Cover Oil Leak1GR-FE engines

🔎 Recommended at install: Reseal timing cover using Form-In-Place Gasket (FIPG) sealant.

severeHead Gasket FailureGen 2 Dual VVT-i (rare but possible if severely overheated)

🔎 Recommended at install: Replace head gaskets and use new torque-to-yield head bolts.

minorTicking NoisesAll years

🔎 Recommended at install: Often normal fuel injector noise or a loose bolt on a pulse width module located on the driver's side intake piping.

Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 300-65004-5514373). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.

Policies, in plain English.

Shipping & Handling

  • Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
  • Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
  • The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
  • Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance

120-Day Warranty

This part includes a 120-day warranty.

  • If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
  • Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
  • Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation

Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.

Returns (30 Days)

We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.

  • Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
  • Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
  • Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
  • Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
  • Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited

Damaged in Shipping?

Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:

  • Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
  • Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
  • Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
  • Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery

We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.

Order Cancellation

Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
